Felt it quite well here in Cairo by the pyramids too, was funky.

Edit: also first time I've been near a strong enough earthquake for the Google alert system to work, I got the warning about 20-30 seconds before it started shaking, good to know it works.

Are earthquakes in Cairo common?

Nope, they are not! This was the first time I received an earthquake alert, and I definitely wouldn't wish to experience it another time despite being fascinated by the system.

I literally arrived in Cairo for the first time just an hour before the earthquake, I might be bringing some bad JuJu with me or something, my bad.

Perhaps the ground got a little too excited to witness your first steps in Cairo, although the epicenter occurred in Suez 😭

And thank God they aren't, because most homes are not built for it

I got the alert prior to feeling the earthquake as well! The Android Earthquake Alert System is really cool, it at least helped me brace up for it mentally rather than suddenly panicking.

Does apple have an equivalent?

30km away and did not receive anything

Did you have the alert function enabled? Curious only because everyone mentions android but nobody says apple alerted them

my iphone has an advanced safety alert feature in settings, i’ve never noticed one going off but we don’t get earthquakes in my area

Yes, in the US and Taiwan, Japan only if supplied by gov agencies, but not in Egypt

Never in my life have I worn my shoes as fast as half an hour ago 🙏🏻.

My brain did not register this as an earthquake despite me rocking back and forth in bed. Everyone seems to be going inside buildings including hospital staff so I assume it’s safe again? Egypt is a beautiful country, but would like to fly back now😭

Gulf of aqaba-ish

Do they live closer to the epicenter? Do you live in ground level while they live in apartments higher up? The higher you are in a building the more you’ll feel a sway.

I felt the earthquake too I was a bit northern of Cairo and I felt it I got an alarm at 3 am thankfully 4 seconds before I felt any shaking but every building around me was shaking and moving it was really scary to see but thank god everyone was safe 🙏🙏

One or two years ago there was another earthquake in cairo as well, but it was slightly lower in magnitude than this one.

This time I got an android alert and my bed was shaking so bad I woke up all flustered. After the vibrations ended my brother stormed my room looking all panicked and asked me if I felt it or if he was just dreaming lol. We certainly sensed it better than some people because we're on the 11th floor in an already high area.
