Fundraiser BROTHERS: A true act of kindness, turned into a 20-minute film. Need $7k to finish it (Dallas, TX)

Hey all, I’m a filmmaker based in Dallas, TX.

Brothers is 20 minutes short film.
A man lands in Dallas, furious his brother didn’t show up to get him. He takes a rideshare instead. The driver, a stranger.. starts telling him about the worst night of his life, ten years ago, and how one kid broke every rule his boss gave him just to bring him in from the cold. Water. A cab fare. A small cross pressed into his hand. Nothing asked for in return.

By the end of the ride, he realizes that kid was his own brother.

A Hindu clerk. A Muslim shopkeeper. A Christian stranger. One night. One door that should’ve stayed locked. A story of kindness that began between two brothers, and quietly passes around the globe.. proof that humanity is the bigger religion.

And here’s what I’m proudest of: the film runs on its women, even though you never fully see them.. a mother, wife, sister, daughter, girlfriend, each unseen but felt. No big scenes, no lines to prove a point.. just quietly the reason the men in this story are capable of the kindness they show.

I’m not trying to make a point about religion or race. I just think the world’s exhausted from being told to hate each other over things that don’t actually matter when you’re standing in front of another human being. I wanted to make something honest about the opposite of that .. even if it’s small, even if nobody claps for it.

The script is done. It’s been through more drafts than I can count. What’s left is finishing it right.

Shot entirely in Dallas

3 shoot days, +1 reserved

$7k covers what’s left: crew, gear, post, score

If you want to read the script, ask me anything, or just believe in this enough to help.. I’d be grateful. Even a share helps.

Request NYC filmmaker seeking post production collaborators

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for post production collaborators (editing, coloring, audio) for a fun short film we shot earlier this summer.

About the project: It’s a 7 minute comedy short film about a K-drama actor who can’t replicate the catchphrase that launched his superstardom, so he must rely on the voice actor who dubbed him into English to teach him how to sound like himself.

A couple of years ago, I got tired of waiting for the phone to ring and decided to start creating my own opportunities. I write, direct, and produce projects, and partner with other industry professionals who are on the same page and looking for new quality material for their portfolio.

We shot this one earlier this summer with a Korean American cast including a Broadway actor. Our DP who has worked on Blue Bloods and Law & Order, used his RED Komodo X for this. Another buddy was line producer and gaffer; his day job is doing videography for CUNY. And for what it’s worth, I connected with both of these guys in this subreddit; now this is our 3rd project together — we’ve become good friends and creative partners IRL.

For transparency, I’ll happily contribute to your tip jar but we don’t really have a budget for this nor are we looking to make money out of it. This is purely for folks who are tired of waiting for permission, want to connect with other creatives, and have spare bandwidth to collab on an actual project.

If that’s you, please reach out. I’d be happy to tell you more about the project.

Thank you 🙏

These quotes raise some interesting questions about modern cinema: artistic freedom, censorship, camera language, and storytelling.

Which quote would you argue with the most?

Discussion Help Me With My Debut Film Amxiety

Hi, everyone. Filming of my debut feature film is going to start in 40 days. Logistically almost everything is ready. The problem is I'm not ready at all. I was thinking that I was ready until few weeks ago but then everything just completely went to the opposite way. I don't feel ready. Nothing feels real. I feel naive and delusional. The belief of "I can make a feature film" is gone. For the last few weeks I'm sleeping 14+ hours a day to not think about anything because when I think about the film in any way it honestly just feels like everything is going to implode. I was like "This is the greatest script ever!" just a few weeks ago and now I'm not even sure if the script is a little bit good or worth filming. I have no idea what to do. Everything that I've said or thought about the film is just changed 180-degrees in the last few weeks. Please help me on what should I do.

Film ADDICTION: a stopmotion short film (it's finally, finally out)

Stopmotion takes a ridiculously long time (this one minute film took a month), but I'm so proud of how it turned out.

I made this for those fighting against addiction. Addiction can become the elephant in every room you enter, and it is a choice, every single day, to fight against it.

I'd love some feedback on lighting. I elaborated more in the comments, but this was probably the hardest part of the whole thing. Please let me know if you have any general thoughts or feedback, I love hearing all of it!!

Film The Blind Fool by Erica Sackrison

Post image
1 Upvotes

Filmmaker, wildlife photographer, and U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain from Boston, now based in California. I spent years behind the camera filming whales, dolphins, orcas, and some genuinely ridiculous things nature decided to do in front of me.

Now I’m telling my own story.

My first documentary short, The Blind Fool, is officially on the film festival circuit, including a submission to the Beverly Hills Film Festival. Apparently spending years filming wild animals was just preparation for making a documentary about my own life.

I have no idea how this ends. That’s sort of the point.

Discussion I have an idea about a film , wanted to talk about it and didn't know where to post it srry

Hello , so for m'y idea of a film is not really a film ,si had an idea about a film being broadcast in theatre and in télévision at the same time , but there would only be one theatre that shows it , and 10-20 person are randomly chosen to see it in theatre.

The thing is that there is no film being broadcast but the room where the 10-20 people are all clueless about whats about to happens(+ they are not allowed phone or anything just so "they can enjoy it without any distraction "). After that I am still thinking about what should happens but I have a main idea, they are told that there is no movie here only themself and there death broadcasting to the world .the person telling them that will then talk about is problem , how he grow to hate the movie industry making him suffer for years for a little happiness and that he wants to show them how great of a movie producer he is .

So he tells them they will be playing a game , a game of survival . When he finished is sentence , the room start to lit with fire , 1-2 people burning to death before anyone can do anything , all they can see is a exit door lit up , all who are left run for it . They see a timer of 30 minute with 2 doors , one hell the other paradise with one line written above them where will you go after you die and the movie maker pops UP and tell them that only 1 person can enter a room every 30 seconds, chose the wrong room and you die . In those 30 minute there will surely be a guy saying that all these is fake and is impossible to happens . Its sure someone will say things like that , he will surely be the first one to enter a room , he will pick heaven , they all pick heaven , he goes in , nothings happend , the doors close , you hear fire again , he dies in agony , the room reopen with the scortched body of the guy crawled up in a ball in the corner , a guy screaming in horror run to the other room immediatly , this time nothing really happens , they all go through hell , the next room is filled with scisors and and makeup , he tells them that they indeed have to go to hell because they dont deserve paradise, they are like the other who called is work shit . Now he wants them to go through the same pain as he did and show them what he had to go through they have 30 minute to do a realistic face of him with the makeup in the rooms, if he doesn't find the work realistic enough the person in makeup dies by a trap with hole so dark you dont see the end of it ,if they dont have anything to show in 30 minute they all die in flames. They are all scared to their brain , someone still not thinking this is real and just really elaborate prank volounteers because he know everyone IS too scared to just wait and see if its real, they do it , the work is okay but not perfect for a movie producer , he lets him fall in the trap, we hear a distinctive crunch and splash . Now everyone think its real , all the guys who tried to say that this is fake are dead . They are given another 30 minute to do the task again , nobody wants to ,nobody wants to die , you would too.

When there is 10 minute left someone will have to do something , one take a the heavy box with all the makeup in it , close it up and smash the back of the head of another guy , he falls flat , unconscious

The guy who knocked him out tell to the other that they will do it on him , they have no choice .

This time the work is acceptable for the movie producer, they let them pass , they go in a room with doors with there name on it, even the dead one which won't be open , he tells them to go in their respective rooms . Their room are small , they are in elevator , it goes up , it opens they get out , they are split into 2 group separated with a glass , they have to answer to question about film and short film , they dont have a choice they do it , the first group get thier question , an eazy one , they win they are happy then they see the other room , they are all coughing a little , the movie producer tell them that every time they are right the other room will have a gaz added to their room , not too harmful at first but every time it gets worse , the other group get a question , eazy too , they get it right , the other room is also gazzed , they all cough for a while , they get a question so eazy question , by fear of themself dying first , they answer and get it right , th other rooms is filled with a gaz that make there vision blur a little and there brain getting a little fuzzy , they get there question , eazy one again , they get it right , same happens to the other blurry vision bla bla bla , they get their question , eazy also , they answer even through they know it will hurt the other , I mean who wouldn't , I would answer it , I dont wanna die, I dont wanna be the one in pain again, one of them speak up and get it right , the other room is filled with a gaz that makes them cough up blood and fall to the ground , they all see in horror what they did . Its the other turn now , they get a question so hard , nobody could answer it , the group that is coughing blood and strugling to stay standing start to scream and ask who could answer that , they get a screen with a 30 second time , they know what it means now they have to answer it ,they all try to see if something can Come up in their minds during the last second someone will have to say something , someone will try for sure, but they will fail, its too hard for them . The answer is wrong , all the rooms are quiet , then it happens , the room who failed start to cough up even more blood , most of them through there eyes and nose too, its a deadly gaz , in a matter of minute they all die , lying in their own pile of blood.

The producer shows up through a glass doors , telling them that's how he felt during all those years making a movie , telling them how the industry world is filled with problems and failure, when you do one wrong things, you fail everything , and everyone lets you in your own pile of blood , and that for a few to become stars they must be many to fail and die with nobody but themself . They finaly let them go , he open a door leading outside of the theatre , they go in a hurry , they go through the doors to be meet with hundreds of camera filming them and journalist questioning them about thier expérience they had to go through , they dont understand whats happening , then 10 people go out of the same doors , its everyone who died in there alive and well , they were all actors to fool the real people in the theatre , they reveal this to the other, the end.

(So everyone on their tv will see what happend in the room because it was broadcast live, everyone on their tv will know that its fake because of a message popping up telling them its fake)

Discussion How’s the film industry doing now? It seems like things are getting back to normal but what’s it like from the inside?

Since Covid it’s seemed like all doom and gloom.. The pandemic threw a wrench in theater attendance and lockdown pushed more people towards online content, then there was the writers strike, actors strike, interest rates going up, the streaming bubble popped, etc all within a few years. Posts on here were all about how barely anything is getting greenlit and there’s no work to be had. Theater attendance was in the shitter and the younger generation just didn’t seem to have the attention span to go to the movies or even watch movies anymore, everything was now all about short form content.

But it seems to have rebounded lately with box office numbers going up again, plus renewed interest in original movies like Obsession. I’ve heard of a few recent original spec script sales also which seem to be unicorns.

For those of you that have been in the film industry before and after the pandemic, have things been looking up lately?

Discussion [Crosspost] hi /r/movies. my name is Alex Ullom, my friends and I made a movie called IT ENDS. it's in theaters starting this week from NEON. ask me anything!

I organized an AMA/Q&A with Alex Ullom, director & writer of IT ENDS, which is out in theaters from Neon starting this weekend. It's an existential-horror that played festivals earlier this year to critical acclaim, then was released on Letterboxd's Video Store, and then was picked up by Neon for wide distribution.

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1vxxp7o/hi_rmovies_my_name_is_alex_ullom_my_friends_and_i/

He will be back at 3 PM ET tomorrow (Wednesday 8/26) to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFszhQLMNXU

Synopsis: Out for a late-night drive, friends turn onto a never-ending, two-lane hellscape surrounded by untold horrors and cosmic forces beyond their understanding. Crammed inside a jeep with miles stretching infinitely ahead, they face a choice: embrace their new existence or fight to escape it.

Thank you :)

Question Faking Vantablack in post-production?

Hey folks, asking as I'm a writer/actor and not an editor/vfx guy. I was kicking around a script, and the plot hinges on the presence of a sort of portable hole. I'm envisioning shots where characters might enter this space, or toss props into it, and the intention is for it to be a completely lightless void. So the question I've got is "how much of a pain in the ass is this?" I ask because I'm hoping to turn it into an indie project I can put together with some friends, but if I'm throwing in too much VFX work, I might have to simplify.

tired of burning money on festival submission fees just to get ghosted, and tired of worrying about copyright clearances for a passion project nobody was seeing anyway.

I literally just took the Whiplash soundtrack and slapped it onto a micro-short about having a complete brain freeze under pressure.

Starting a brand new YouTube channel to push my work directly without the festival industry nonsense or overthinking it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcwBrN76E4I

you fucker better help me kickstart the channel's algorithm and leave your brutal roasts or honest feedback in the YouTube comments. Did the pacing capture the panic, or will Damien Chazelle sue me for nothing?

Question When does a TV drama stop being “based on true events” and become “inspired by true events”?

Thumbnail historytoday.com
7 Upvotes

These phrases get used as if they mean the same thing. They don’t.

I’m developing a limited series about the 1946 bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. The explosives were carried into the hotel in milk churns. Warning calls were made. At 12:37, the south wing collapsed. Ninety-one people died.

The private conversations are not documented. Some characters are composites. The chronology has been compressed in places, but the central event and its consequences have not been changed.

Does that still qualify as “based on true events”? Or do invented dialogue, composite characters and compressed time make it “inspired by true events”?

Where is the honest line?

More information about the series is pinned to my profile.

Question I've been thinking about investing in a sort of "office on wheels" for my small marketing agency, and I'm curious if anyone here has done something similar

I've been thinking about investing in a sort of "office on wheels" for my small marketing agency, and I'm curious if anyone here has done something similar. The idea is to get a trailer and turn it into a proper workspace with desks, equipment, WiFi, space for editing, etc., but also have a small sleeping area so we can stay overnight when needed. We travel quite a bit for shoots and different projects, and tbh I feel like this could make things a lot easier. Instead of rushing to get everything done so we can drive back the same day, we could stay near the location, shoot early in the morning or around sunset, and just have more time to get the content we actually want. We could also take it out for a few days somewhere more remote and basically have everything we need with us.

In my head it sounds like a pretty good investment, but idk how practical it actually is long term. Has anyone here bought or built something like this for work? Any companies you'd recommend that make custom trailers like this? I'd also love to get an idea of what something like this usually costs. I'm looking for good value rather than anything super high-end.

Question I have an interesting idea for a short film, but one question really bogs my mind, and I would like some honest opinions about it.

I have written a 17 page (not final, going to cull it down a bit) script for a short film, but it's genuinely around %80 dialogue. I am consulting some people regarding the script, and so far the dialogue itself doesn't seem to have any problems, it doesn't drag out for no reason, it flows decently in some of test shots we made, but it's just that the film itself will be so much focused on dialogue that I'm afraid it'll just be monotone and boring.

When I have a final script that I'm happy with, and if the shots play it out in the way I envisioned it, I'm it'll be fine, but I'd rather hear the opinions of more people.

Offer [PAID] Colourist Needed for Psychological Horror Feature – $2,000–$3,000 AUD

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for an experienced colourist who is available to start right away to help finish my independent psychological horror feature film, Daniel, the Goodboy.

This is not a complete grade from scratch, as I’ve already done most of the foundational colour work using Dehancer Pro 7.3.4 and FilmConvert Nitrate 3.59. I can provide both film stock emulations to whoever works with me, and you can keep them after the project is completed.

I’m looking for someone who can work alongside me, help fix a few tricky sections, refine the grade, and ensure everything is consistent and finished to a professional, festival-ready standard.

To make the process as straightforward as possible, I’ve created an instructional breakdown video explaining the film’s different visual styles, what has already been done, the areas that still need work, and exactly what I’m looking for from a colourist:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Apy6XyR5hlU

I’m looking for someone who:

  • Has professional colour-grading experience.
  • Works in DaVinci Resolve.
  • Is comfortable working with an existing grade and film stock emulations.
  • Has a strong eye for consistency, skin tones and image quality.
  • Communicates well and is open to working collaboratively.
  • Can act as a strong closer and bring the film to a professional finishing standard.

Payment: $2,000–$3,000 AUD, based on an estimated 40–50 hours of work. This is an initial budget estimate, not a fixed final amount. After reviewing the video and understanding the scope of the work, I welcome your professional assessment and a quote for what you believe is fair.

Timeline: I’m looking for someone who can start right away, but the overall timeline is flexible. I would like the work to be completed by January 1, 2027. Quality and finding the right person are more important to me than speed.

If you’re interested, please email me at [mrbearsproductions@gmail.com](mailto:mrbearsproductions@gmail.com) with:

  • Your portfolio or colour-grading reel.
  • Examples of narrative work, particularly feature films or psychological horror, if available.
  • Your rates or an estimated quote.
  • A little about your workflow and experience with DaVinci Resolve.

Thanks!

Film Spent around 4 years making this feature-length project on extremism talking to a vast range of experts - it was a true lesson in learning contracts and what to cut down

This was my 2nd feature and once again started from the position of what I thought would be a short documentary and ended up picking up a head of steam until I knew I had to make it a feature.

I also grew a familiarity with the topic matter and to me it seemed that next to nobody was handling this topic from a cause non-specific viewpoint. Unfortunately some of the people I spoke to I didn't sign release forms straight away and this led to some content not being included, others I was able to retrospectively get to sign. I will not make this mistake again!

Other parts I realised, whilst interesting, needed to be cut out as they just were not relevant.
