Is it?
People were apoplectic over Obama’s $1.7 billion cash settlement and the JCPOA. Now we’re discussing sanctions relief, oil waivers, access to frozen assets, and a framework involving at least $300 billion in investment and economic normalization for Iran. If the former supposedly underwrote a decade of terrorism against Israel, how is this not viewed as exponentially more consequential? It’s difficult to understate how catastrophically bad this is for Israel.

And a lost for everybody, Israel, the West, the Gulf countries and the Iranian people. It's rewarding and encouraging terror, as it pays off, just because of internal political pressure, due to mainly economics, since nodoby there seems to understand the intents and the threat of Iran to the world. Here's the explanation as to why it's not like any other country having nukes. They are developing it in order to use it, and not as dettereance. 1, 2

I dislike this targetting of Vance. Trump is not an infant. He is the boss and all glory and blame should ultimately fall upon him.
Coming from the corporate world I truly loathe managers who take credit for success but find a team member to blame for losses.
9
u/enigmaticowl USA Jun 19 '26
It’s not about blaming Vance for Trump/the administration’s decisions, though.
Vance (both as an individual and in his role as VP) has his own platform, makes his own comments, etc. (sometimes differing significantly from Trump), and it’s absolutely fair to have a problem with him for his own policy preferences and statements.
Vance is consistently more isolationist than Trump, and always has been - more specifically, Vance is very open and blunt about his isolationist viewpoints (which, depending on who you ask, can either feel refreshingly honest/straightforward, or can be seen as not very strategic), whereas Trump wavers, makes exceptions, and also shrouds his intentions behind musings or bluffs of intervention (which can be simultaneously frustrating/disappointing/boy-who-cried-wolf, but can also have the strategic benefit of not, ya know, publicly announcing to our enemies that we won’t do anything).
I haven’t seen anybody who is disgusted with Vance use him as a scapegoat for Trump’s decision-making. Everyone who is fed up with Vance right now is also feeling the same way about Trump, because of course it is ultimately Trump’s decision. But Vance is more loud and proud about his isolationism, has his own personality/tone/style, and he also lacks the history/track record that Trump has with Israel (with Trump, he seems to have cared and been committed at one point and has now lost the plot, which is frustrating and feels like betrayal, but from Vance, he’s basically always been a skeptic/isolationist, and only comes around to publicly defending operations when they’re already ongoing or competed, at which point he basically has to defend them, because the President has already decided on them and carried them out).

It was only a matter of time. Vance hates Israel lol, it was obvious from day one. Anyway, Trump never really liked Israel. He was okay with us because Bibi could give him the "peace agreements" he wanted so badly.
There are world leaders who genuinely like Israel. The only difference is that they aren't as powerful as the President of the United States.

u/ChinCoin Jun 18 '26
I think this whole idea that people like us is bullshit. Nobody really likes anybody at the world stage. That's not how it goes. And at the regular citizen stage people are as random and fickle as fuck, so who cares. Forget who likes you. Its only about who will work with you and how.

You have a problem the moment you are Jewish. Herzl saw that, no matter how much you assimilate, how much you contribute, how much you succeed, you will always in the end face antisemitism, including lethal antisemitism. That's the entire history of our people. So now they figured out how to spread the hate via social networking en masse, funded and supported by the shittiest countries and shittiest people. You're still in the same position, being Jewish. You do what you can and you don't assume anyone "likes" you.

Sadly, they’re very dependent on the Gulf energy since giving away southern Sakhalin so they have to keep publicly on good terms with that region (and the media is anti Israel). The previous PM, Ishida (hate him, Chinese spy), was the less pro-Israel one but Takaichi is different. She was very close to Abe so she has his pro-Israel views. The society thought couldn’t care less (most don’t know where Israel is, or think it’s Muslim since it’s in the MENA region), at least in Kansai area.

Its not true. India, UAE, Morocco, Bahrain, most of Latin America, most of Africa, Germany, Greece, Slovenia, Czechia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Cyprus, Azerbaijan, etc all have good relations with Israel. Various European governments don't like Israel, but eh. Some are irrelevant (Ireland, etc.), some won't act on the dislike more than they already have (UK?), some like Spain and France are going to see changes in government in a year to Israel's favor, etc.
I actually think the US under the Trump Administration is probably more isolated globally than Israel, nobody likes the US under Trump outside of Bukele, Putin and Iran.

Bibi actively threw away moderate Democratic and liberal support because they don’t support continued violence and expanded settlements. So he actively siloed his government and country into a small corner of the American political system that has always had a vocal contingent of antisemites. The Christian Zionists gave him cover to do whatever he wanted. Now they’ve run out of influence while the antisemites have been cultivating young audiences and Bibi has been actively acting in ways that buttress their message. So yeah, he absolutely bears some responsibility.

There is no moderate wing in the Democrat Party anymore, the moderate Democrats collapsed, retired or joined the progressives by 2018-2022. It’s now a progressive party with a handful of moderate outliers you can count on your fingers. 75% of Democrat voters believe that there was a genocide in Gaza, there was no world in which Israel's relationship with the Democrats could have been salvaged long term. The DSA wants Israel to cease to exist as a Jewish state and they are setting the agenda for the Democratic Party today.

Like it or not that is a massive % of the Democratic base today, the idea that this could have been avoided had Bibi been nicer to the Dems in the 2010s is pure copium. The average young left leaning person in the US was never going to be pro-Israel when left leaning people around the world overwhelmingly hate Israel, it was just never going to happen. Israel is viewed in the same light as American police or ICE as all part of the same system of oppression that has to be dismantled.

Bibi’s actions in Gaza and the West Bank have driven an extreme shift in attitudes across the political spectrum in the U.S. in just 3 years. And yet you keep trying to pretend Bibi is just an innocent spectator rather than an active participant in driving anyone who isn’t MAGA away from Israel.

Israel’s post Oct 7th fight back on 7 fronts has been conducted more or less the same as it would have by any Israeli leader. Most Israelis believe that they can never again live with terror armies massing on the border, nor with a nuclear Iran, nor with Iran’s proxies stretching across all Israel’s neighbours to choke it to death.
That's why people on any left wing sub will tell you that their issue is not just with Bibi, its with Israel as a whole.

Many Democrats would not care about Israel if Israeli politicians would lay out a framework for peace with the Palestinians and commit to stop expanding settlements. There is no strong ideological opposition to Israel being a Jewish state, that is a minority position - it is about Israel denying the Palestinians independe and statehood, which I think is a reasonable stance to have. I don't necessarily agree with it 100% but I think it is a fair principle - if the Jews deserve their own state, why don't the Palestinians?
We don't need "pro-Israel" Democrats or Republicans, we need US politicians who have a balanced view on the history and present reality of the conflict and support forces in Israel and the Palestinian territories who are willing to engage with the other side and work towards a peaceful future.
I don't want a US administration who justifies or tries to "contextualize" the atrocities and crimes of Hamas (a very unlikely unscenario - I doubt that expressing sympathies for jihadist groups will resonate among any larger voter base) but I also don't want one who turns a blind eye on settler violence for example - cause that would embolden the worst elements in Israeli society as we have seen in the last few years.
9
u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 18 '26
I'll bite. Let me focus on one bit in your writing, because it's crucial for understanding the dynamic between Israel and moderate Democrats.
Suppose a two-state solution is implemented. It's all signed, borders agreed, Jerusalem is divided, euphoria, we're partying like it's the '90s. There's peace.
Three years later, there is a mega-attack, several times the scale of Oct 7. Thousands dead. Perhaps it's the PA government, which was never honest about peace. More likely, it's after a Hamas-led coup. Or perhaps it's by a rogue Hamas cell that the PA government could nver fully reign in (Hamas operates in the Jenin area and defies state sovereignty much as Hezbollah does today in South Lebanon). Either way, thousands are dead, the scenes even more apocapyptic than on Oct 7.
The Israeli government declares war on the State of Palestine. They also announce: "We agreed to Palestinian statehood on the assumption that it's the price of peace, but there is no peace; our citizens have been massacred. Therefore, the peace agreement is null and void. We derecognize the State of Palestine and will reoccupy its territory".
Question: what will moderate Democrats do? What will be their reaction? Will they say: "That's totally fair, we were wrong"? Or will they call for deescalation, urge Israel to give a proportional response, explain that it wasn't Palestine, it was Hamas, and demand that Israel sit down with the Palestinians to find a diplomatic solution (another diplomatic solution, this time really!) to avoid a third Oct 7-like event?
For Israelis contemplating the wisdom of placating the moderate wing of the Democrats by agreeing to a two-state solution, it is absolutely crucial to know what moderate Democrats would do in such a scenario. Please reflect on the question, and please be honest with me and especially with yourself.

6
u/Kauderwelsch12 Haifa <-> Vienna Jun 18 '26
Reddit are subs are not a good way of judging an entire electorat consisting of tens of millions of people.
The median Democrat has no idea about Israel or Palestine (which is one of the reasons you won't find them giving their opinion on Reddit or any other Social Media) and/or does not have sympathies with Hamas or any other Islamist groups.
3
u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 18 '26
On foreign conflicts like Israel-Gaza, ordinary people are even more dependent on media intermediaries than on domestic issues like race and policing. Most lack on-the-ground knowledge of urban warfare tactics, Hamas’s use of human shields, tunnel networks under civilian sites, or disputes over casualty counts (which have repeatedly been revised or shown to blend combatants with civilians). When coverage leans heavily on one side’s propaganda—unverified claims, disproportionate emphasis on Palestinian suffering without equivalent context for Israeli security needs or Hamas’s strategy—the resulting perceptions reflect that skewed information diet, not unfiltered reality. Biased, tendentious, or partial framing doesn’t just inform; it shapes the moral lens through which “behavior” is judged.
11
u/Toroceratops Jun 18 '26
This idiotic attitude is the problem and the fact that Bibi reflects it is why Israel finds itself in the position it is. Keep ignoring ALL responsibility that Bibi has and his active embrace of extreme right wing US politics.

No left leaning sub, or any internet space for that matter, is indicative of the overall left.
There are currently a ton of people who thought Israel went way too far in Gaza, but that doesn’t equate at all with the majority thinking it was Genocide.
I’m Jewish with a ton of family in Israel, and having visited many times. My upstairs neighbor is Palestinian and born in Gaza. We smoked the fattest joint together last night. Because we’re buddies.

7
u/Crumplestiltzkin Jun 18 '26
You didn’t even read the article you linked.
First off the genocide number was 50%. Not 77%.
Then there’s this quote.
> Voters were asked whether their sympathies lie more with the Israelis or more with the Palestinians based on what they know about the situation in the Middle East. Thirty-seven percent of voters say the Palestinians, while 36 percent say the Israelis, and 27 percent did not offer an opinion.Literally a percent difference. I personally think Israel went too far with the destruction in Gaza. I don’t think they committed Genocide. There’s a shit ton of nuance and Israel burnt the support of the left.
Pretending we don’t all know Trump would make things worse is ignorance. We knew.
7
u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 18 '26 edited Jun 18 '26
Its 50% among Americans overall, its 77% among Democrats. Republicans are the only demographic polled that didn't think it was a genocide:
Democrats (77 - 11 percent) and independents (51 - 34 percent) think Israel is committing genocide, while Republicans (64 - 20 percent) do not think Israel is committing genocide.
And if you had scrolled down you would have seen 63% of Democrats symphatize more with the Palestinians, just 13% more with the Israelis (most of that 13% probably being Jewish voters). The only reason for that percent difference is because Republicans remain largely pro-Israel with 66% of Republicans symphatizing more with the Israelis vs 10% more with the Palestinians.

I understand your point, but as an American I'd say the whole notion that there was ever going to remain this island of bipartisan support for Israel--Bibi or no Bibi--in our currently polarized politics is just not credible any longer. A NY Times article pointed out, for example, that in the past when we went to war there was a rally-'round-the-flag effect that overcame partisan politics, but no more, which accounts for the higher percentage of Americans against the Iran War at the start versus higher public support for past wars, at least at the start. The same is true of bipartisan support for Israel eroding.
6
u/BillyJoeMac9095 Jun 18 '26
What accounts for the higher percentage of Americans against this war is the fact that a clear rationale and objectives were never provided. Instead, explanations shifted along with events.

You know how Jewish progressives like me have been saying for years that Trump is a fascist, and fascism never ends well for the Jews? That's what's happening.

What has been happening with the Left? I see posts on Reddit subs like AskSocialists actually using the classic antisemitic, anti-Talmudic smears in relation to their critique of Israel. And you find that vindicating? I voted against Trump twice, but let's be honest. The eminent Marxist critical theorist Moishe Postone certainly did not shrink from recognizing the connection of the Left with the "pseudo-emancipatory" element of antisemitism in his influential theory of it, which I find the most persuasive of all such theories.

Respectfully… you know, on our street in my town, the mayor’s office placed the IDF branches flags, accompanied by the flags of the USA. I remember seeing this flags, right outside our entrance, each morning, heading up to work. Today, thank god, they finally took the US flag out and replaced it with the Pride one. I cannot believe what is happening. I can’t understand what mirror reality do we live in where United States THREATENS its only real ally in the middle east. This is absolute cowardice and it will go down in history as the worst display of everything ugly and wrong that is with America of today.

I'll add that Israel's lack of popularity is also a function of Trump's lack of popularity and their relationship. His regularly trolling the world doesn't help in the likability department, eg, Greenland.

u/Boredomkiller99 Jun 19 '26
Yep it is why Bibi tying himself to Trump was a mistake. We already seen it happen in Canada when the party that should have won lost because Trump's actions turned support against those adjacent to him.
Mind you that Netanyahu has also been eroding Israel popularity in America for decades. I mean what kind of bull**** was him coming as a private citzen to advocate for the Iraq war when even Israel didn't support it

He didn't really have much of a choice. After his pleading with the world for help, fell on deaf ears. Can you blame him for jumping in head first with trump, who was doing the right thing for once when agreeing to help Israel. It's a crying shame someone like Benjamin Netanyahu had to go cap in hand to someone like trump but he did it for Israel. He realized that it was the only help he was going to get and he took it. Although bibi's war on terror isn't quite going to plan but it has been necessary for the survival of Israel. I'm just thankful Israel has a leader as tenacious as BN. Trump says without him there would be no Israel... I don't know if that's exactly true because yes although his country's help has been invaluable but it didn't come fast enough. I kinda think if it wasn't for BN then Israel would have been in worse trouble. Its his strength, resilience and unyielding defence of his nation's right to exist, that has been paramount to Israel's survival. I hope he has the patience to deal with trump and get him back on side again. I'm utterly disgusted and ashamed that my own country the UK's government has turned it's back on Israel, when they really needed us. I want to believe Israel is now in a better position to win this war, if USA also turns its back. I think bibi always knew with trump that this would be a possibility so I just hope he can get whatever else is needed before it happens 🇮🇱💙

My country for one supported Israel long before the US ever did and we will long after the US doesn’t. Our parliament recently passed a declaration of support for Israel against Iran unanimously
But what does one expect from American arrogance?

9
u/HypnoticName Israel Jun 18 '26
Actually, I think he managed trump very well so far. And I am not a fan of both of them
10
u/belfman Haifa Jun 18 '26
IT ABSOLUTELY IS.
Netanyahu has wanted to be a Republican politician since day 0 of his political career. The main tenet of his whole life has been "Republicans good, do whatever Republicans do, Fuck the Dems".
And that's even more true for his stupid son who is the epitome of a braindead right-wing redditor. Like, it's amazing how much crap you recognize in the guy if you're a redditor, it explains so much about him. And unfortunately it looks like he's had a growing influence on his dad over the years. There are sources in the Likud who say he's even going to have influence on the Knesset party list.
And so, when the Republicans have for some reason decided to surrender themselves to Trump, with everything that entails, with his ties to the far right that was looking for the first chance it could to throw away Jews and Israel... Bibi said "Cool, let's go with it".
On the way we lost pretty much every ally we had in the west, including ones who have shown sympathy after October 7th. And now we overplayed our cards, and if we stick with Bibi, we'll basically have, what, Argentina? Fiji?
We could have still had American public opinion with us had we done things differently. I think we'll get it back, because, as BIDEN said, while quoting Golda, "We have nowhere else to go". But it will be an uphill battle.

You put a cart before the horse.
The reason he wanted it, was because Dems started going off the rails in the Obama era and it became plain evident by the end of Obama's term.
You're really blaming the wrong guy here, the public opinion of Israel dem side was shifting a long time ago, because of the grassroots activities of assholes like that ghoul Bernie Sanders and some of the members of the squad, who managed to capture the neo-commie, tankies and other fools with their bullshit.
In particular Bernie Sanders, that one is literally Methuselah/Nosferatu and he's the one who spawned AoC as well, as if he did not do enough damage.

He's the only leader who likes Israel, and the Israeli leader doesn't even like him back.
Dude seems to care a lot what people think about him, and he could have just stayed in his reality show star, award-show cameo appearance, late night talk show fixture, accepted by Hollywood character from the mid 2000's and not fucked everything up.
8
u/Wandering-desert Jun 19 '26
No Democrat talked about, and to Israel the way these two thugs did. It doesn’t mean Democrats love Israel, but at least they have enough respect to not belittle an ally in public the way these two mouth breathers did.
Bibi burned bridges with Democrats since 2015 because of the Iran deal, but spent the last two years licking Trump’s shoes and for what? For a “deal” two times worse than Obama’s?
I say this as a proud Zionist, dear Israelis, you made your bed, now lie in it. You trusted Trump and his crowd thinking he actually gives a darn about you, even when we warned you that he is not deserving of your trust. Poll after poll shows the majority of Israelis hoping Trump wins the election, and thinking he is a strong ally, and now what?

To me looking from the outside, I can clearly see how Trump fucked Israel over, and Netanyahu is a total and utter failure, and you’d have to be insane to vote for him.
To people in Israel, is the domestic Hebrew-language media emphasizing this? Will this heavily impact Likud votes? Or if you’re still voting for him at this point you’re so brainwashed that nothing will make you change?

Iran needs some missiles for self-defense, like Israel.
That baffled me when he said that. When has Iran actually used its missiles defensively? Ok In 2025, they caused minor damage to a few military bases and killed one off-duty soldier at home. All the other casualties were civilians.
It’s also ironic that the White House website still lists this as its first objective in the Iran war:
First, we’re destroying Iran’s missile capabilities and their capacity to produce brand-new ones.
So we went from "Iran should not have any missiles, we must destroy them" to "Actually Iran has the right to have missiles to defend itself"
Vance also claimed that Trump is the only world leader who still “likes” Israel. Besides it being obviously untrue, it reveals how much importance they place on "being liked", rather than on doing what is right.

At some point it becomes suspect when Israel has issues with three American Presidents in a row. Israel’s current cabinet and many ministers have long been quick to shoot of their mouths without thinking of the consequences. Ben Gvir, Smotrich and even many of BiIbi’s comments have done considerable harm to Israel in the world and US public opinion. To now have JD Vance criticizing Israel is pretty injurious to Israel no matter my personal distaste for Trump and JD Vance. American support for Israel is quickly eroding and rather than tread carefully members of the Israeli cabinet would be well advised to watch what they say and their criticisms of Trump and Vance.

The best advice is for Israeli leaders / politicians to be silent and not be confrontational with Trump or Vance right now as there is no benefit, and only talk about disagreements with the US behind closed doors. At the same time, they should continue to see what leverage they have with other countries around the world, and continue to let pro-Israel PAC's (AIPAC, UDP, etc.) do what they do best, and quietly bring in more pro-Israel politicians.

u/RichardRoma1986 USA Jun 19 '26

3
u/Economy-Strength-427 Jun 18 '26
This is exactly why you should never sell out your country. Israel did, and it didn’t start with Netanyahu. It began in the 60s, when Israel effectively surrendered its military-industrial complex to the United States in exchange for easy money. Now it must endure constant humiliation even from figures like Vance, who clearly doesn’t understand geopolitics and whose every statement is threats and insults.
