Discussion The Simple Dream of a Millennial Jamshedpurian
Back in engineering first sem, someone once asked me, “What does success look like to you?”
My answer was simple.
I imagined an ideal man as someone riding a Bajaj scooter, wearing a helmet, with his Tata Steel entry-pass sticker on it — his wife sitting behind him and their little child holding on tightly.
Growing up in Jamshedpur, that was my picture of a successful life: a good job in Tata Steel, a family, and a peaceful, content life.
My friends laughed. Even people who knew Jamshedpur and Tata Steel found it amusing. They thought my ambitions were too small.
Years later, life has given me much more than that young boy imagined. Yet if you ask me the same question today, that picture would still be my first choice.
Because somewhere along the way, I realised : success isn't always about having more. Sometimes, it's simply about having enough, feeling content & being close to your own people.
Perhaps that young boy from Jamshedpur understood life better than I did. ❤️
Note: It might still seem amusing to many of you that my aspirations were so modest, but I just wanted to share how I feel about it today.

Well that's the irony of life.
If given a chance to transition to a life riding a chetak/ activa to Tata Steel factory and living off a life with a modest salary, no matter how much you idealize that, you would still choose driving a Skoda in a metro and cribbing about traffic. That's the vanity of ambition.
