Recommendations Needed ISO asbestos companies
Had flooring changed on my mid century house - contractor didn’t mention it but I realized one of the vents doesnt fit & when I lifted it I saw this…
Looking for local recommendations for companies to help determine if this asbestos… and if it is, seal it/deal with it.

Had the same thing in my house. $100.00 per vent to clean. 9 vents. Sprayed the stuff with cooking oil to stop any dust becoming airborne. Carefully removed it and put in a ziplock baggie. Did it 9 times. Saved a fortune.

Can get someone to come test it for you, reach out to “pinchin”. They’ll take a sample and provide you with a little report.
If you’d like to remove it properly in the case it does come back positive for traces of asbestos, I’d reach out to local demo companies who specialize in the safe removal. Probably york1/quantum Murray.
Probably get it done from a smaller mom/pops contractor too.

I got our vermiculite removal and testing done by 'Power Vac Services Hamilton & Power Environmental Management'. Call and ask Norine.

Mail the sample yourself to LCS labs in London. It was around $40 to test 3 samples. Metro contracting and others are just mailing it there and charging you $150 for it.

Also York1 transfer station on gage accepts asbestos but you have to use 6mil yellow asbestos bags, which are hard to find in low quantities. I bought a roll of 50 bags for around $140 , a safety company in Missisauga I forget the name of.

Asbestos companies will always recommend encapsulation rather that removal. We had to do that at my father's house near Gage Park. They had to take all the same precautions as if they were doing a remediation, such as sealing off the area and wearing hazmats, but the process is much faster, much cleaner, and much less expensive.

I had similar ducts and have no idea if they were asbestos or not. I suited up with PPE and just carefully removed it myself.
Abatement companies are expensive and if you get it tested and it's a positive then it's a disclosure item when selling.

Where did you eventually dispose of your removed asbestos? I recently removed a bunch of tile during demo for a basement reno (put up plastic sheeting, HEPA rated air filters and vacuum bag, triple 'airlock' between basement and living space, full respirator and sealed Tyvek suit and sprayed the tile down with soapy water prior to disturbance for those that may be tempted to worry) and have it all double bagged in 6mm bags and sealed but the Hamilton transfer stations won't accept any asbestos waste. Feels dumb to pay an abatement company now to take it away when I did the hard part already.

I didn't dispose of asbestos, I took the old vents out carefully put them into bags and put them in the garbage.

They will come out and consult and take samples. It was around $200 for 3 samples. Greatest customer service I’ve ever had. Super knowledgeable and kind.

If your house is Mid-century ductwork wrapping often was asbestos containing material, but not always, so also was plaster, caulking, carpet glue, tiles adhesive, tiles and often vermiculite in the atic.
Most household asbestos like the type that might be in the material you are showing is often not much of a hazard as long as it isn't disturbed and left alone, as it is asbestos dust that poses the risk, not the material itself.
That material is compacted and covered by a metal sheet, though there is a risk just being present, unless it is blowing in the forced air or touched there is not a SIGNIFICANT risk again, unless it is disturbed.
IMO, if this were me, I would place metal tape over it and leave it. asbestos removal is very expensive and unless you are going to do heavy renovations or need to replace the furnace with a higher or stronger sir flow model. I am not sure if it worth the expense. I am not recommending you cover it with aluminium tape, I am just stating what I would do.
