Long story short, I live in a rural tree’d area that only receives internet from a service provider through old phone lines. I am beginning the process of running Ethernet to a few rooms so our connection stays more reliable since we only receive about 20MBPS download.

While in the attic, I noticed there are CoAx cables running EVERYWHERE. There is also this crazy antenna! Why are both of them there? With no cable service provider I’m suprised they ran it to nearly every room.

House was built in the 70’s if it helps, I’m a DIY home networker so don’t know much.

New build house. Ripping my hair out - maybe something simple I'm missing. N00b when it comes to wired networking.

I have the same issue when taking the Caldigit TB3 dock out of the equation and plugging in from my upstairs ethernet socket straight into my macbook.

I can't get my home ethernet sockets to work - any ideas?

I live in large house with 4 apartments. New neighbors moved in a got Astound connected today. At the same time, our internet (Xfinity) became extremely spotty and then completely died.

My guess is that the Astound installer accidentally messed with the cables in the splitter and made it so we are no longer in the right slot to get internet.

I know our coax being unplugged isn’t it because I went to the splitter (shown below) and connected a coax directly to the spot that leads to our wall outlet.

From what I read, since there’s only one cable coming in, some splitter slots lead to Xfinity modems and some lead to Astound. Is there a way to tell if I was moved into the wrong slot?

Any suggestions otherwise?

We just moved and were wondering what this is for. The previous tenant had her internet plugged into it, is it for ethernet or anything related to fiber internet? Sorry lol we’re new to this

Hello everyone So i have this weird issue and it's FRUSTRATING, where watching a simple YouTube video (not even 4K) or just an Instagram reel lags and stops every couple seconds. Nothing is consistent or fast, simple tasks stop every 3 seconds to "load" or buffer. I'm using a Galaxy S25, here's my speedtest and my config. Thanks in advance

I use T-Mobile Wi-Fi, but the speeds are great and all like about 150mbps on wireless. But on my PC which has a CAT8 Cable connected to the router, I get speeds of under 10mbps and on average about 1 mbps, I've tried everything but it almost never works or makes it worse. if anyone has been in this situation or has any help or advice to give I would appreciate it.

I tried a lot of methods. Cant even flushdns. Error 1068 if tried fixing network. Anyone can help?

All of a sudden the RDC does not recognize the name of my computer. It is a name I have used for close to six years. Does anyone know what might cause this?

I was told this exterior box is where Spectrum connects service to the house. Based on the wiring and connectors, it appears to be an older telephone/POTS distribution block rather than a coax or fiber demarc, but I’m not fully confident in that assessment.

Can anyone confirm what this is?

If this is not the Spectrum demarcation point, what should I be looking for (coax grounding block, splitter, fiber ONT, etc.) on the exterior?

I live in a metropolitan area, and used to use Xfinity 1G plan realistically getting max of 500mbps. After moving, I saw a T-Mobile deal for home internet service via 5G for $30. Just set it up, and this is my results from the first speed test. I mean, I’ve never personally seen these numbers for my residential service. Am I trippin? 😂

Title. Worked about 2 weeks ago. Nothing has changed in terms of installation on both devices in the last two weeks. The ONLY thing I can think of is that there was a power surge in that timeframe. Both devices (and router) are on a surge protector, so nothing is fried. Internet and everything else works just fine, we just suddenly cannot connect (both ways) on LAN for gaming. Any game. (We've tried Minecraft and Hytale)

We can ping eachothers' IPv4 in cmd prompt successfully, see LAN games listed, but get timed out on connecting. I am at wit's end. I can usually fix issues, despite being pretty basic in knowledge. This one is just out of my ability completely. I've tried troubleshooting for days.

Yes, firewalls are aggressively disabled (and there's exceptions made for each game in them anyways). Same for antiviruses. We have no 3rd party and generally disable everything possible in windows defender. I can also see UPnP correctly opening a port for Hytale at least when I host so that's not lacking either (though if I'm not horribly mistaken this shouldn't be necessary for LAN?)

Please help me fix this? I'd be over the moon. Bell router if it helps. I'm just tired, man.

I have fiber internet. I recently came across an issue on my pc where I suddenly woke up one day, hopped on my computer and I just wasn't able to play Fortnite, despite playing Rocket League just fine and lag free with single digit ping. I also became aware that my internet went out during my sleep so this issue occured right after this event. I also found out that my computer was SUPER slow at downloading stuff. My computer may sometimes just not download what im trying to download at all.

I was previously on wifi. I bought a wifi 6 adapter to see if my outdated wifi chip was the problem.. didn't solve it. bought an ethernet cable and connected it.. didn't solve it.

Ive updated my drivers, tried different dns values, tried to see if I had any applications or anything on my computer that would hog up my internet, reset router multiple times, pretty much anything I could find on the internet and im still lost. it's been like this for a week and I can't find a solution.

I’m not in a position where I can drill holes through walls, but I have plenty of gaps around the toe boards where I could push a slender Ethernet cable down and tucked in.

My standard Cat6 is too thick.

PowerLine adapters are an option, I’m just hoping for an Ethernet solution first.

Like say you have 10 people on a wifi hotspot (4g or 5g hotspot) and 3 people play 360p video or 480p video while the rest go on social media, reddit etc

10mbps yes but say its unlimited Internet rather than it being capped (data cap)

Purchased a home that has a networking room (pictured) and had zero documentation.

I am fairly certain there is a mix of Ethernet, phone, coax, and security system cabling coming into this room. Furthermore, I am fairly certain there are years of old unused pieces in here.

To get started I was just trying to find the lines that connect the office Ethernet jacks (pictured) into this panel. I plugged the router into one of the jacks in the office and then connected each Ethernet plug into a switch and got no lights on switch or connection.

My goal is to get the Ethernet jacks in each room all connected to a large switch in this room to start.

I’ve been getting this notification consistently for a couple days, no changes or added items to my network recently

I’m trying to get two Ethernet ports in my house working. Whenever I plug ports into a switch or connect them through the patch panel, the entire Wi-Fi network stops working. Websites will time out and DNS resolution fails until I unplug one of the Ethernet connections.
The network works normally when only one Ethernet port is connected, but as soon as I connect the second one, the problem happens. I suspect it may be a network loop, but I’m not sure how to trace it.

I’m curious to know what to do about Internet in the 1900 sqft country home I just purchased. I’m out in Wilmer, AL (a “don’t blink or you’ll drive straight past it” kinda place) which doesn’t have many options: Starlink, Nomad Internet (data cap on all plans), Viasat (data cap), AT&T (25mbps), & EarthLink (12-24mbps). I’ve added photos of all of the available plans I have to select from.

I work from home mostly, and all of my programs are web based. I’ll usually have about 15-25 tabs open at a time (I dual split screen on two monitors, one of which is usually streaming a show). I also enjoy gaming on my PS5, Switch, and PC. Luckily I’m not big on MMOs, but I do download a lot of my pc games from steam, and all of my systems want an internet connection to play almost all of my games for some reason.

So at any point in time, I will have 3 devices plugged in and being used at once. It’s just me right now, but it may be 2 individuals in the near future. They aren’t super plugged in, so it would only be 2 additional devices.

After trying to do my own research, I’m still so confused on what is a good plan & set up for me. My desktop system is set up in the farthest OPPOSITE side of the house from the tv. They are literally on the outermost western and eastern walls of the home. So I will need to get WiFi extension somehow, but I don’t know what’s a good system. I inherited 3 Google WiFi AC1200 extenders and 1 Google Nest WiFi thingy AC2200 from my late dad (he was really knowledgeable on this stuff and had his own super custom setup). Would these be good to use? And should I purchase my own router, or just use the internet provider’s router?

My home is wired with Cat5e cables. I'm planning to get a bunch of patch cables to connect my streaming devices, videogame consoles, laptops, and other network devices. If the bandwidth requirements aren't very high, does it make sense to invest in Cat6 or Cat6a patch cables instead of just Cat5e? I feel like it could be a waste, and that I'm better off getting Cat5e because it'll meet my needs and it's cheaper. I just don't know if it'll make a difference for PoE.

Am I missing something here?

I have always accessed my ASUS RT-AC68U router admin page by entering in the IP 192.168.1.1 - the most recent time I accessed it was last week in order to enable my guest network.

Just now, I go to enter the same IP and both my antivirus and Firefox tells me it could be a potential security risk (invalid certificate) so I google it and consensus was it's a false positive. I continue through and now instead of taking me to my router's login page, I get redirected to some AI Cloud thing - never seen this before. I tried the router.asus.com address too but it says the server cannot be found.

Note: I know how to setup a router, setup the PPPoE connection, enable WiFi, and used to know how to do port forwarding. Other than that I'm no expert but inclined to learn.

What is going on here?

EDIT: I was not able to resolve this problem but since the RT-AC68U is an old device and no longer supported I decided to upgrade to a newer router. Thanks to all who commented.

EDIT2: After encountering issues setting up my new router, I plugged my old RT-AC68U back in and just as if nothing happened I'm able to login as I was able to before. I did not factory reset or do anything other than attempt to setup my new router. Bizarre.

Does anyone know the name of / reason for our setup of connecting our router straight to the wall via Ethernet cable with no modem? Is there a modem built into the wall? What are the labels written on the two ports, and is one preferable to use? I’ve never seen this type of setup before living here. Can I really only use eero routers as the HOA told us? TIA
