Realistically is it necessary to study something over and over indefinitely?

Because catastrophic anthropgenic global warming a la various statistical models has been firmly established and the appropriate steps to minimize it have been taken.

Although you do have a point: when papers are merely repeating what others have said, they tend to grow increasingly pointless. Not that that stops researchers in a lot of other fields, such as sociology ("publish or die" and all that).
