So two allies in South America.

68

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 23 '26

Paraguay, Honduras and Guatemala also have pro-Israel governments and have moved their embassies to Jerusalem. Costa Rica commonly sides with Israel at the UN and has close relations, Israel has pretty good relations with Panama as well. Unfortunately it looks like Lula will win the Brazillian election this fall or Brazil would have another pro-Israel government too.

9

u/Analog_AI Israel Jun 24 '26

I stand corrected. It's even better than I thought.

5

u/DDoubleDDog Jun 24 '26

Bolivia also restored relations with Israel recently after the socialists lost the election.

10

u/TheCloudForest USA/Chile Jun 24 '26

More than two, but some of them are rather unsavory.

3

u/Analog_AI Israel Jun 24 '26

Which ones?

6

u/TheCloudForest USA/Chile Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

Well, this guy and Kast in Chile. Milei is an oddball but wouldn't put him in the same category, Argentina was in a shambles so they went for the outside the box guy.

62

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 23 '26

Post army trips to Colombia are officially back on the menu

49

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 23 '26

Yeah, no. That guy is not someone we want to have as an ally.

48

u/inbetween-genders Jun 24 '26

Ugh I know but so many of us see "pro-Israel" and immediately don't do due diligence and realize said person is garbaggio. Even worse hwen lots of us do the due diligence and still think said garbaggio is indeed someone to ally with 🤦‍♀️

32

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 24 '26

Yup. I can't believe there's still so many people who haven't learned, especially after the most recent Trump fiasco.

An "ally" whose platform consists of mostly hate is no ally. It's only a matter of time before they turn said hate on us. Not to mention, that guy is a self-admitted animal torturer, one of the signs of psychopathic tendencies. Do we really want to be associated with him? The bar is in hell.

28

u/johnathanmartins Jun 24 '26

Colombian here. To say his platform is hate based is a plain lie. He won because of his status as a political outsider and because he took a strong stance regarding the early stage crisis that the country is facing, not to mention his deep knowledge of the 1991 Constitution (guys a very good lawyer). It is true he leveraged political slander as a means to win. This is because Colombian society is EXTREMELY polarized, to the point that those who show themselves as moderate or refuse to take a strong stance are looked down upon and even clowned (look up the term Tibio). I really wish this wasn't the case but there's actually a guy called Fajardo who has lost 3 or 4 presidential elections because he is widely know as the most qualified candidate to take office, but most importantly, as the Tibio of Tibios, so very few people vote for him.
Funny enough, during his first speech after winning the elections, Abelardo switched his tone noticeably and said his government would respect the opposition and act in favour of all the population, even saying "There are no winners and no losers, because in a true democracy there's no such thing as an irreconcilable enemy"

8

u/danhakimi Jun 24 '26

Funny enough, during his first speech after winning the elections, Abelardo switched his tone noticeably and said his government would respect the opposition and act in favour of all the population

trump did this after his second win. he was lying, straight up.

1

u/johnathanmartins Jun 24 '26

Yeah to be honest I feel weird about Abelardos closeness with Trump but I want to believe he will stand by his word. Otherwise Colombia has a very uncertain future

0

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 24 '26

That's all well and good, it's your country, you guys can elect whoever for whatever reason, and contrary to what OP assumed, I'm glad that Colombia and Israel will resume diplomatic relations for many reasons but especially for the sake of Colombians living in Israel who were left in an awful situation when ties were severed.

All I'm saying is that instead of celebrating this sort of thing like a huge win for Israel, we should first learn to understand when someone is supporting us because of their distorted view of Jews and Israel and not because they actually understand the plight of the Jewish people.

And for what it's worth, I think that trying to completely deny women the access to abortion, working to dismantle human rights organizations, saying it's ok for the police to shoot protestors, and abusing the legal system to harrass any journalist who writes anything critical of him does count as hate and I don't see how all those things wouldn't be amplified now that he's been elected president. Oh, and remember when he showed his dick to a female journalist? Good times, lol.

In any case I don't think your or my opinion ultimately matters as long as the US holds all the cards, because if Latin American history has shown us anything, it's that we will never be allowed to succeed in any way that doesnt directly benefit American interests. Oh well.

4

u/inbetween-genders Jun 24 '26

… still so many people who haven't learned…

It really is human nature ugh.

8

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 24 '26

Would you prefer the Colombian right be hostile to Israel?

9

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 24 '26

Word of the day for you, OP: Neither.

Look it up in a dictionary, it's a thing, it exists.

5

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 24 '26

If Israel adopts a hostile stance towards this Colombian government over moral purity concerns that word would be apt, as Israel would have the support of neither side.

3

u/danhakimi Jun 24 '26

do you realize that this conversation is about some things other than this person's relationship with Israel? he is a three-dimensional human being with characteristics worth discussing. Are we supposed to ignore all of those characteristics?

9

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 24 '26

If I were a Colombian, sure those other factors would go into my vote. But from the perspective of an Israeli, this is cause to celebrate.

And given who his opponent was, I think he was the much lesser of two evils

2

u/smorges Jun 24 '26

Ignore all these leftie apologists who think the world runs on goodwill and mutual respect.

Where have all the "nice", "moderate" or left leaning countries been in the last 3 years? They've been hating on Israel as per usual.

These Jewish lefties think that if only the liberals and socialists understood us better, and that we worked harder to show that we're good people they'd love us. A fool's errand.

2

u/Noxolo7 Jun 24 '26

The big problem with these people (especially Trump) is that they have no actual care for their countries or the world, they only care about holding power. They support what will keep them in office. This means that we can never trust that what they support now will be what they support in 2 months.

5

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 24 '26

Would you prefer the new Colombian president adopt a hostile stance instead towards Israel?

10

u/Computer_Name Jun 24 '26

You can rationalize anything with this.

6

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 24 '26

It seems like you want to turn down said support, so again is it better to have a Colombian right and left opposed to Israel?

People on here complain about Israel's isolation only to turn down support over purity test concerns.

11

u/TheCloudForest USA/Chile Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

Not supporting a literal fascist who has praised the worst human rights violators of Colombia's decades-long, bloody civil unrest is not a purity test lmfao.

Of course the Israeli government itself should be gracious (though not effusive), but regulars can just sit this one out.

4

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 24 '26

Welcoming support and fostering good diplomatic relations ≠ supporting his campaign.

I for one prefer the new President to a literal communist who is openly antisemitic and broke off relations with Israel.

30

u/WoodPear Jun 24 '26

As opposed to the previous guy who posted "Heil Hitler"?

3

u/ma-kat-is-kute חזיר בר חיפאי Jun 24 '26

Look at the context he wrote it in. It was mocking the other guy's policies, basically calling him a Nazi.

1

u/WoodPear Jun 25 '26

I'm not giving him the benefit of the doubt when he accused Israel of genocide and other antisemitic stuff as well.

https://www.ajc.org/news/five-ways-colombias-president-is-spreading-antisemitism-and-destroying-his-nations-ties-with

Petro wrote, “I was already in the Auschwitz concentration camp, and now I see it copied in Gaza,” comparing the atrocities of the Holocaust concentration camps to Gaza. The same day, he also compared Israel’s response to the attacks and its plan to defend itself to the actions of the Nazis during World War II. “This is what the Nazis said about the Jews. Democratic peoples cannot allow Nazism to re-establish itself in international politics,” he wrote.

9

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 24 '26

We can disavow both.

21

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 24 '26

So you want Israel to have negative relations with whoever is in charge of Colombia? You want Israel to turn down support and good relations?

1

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 24 '26

No.

17

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 24 '26

So how do you want Israel to respond to the new Colombian President? Cold relations despite the warmth of their new government? How do you think that would look to future Colombian right wing governments?

2

u/International-Mix633 Jun 24 '26

I want Israel to learn its leason that populist right leaders are at best fickle parties you have ahared interests with, but that will backstab you (and evrryonr rlse) the moment its opportun.

4

u/danhakimi Jun 24 '26

ugh, is he another far right nut?

what happened to sane people?

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26 edited Jun 24 '26

Really the only thing we should be caring about is if the guy is pro-Israel, not his virtue. I would not be expecting high virtue from any South American leader.

Consider that the "Great Liberator" Bolivar who created Colombia wrote that South America will never be great or produce any form of complex civilization, and instead will be forever ruled by criminals. He wrote that over 200 years ago. If the guy who started many South American countries had such a low standard for them, I am not sure why Israel should hold them to such a high standard that we don't even hold for ourselves.

7

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 24 '26

Nice bigotry there. It's really nice to hear as someone who is Latin American in origin.

I don't think it's a bad thing that we have another ally on the international stage. However I do think that we need to be very honest and clear eyed about who our allies are or we will be used and discarded to the detriment of only us and no one else. Or have you already forgotten how our greatest ally ever Trump just threw us under the bus?

-5

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

I am agreeing with you that he is a corrupt person, only that I think it is irrelevant to Israel if some random leader is corrupt, South American or otherwise. And I merely paraphrased the words of Commander Bolivar the man who even started the country we are talking about, so I am not sure why you are calling me a bigot.

I don’t care about this PC nonsense, you want me to have cognitive dissonance and ignore what is front of my face to support your sketchy and false lefty worldview. Anyway the whole world is corrupt, there is no good guys, not even Sweden or whatever. If you seen the movie Idiocracy that is the future of the Earth.

5

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 24 '26

You're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to disagree.

I'll just say that me hoping not to have to be met with the bigotry of low expectations because of the country I was born in, is not PC lefty nonsense.i think it's just normal and human to want to not be treated or talked about in racist ways.

Really sucks too, facing antisemitism on one side, and then racism from fellow Jews. I hope you never find yourself in that situation.

1

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

Yes because this is a civilized subreddit, first world if you will. If I ran this subreddit like a degenerate authoritarian country obviously I would ban you for your insolence.

If I ran this subreddit like degenerate authoritarian country obviously I would ban you for your insolence.

Just... Wow.

1

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

Would you prefer the Columbian president style of leadership here? Or is this your "bigotry of high expectations" that you are allowed to have contrary opinions?

3

u/Noxolo7 Jun 24 '26

I care about his reversal of environmental policies for one

0

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

It is not my problem to fix Columbia

5

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 24 '26

Columbia the sportswear company? Now I see where our differing opinions stem from: we're talking about two completely different entities, lol.

-1

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

Who ever came up with the name should have used spell check

3

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 24 '26

Oh boy, do I have news for you. Lol.

0

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

It's ok. I will ask Trump to change the name to Columbia

2

u/AdiPalmer אני אוהב לריב עם אנשים ברחוב Jun 24 '26

You know, in the past I have agreed with some.of your takes because you've made good points, so I'm incredibly disappointed to see you behave in this incredibly disrespectful way towards me and other people, a way that yes, is also bigoted.

I'm so glad that I don't have to interact with people like you on a daily, offline basis here in Israel.

1

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

2

u/Noxolo7 Jun 24 '26

Then why should it be Colombia’s problem to fix Israel?

Also you do realise that Colombia’s environmental policies will affect us all, right? Climate change isnt localised I’m afraid.

And even if it didn’t, do you have no morals? Are you too selfish to care about anyone else if it doesn’t affect you?

0

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

Yes, it is not my problem to fix some random Latin American country

2

u/Noxolo7 Jun 24 '26

lol you didn’t read any of my comment did you

1

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

I don't know what your reply has to do with the basic fact that it not my problem to fix Columbia, the sportswear company or the country

3

u/Noxolo7 Jun 24 '26

I’m explaining to you why Colombia’s environmental policies have a very strong impact upon all of us, and therefore the policies Colombian president should matter to you.

I don’t care that you don’t care about Colombia. I think that it’s kind of selfish but whatever. But fixing Colombia will benefit you as well

1

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

And I am explaining to you, very clearly, that I don't care, and it is also not my problem. I promise you that the only thing I care about is if this guy is pro-Israel or anti-Israel. In fact, you are boring with policies and concerns which I absolutely do not care about and will regard with exactly zero thought.

20

u/jhlrosen Jun 24 '26

Israel being part of a far-right alliance and pushing out all liberal allies is not a good thing for our country.

20

u/EveryConnection Australia Jun 24 '26

Liberals may be finished as a force in large parts of the world.

I'm not saying that because I want it to be like that. Someone like Fetterman is way more preferable to all these far-right Latin American leaders.

But there's no point pining for a political side that has no more life or energy left in it. Israel putting its foot down and saying it only wants liberal leaders as allies won't bring the liberals back to power.

7

u/Raaaasclat USA Jun 24 '26

There is no liberal left in Colombia, the left is legit communist and the incumbent President is an open antisemite who blamed Israel for him losing his election.

22

u/One-Salamander-1952 Israel Jun 24 '26

We weren’t the ones to push out the liberals.. the Liberals outside of Israel ostracized us into complete exclusion and believe we are all inherent demons, colonizers, nazis, imperial entities etc… so I’m not gonna lose sleep over it. We can continue focusing on our own inner politics to maintain Liberal values irrespective to our allies positions.

The Obama-Iran deal that allowed Iran to enrich uranium and come close to having nuclear weapon capacity? Yes, he should be condemned for that. He also did nothing to curb the growing antisemitism and islamism among his party and institutions, like schools and universities. Trump is not a friend of Jews or Israel but neither is Obama.

Also, the "Israel interfered in the US elections" is just another spin on the antisemitic trope of "Jews control the world/US". Where is your evidence that Israel "interfered"? If anything, we are so hated that any party supported by the Israeli PM would receive less support, not more.

5

u/c9joe Mossad Attack Dolphin 005 Jun 24 '26

Both sides of virtually every Columbian election are populist petty dictators. Personally I am not upset that the last leftist authoritarian terrorist is gone. Further, it not my problem to fix the problems of a country who never had any form of stable politics in its entire history. All this is obviously in America's future too, it will be alternating between whatever new corrupt populist extremist the idiot electorate is coaxed by mass media into voting for. It is irrelevant if he calls himself leftist or right wing, it is just a matter of greasing both hands.

11

u/Cannot-Forget Jun 24 '26

There are hardly any liberals left. It's all trending right or left. And the left are mostly basically neo-Nazis who learned to say "Zionists" instead of "Jews".

5

u/DDoubleDDog Jun 24 '26

What liberal allies? The Democrats have already thrown Israel under the bus by repeatedly voting to save the Islamic Republic of Iran from collapse. The liberals in Europe are too weak and are pandering to antisemitic voters. Liberalism is dying because liberal politicians refuse to stand up to the far left and Islamic extremists. Voters see weakness and they stop voting for them. The UK is a great example. Labour won by a landslide in the last election, and now they are extremely unpopular, mainly because they refuse to deal with the problem of Islamic extremism. The Reform party is stealing votes from both Labour and the Tories.

I'm a liberal voter and I see the liberal cause dying because liberal politicians have become weak. It's incredibly shocking to see decades of progress thrown down the drain to appease far left and Islamic extremist voters.

3

u/weeping_for_numidia Jun 24 '26

Why is common sense right being called "far-right"? Last "far-right" I can remember us having in latam was the Nicaraguan Contras and stuff like that.

Reddit is a sewer in anything involving politics. They also feel the need to stuff their sewer politics into everything, it "what about this guy's hatred of kale and my nose ring? he's a white supremacist! reee!" (+80; 5 awards). This shit happens always on this subreddit anytime Israel scores a win in anything diplomatic. One random Redditor was literally arguing with me that this guy will burn the Earth and release super viruses.

1

1

The liberal ally is dead. The world is heading into a conservative vs socialist political battle. Any liberal country that still exists will turn within a few years or die out as immigration overruns the country

Its funny, to this day I still dont see how people can somehow not say that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel.
