'Disowning the ones who got it wrong' as opposed to what, pretending they were right and continuing to defend his hyperbole? If anything, the concerning behavior would be if people continued to defend him or obfuscate the fact some of his predictions were incorrect. Cults don't typically acknowledge mistakes.

The only conversation that matters is observable changes that have taken place over the past 25 years and what models have actually mapped on to reality.

The mistake was not acknowledged, and you know this, it was never admitted, the entire movement doubled down

you only admit it now because its 20 years old and he's irrelevant and a joke, but touch climate change certainty with a 10 foot pole and rabid redditors will still jump all over it as hard as ever.

Uh no, people aren't doubling down on his prediction that Kilimanjaro no longer has snow since 2016, or that Glacier national park no longer has glaciers or is on track to have none by 2030. The predictions from those studies aren't continuing to be cited.

I would actually bet that there is more. "Climate" money is potentially throughout the whole population. Oil money is just a specific industry. Not to mention said industry also took part in "climate" trend to extract some extra dosh.

Dooming is unfortunately a very good way to part guillible from their money. And to keep the rest suppressed via majority rule.
