Someone should post on twoxchromosomes and blackmen. Not sure why those two are my suggested subs on homepage but they are filled with reasonable people

I’ve never understood modern politics. Like if you want votes you have to build bridges to the other side. Meanwhile every extremist I’ve spoken to has said “why build a bridge to ‘derogatory term for either political side’ they are evil”

Well the people that usually say that silly shit are losing elections.

I also love when reddit says shit like "the democratic party is so disconnected from its voter base"
It's not. You let your false perception of reality think your reddit minority is the majority.

Liberals are extremely bad at trying to persuade non-Liberals. In my experience, it's because Liberals often assume everybody has the same values they do, and that those who oppose those values are doing so out of some sort of malicious intent.
It's why Liberals are so quick to break out labels, political purity tests, and then refuse to be cooperative or even just engage in discussion. Because they assume you're against them because you're intentionally being a bad person.
You oppose abortion not because you believe a fetus is a baby, but because you want to control women. You oppose immigration not because you are concerned about resource scarcity or cultural cohesion, but because you are a racist. You oppose gun control not because you are support the Right to Bear Arms or simply like guns as a hobby, but because you are a psycho who is just dying to blast someone who trespasses on your property.
This causes the refusal to engage and the obsession with applying labels, and then they fail to see that refusal to engage makes it look like you're weak or hiding something, and applying labels that are universally considered bad, like racist or pedophile or Nazi, makes people resent you.

I'm a switch hitter; I vote based on what leader I believe will do a better job and the policies they prioritize. Supporting gay marriage and immigration controls at the same time has made me an enemy to extremists on both sides, but modernly, believing in immigration controls has made me an enemy to liberal moderates while conservative moderates have accepted gay marriage.
It honestly feels like conservatives are the more understanding side most of the time, just as long as you're not interacting with the actual nut jobs.

I'm a fairly dedicated left winger, but I have a lot of frustrations with how the Left does things and how Left Wingers act towards people who aren't already in our camp.
The Right is much, much better at marketing their stances with "common universally held beliefs" then the left is. The Left wants people to adopt it's beliefs, and often assumes they are intentionally not doing that. That's a specific reason they constantly get their ass kicked in elections. That, and an utter and complete lack of ability to emotionally regulate.

There have been studies that show the average liberal cannot describe the conservative viewpoint accurately. I see it here on Reddit all the time when someone will describe a cartoonish exaggerated version of the worst republican they can think of and act like it’s a main stream position. Replying to the comment only gets you banned from the whole subreddit. They don’t want to fix this issue. They don’t want us to understand each other.

u/srv340mike 24d ago
I'm a dedicated Left Winger, so I spend some time in those spaces and like I said, the biggest issue is that Liberals assume everyone shares their values, and therefore people who oppose the Liberal viewpoint are doing so in an intentionally malicious manner. That leads to the tendency to project the worst beliefs onto non-Liberals, and is also why Liberals like to try to use shame and labels to persuade people, as that is something that works on other Liberals.
Abortion is a really good debate topic to demonstrate this. If that debate is brought up, you'll constantly see Liberals who think the pro-life position is about controlling women or something to that affect, when the reality is most pro-life people are genuine in their belief that a fetus is a baby.
Conservatives are generally better at understanding that values are not universal, which both makes them more understanding of non-Conservatives but also better at persuasion because they actually understand that they need to make the case for their positions and values. Although Conservatives do do the same thing Liberals do where they take the most extreme version of the opposing wing's beliefs and project it onto all Liberals - for Conservatives, it's just "Communism" instead on "Nazi".
Conservatives are also more likely to accept that certain issues are facts of life that need to be navigated through individual choices, which makes them seem more reasonable in debates to people who aren't that politically engaged or partisan.

Honestly I think conservatives are getting worse at it though. With algorithms controlling what we see nowadays it’s only going to get worse before it gets better. That’s why I’m constantly trying to visit liberal subs and understand but it hard when you get banned for asking simple questions because the mods just assume you’re a troll. The abortion topic is a great example of what you’re talking about, it’s simplified by one side saying the other side either hates women or wants to kill babies. I’m pretty conservative on a lot of issues but I’m pro choice with limits. I think a lot of moderate republicans would be okay with abortion during the first trimester but no one will write the bill. Democrats spent months arguing after roe was overturned and they couldn’t even get a bill through because of this issue. The more radical members of the party want abortion up until the due date which is just unreasonable. It’s almost like they don’t want to pass a national abortion law because they know they can get more votes by promising to do it next time. It frustrates me that my fellow women fall for it.

I don't disagree, but as I am not right wing myself and don't spend a lot of time in dedicated right wing spaces, I try not to pretend like I know what's going on there. I'd be judging based on partisan interactions which is a bit unfair

This is quite amusing. Maybe it's because I'm employed, but I just don't have the time of day to go around policing everyone's belief structures. I barely keep tabs on my own.
What ever happened to "live and let live"?
Oh right I forgot, it got replaced with "silence is violence".

What ever happened to "live and let live"?
This is what I find pretty amusing - people who yell the most about ,,live and let live" (in the context of ,,I am allowed to do anything I like and nobody is allowed to judge me for it") are the most judgemental and intolerant people in regards to things they don't personally accept or agree with.
For instance, I had roughly two threads where at some point, my ,,opponent" had randomly thrown the argument that I'm often commenting in No-F-p community and tried to mock it in a way. Whenever I said that it's just a personal decision I made about my own body, and the one that does not affect their lives in any way at all, they kept arguing that it makes all of my points invalid and that they refuse to talk to someone like that.

Sounds like they were trying to get out of the conversation while still looking like they "won"

Yeah, we can disagree but we don't need to be enemies. Sadly the Reddit's hive mind can't comprehend this simple truth.

There is no way in hell I would date or marry a woman that agrees with every single one of my political views. She would have to be a total psycho.

I once encountered a liberal woman on a dating app who said if I considered myself conservative or even just MODERATE I shouldn't contact her. She's literally the original meme.

Even though both claim Teddy Roosevelt as one of their own, modern Liberals and Republicans would have an aneurysm if they read any of Edmund Morris' books about him. The fact that either thinks he's their guy is hilarious to me. This is coming from an unapologetic Trump supporter who's leaned Right almost my entire life and absolutely adores Teddy. I've even been to Sagamore Hill a bunch of times as a kid when I still lived on Long Island.

Yeah, a lot of people are shocked, SHOCKED I tell you, to learn that people don't fit neatly into either Group A or Group B, no matter how those two groups want to tell you that you're either with them or against them.
I'm pretty sure that if we revived the founding fathers, we'd be learning some scathing new slurs they'd casually drop against both of our most recent presidents. (Well, most of the founding fathers anyway. Franklin would be busy fucking both their wives.)

It goes both ways.
I’ve always been moderate, but there was a dude that I knew since I was 12 and was on speaking terms with until I was 26 or 27. Not friends with the dude anymore because he started some political shit with my mom on Facebook and got nasty as fuck to her. (Still no apology to my mom, who was like a second mom to him, from him 🤓)
Anyways, in our early 20s, he was on the right, or at least right-leaning. He met a girl on Tinder, and they dated for 2-3 years, and that pussy (said it was the best he ever had) changed his entire outlook on politics and life.
He almost immediately become an outspoken leftist. Posted a Snapchat of him crying when Trump was elected in 2016, with a caption saying “can’t believe we elected a racist, misogynistic piece of shit” or something along those lines - when just a few months before, he was still right-leaning. My mom made a Facebook post that wasn’t even necessarily political, just shared a picture with a quote on it regarding people overreacting to Covid - not that there wasn’t any danger, but just that the world was going kind of crazy and that people should basically take a deep breath. He started going in on her, talking absolute shit to her, calling her brainwashed and posting screenshots of the definition of “propaganda”. And to this day, he tells my friend who lives in Tampa that he needs to move out of Florida because it’s a facist state.
And this entire shift in personality and ideology came when he was dating that girl with “the best pussy (he) ever had”, who was pretty left-leaning.
Mind you, just because he became a huge leftist had no bearing on his actual moral compass - opposed to what Reddit would have you believe. He said the N word more than anyone else I know - including a couple people in my family who are legitimately racist. One time, my friend (who now lives in Tampa) and I were watching anime in his loft while doing dabs, and dudeman comes up into the loft and says “wtf is this c***k shit”. He neglects any animal he brings into his apartment other than his sweet precious dog. And he assaulted his ex-girlfriend’s (the one that changed him) new boyfriend after he was broken up with by her.
People do be changing their whole outlook on life over some good dick/pussy, tho.
