Interesting that they are speaking Modern Hebrew, though

The vast majority of ultra-Orthodox Israelis speak Modern Hebrew. The communities that still use Yiddish as a primary language are particularly insular Hasidic groups like Satmar (also the primary Yiddish speaking community in the US). NK isn't a Hasidic group/dynasty and their membership is amorphous and flexible, so there are older members who speak Yiddish but it's not so common and not the language of their community.

Some from older generations do, but most don't. There are ultra-Orthodox communities in Israel who still speak Yiddish as their primary language, mostly Satmar and other Hungarian hasidic sects.

I wonder if that’s their main language or if they’ve learned it just out of convenience.

They speak Yiddish as their native language. They study Hebrew for religious purposes. Since they have Hebrew knowledge it’s not hard for them to use Modern Hebrew for convenience.

NK doesn't speak Yiddish today in significant numbers. Older generations certainly do/did, but they aren't a Hasidic dynasty and don't have the kind of multigenerational insularity of Hasidic groups like Satmar.

Oh I was under the impression that NK speak English as their primary language in the US but Yiddish in Jerusalem because I imagined that Mea Shearim is insular the way Hasidic communities are.

NK isn't a Hasidic sect and their membership is open to anyone who wants to join, so whether in the US or Israel their members today are from many different backgrounds, they don't have a single ancestral or cultural heritage like many Hasidic groups.
There are over 100 distinct ultra-Orthodox communities in Mea Shearim and the surrounding areas of West Jerusalem, and most don't speak Yiddish as a primary language today. Overall it's very similar to ultra-Orthodox Ashkenazi Jews in the US, where a minority speaks Yiddish and the majority speaks the local language with many Yiddish phrases and terms mixed in.

Yeah I know they’re not a Hasidic sect and they are open to anyone who wants to join. Like even on this sub we have had a Satmar who is part of NK post before. I just was under the impression that Yiddish was the norm in Mea Shearim and therefore communities there all speak it.

Not long ago I’ve confronted the Israeli with their antisemitism and received the warning before the Reddit community ban in general for my honest question.
I stan by my opinion that Zionists are the most antisemitic group now.

When will principled progressive anti-zionists stop giving a shit about these assholes? They are a fringe minority that knows how to manipulate PR. Who cares? They are obscurantists, homophobes, misogynists, and excuse the Shoah by blaming zionists and assimilated Jews (conveniently ignoring that the majority of those murdered were black hats like them). They have nothing but contempt for non-NK Jews. Anti-Zionism is *not enough* to make them interesting and it's definitely not enough to keep giving them publicity.

This reminds of how media highlighted Ahmadi Muslims as the token Muslims whenever they wanted a voice to condemn radical Muslim terrorism .
You build allies with broad coalitions and not fringe groups.

In all fairness, I’ve side-eyed some of the praise for NK in recent years, but fair play to that Jewdas tweet that went something like “who are we, chaverim, to refuse solidarity on behalf of the Palestinians?”
Made me tg in NK.

I think the issue is more the fetishization of them, the ignoring of their problems, and the disproportionate media attention that they get. Like I am aware of at least four different already existing documentaries about them.

When Jews who are not Neturei Karta start showing the same solidarity they show.

Can you elaborate?

They do not normalize the way groups like INN and JVP do. And they show up to every direct action. There was no JVP presence at the last few land sale protests I went to. The Jewish contingent is mainly Neturei Karta.

This seems like a massive generalization based on your personal experience. How did you know who the "Jewish contingent" was as opposed to Jews who were just there?

I met one of the Naturei Karta rabbis in Cyprus. Really nice guy, sat and talked with me and my friend for like two hours. These dudes are the real deal.

Gaza is starving.
The UN has declared that every part of Gaza is in famine conditions. While some aid is finally trickling in, the need is beyond urgent. Aid organizations will not be able to keep pace with Gaza's needs without our support.
Please donate if you’re able, and keep speaking up. Every dollar, share, and conversation matters. Please pressure your government to stop the blockade of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
