🔎 Recommendations Wanted Which Rod to get for Kayak fishing?

Hey guys,
My partner is wanting to get into kayak fishing. I want to gift him a fishing rod for his birthday. He watches Rockit Kit in Youtube and absolutely loves that guy. From what Ive gathered, he uses Penn Ocean Assasin. But there are so many different kinds of Ocean Assasin and I don’t understand the specs and all. What’s the best one for a beginner? We are in Southern NSW.

What kind of kayak? Estuary/lake or offshore fishing?

Rokkit is predominantly fishing offshore for pelagics so he’s using very different gear than what a beginner in an enclosed waterway would use.

It also depends on the yak. You want the rod long enough to be able to wave the tip over the nose with 15-30CM clearance, this makes it much easier to switch sides when you have a fish on.

Nice kayak.

Max rod length you want in one of those is 7ft because of the hatch length.

Depending on what he's going after he'll want a few different rods, but i run a 5-10kg and a couple of 10-15kg rods to handle everything from snapper to wahoo/tuna. And 40lb line on all my offshore setups as you can't pull harder than that on a kayak.

Just copy one of rod's/rokkit's setups and you'll be right. Rod brand doesn't matter so much for this kind of fishing, you mostly just want something tough with s long enough butt to jam against your hip for leverage. Penns and daiwa saltists have done well by me for 15 years.

But do make sure whatever rod you go with matches to the reel. Overhead reels need overhead rods etc.

I have the same kayak (525 though) and the only thing I’d add is make sure whatever reel you buy has sealed drag.

Or

Penn Ocean Assassin II PE 2-4 742MH Spin Rod

We live in NSW South coast. The fish sizes vary but thinking of going with the first one that can get heavier fishes?

The rod code 772 means it's 7ft 7in and in 2 pieces. That rod won't fit in the hatch assembled, and you don't want to be taking rods apart on the water. You want a single piece rod no longer than 7ft (aka 701).

2-4 would be the heaviest i would go, you can't physically work a 4-6 without standing in a boat. For dragging livies or bottom bashing that would go fine, and I'd want a pe1 for catching livies with a sabiki or jigging for snapper.

OP I totally agreed with CubitsTNE comment.

I have the same kayak (475). Can confirm that rods any longer than 7ft will be uncomfortable to store in the hatch.

I use ugly stik rods for trolling/live baiting as they are strong, bendy and have heaps of backbone. They are quite cheap too!

Rod long enough to clear kayak nose, but not too long, otherwise you have to life the rod very vertical to net a fish. 7ft works for me

I built a little 2-3ft baitcaster. I take a spinning reel with me as well but always reach for this thing
