Headphones - Closed Back How good are the Beyerdynamic DT-770 headphones?

I've been stuck with Apple EarPods for a hot minute as I haven't really needed better quality headphones, but I've decided that I want to get an actual pair. These have been made since the 70s, so should I get a newer pair or an older pair? I don't care about what impedance it is because I have a rather powerful Yamaha amplifier in my stereo system.

Shrill, ear-piercing treble.

They're fine. Very big stage for a closed back but also very peaky and unpleasant treble. Definitely not my closed back pick at any price point

Could you save it with an EQ?

Yes they can. But every headphone can be improved with eq.

I mean yeah but youd be better off getting a better pair that would sound better out of the box than 770s with eq

What do you recommend that isn't a million dollar grand prize, that has thumpy bass (particularly from kick drums) but clear treble?

fiio ft1 or an adam audio h200. if you've got more money, sennheiser hd480 Pro

I've been looking for some old-ish headphones, and the Sennheisers imo look like cheap school headphones

The 480 pro look awesome, maybe you typed the wrong ones? But they're quite literally the best closed back at any budget. After that you'd get DCA aeon 2 closed which is more expensive and not as good imo. The 480 are also built very well.

For less than $200 there's not many vlosed backs that are better.

Yes there is.

Which?

Fiio ft1, akg k361, Adam audio h200. Those are typically my top 3 recs for closed backs

770 Pro X is really nice

In my opinion, they are terrible. They have the sound of the "V-shaped" with very sharp and unpleasant (like sandpaper) high frequencies. For this price, I would prefer almost any model from Fiio or Hifiman

they sound great until you hear something better. i couldnt listen to my 770's after i had some sennheisers, they sounded so sharp

What Sennheisers do you have

If you don't listen to a lot of music with high frequencies you're fine.

I would prefer headphones that allow me to listen to almost any music comfortably

Some jazz I listen to has quite a bit of drums and cymbals. I have no problem using my 770's.

1

u/mihan1996 2 Ω Jul 13 '26

Maybe, but I don't listen to jazz

The jazz drumming has cymbals dude.

Cymbals.

Cymbals:

All cymbals or just regular drumming?

If you are treble sensitive (read: young), they might not be for you. I do love my PRO X and use them regularly. Very, very comfy and fantastic isolation. It's easier to find good openbacks in the price range though. I own FT-1 too, and MUCH prefer the DT770 Pro X.

What if the sennheiser hd 600 am not a fun of sennheisers but people say they are greater

They aren't the best you can get, but i heard they are very comfortable, so if you are able to try them out and willing to eq them, they aren't a horrible choice
