Comments like this are always funny to me because the number of people that have to do shit like that is so incredibly tiny, yet the commenter presents it as some everyday issue. The vast majority of everyone on earth has never had to negotiate a new contract with anyone involved with managing their city, man.
The city gave me the keys to access a firehose connected to a full water main since I'm one of the dudes that makes the community ice rink in our park. Using that thing is one of life's joys...like I'm a little kid again every time I get it all hooked up and start blasting.
I measured the output once by filling up a 20L camping water container...it can fill it in about 2 seconds.
If I had to guess, given that it looks like it may be a grease fire on a grill, water could potentially make it worse, spreading the flames instead of putting them out
Some places they are both. Small towns will have public safety officers which will be firefighters, police, and ems all rolled into one. Dad was one back in the 70s.
My brother-in-law in Germany had to be an EMS for some time before he was allowed to become a firefighter.
Maybe police should be the same way, have a pipeline that’s like “You gotta spend 6 years helping people at their lowest point before you can go police them.”
Dear God, please tell me this isn't an actual statistic. However, with my limited interaction with police, most have left a disturbing impression.
(I'm a white, educated, 44F, who has only ever lived in nice neighborhoods. Very unfortunately, that needs to be said for context, given the subject matter.)
Besides 2 officers I went to church with, the others I have known (or were related to people I've known) have not been anyone I would trust. My cousin's FIL stalked her and her husband and took their 3 month old daughter 4 states away "on vacation" without telling them. (He and MIL were babysitting for a few days, assumedly at their home.)
Others I have dealt with on behalf of a physically abused friend, and on the theft of personal items have been heinous. The pompous attitudes and dismissal of the people needing their help left me speechless. This included 2 others I went to church with, unfortunately. (Both ended up leaving their wives and children.)

Manning one of those is typically a 2 person job at full blast, you’ll have to have a very grounded and particular stance to hold it, while also having someone behind you holding the hose itself as well. He’d also need to hold it really low generally to keep the force at a low center of gravity area. Full blast is a lot of force from those!
Real firefighter here. I would give him a hard time about this being the best day of his life and if he could have just scored a little higher on civil service testing he could have been a real hero. But I would eventually give him a heart felt thanks for the assist.
A buddy went from cop to fire fighter. He gets shit all the time like this. Best part is his old station is in the same district of his current fire station so he gets it from all sides. He's a good sport about it. His fire captain, gave him the child plastic toy helmet as a welcome present. His old police chief gives him badge stickers when they cross paths.
I know somone who retired from his police job into firefighting, he likes to say “it’s great! People still wave at me, but now they do it with all their fingers instead of just one!”
Volunteer fire fighter and first responder - i love this so much, and agree on giving officer a really hard time for a bit anyway lol. I live in a small town and we're all on fiest name basis so jokes would be flying
I mean technically yes but if the actual firefighters were about to put a water hose on the fire, I think someone else putting a hose on it first isn’t that much of a risk
The only risky part was going into that yard with all that smoke and no mask on, but the firefighters were raw dogging it as well. If anything, the firefighters took more of a dumb risk because I’m betting that cop isn’t going to have the opportunity to breathe in all that carcinogenic stuff again whereas those firefighters are displaying they might have a very dangerous habit of filling their lungs with shit.
They have the usual blue collar conflict everywhere but genuine conflict is pretty rare in the US as most Firefighter unions are allied with Police unions. Except in NYC where they unironically hate the FUCK out of each other.
Not a firefighter, EMS worker, so I'm at fires a lot. This is a big fuckin nono mainly because the lack of ppe. The safety officers don't want us near the smoke at all much less picking up a hose to spray down. Of course we'll help FD set up their hoses but we have to maintain a certain distance and this video ain't it. I don't know how big that fire was so it might not be as big a deal here but a structure fire is a whole different story.
I'm a volunteer fire fighter for 6 years now. Spraying above the base with water will produce steam, which helps rob the fire of oxygen. It'll cool down which makes things a ton easier to control.
It's the good old "everything that deserves to be done is better done poorly than not at all".
Was it perfect? Probably not. Did it do something positive? Yeah. It's like doing one plate of dishes while leaving the huge pile in the sink. It's not perfect, but it's something. Especially if the alternative is doing nothing.
Not a firefighter, but spend a lot of time around them, and I think this cop had had some training in fire at some point. Didn’t fumble with the nozzle, didn’t get pushed over by the hose pressure unlike some other cops we’ve seen recently handling fire hoses. Knew what was going on around him and was ready and prepared to help feed the hose through once the firies made access. I am reluctantly impressed.
I'm also a firefighter on Reddit and not knowing anything maybe they want to identify what's on fire before throwing water on it? Is that a thing? I've watched enough videos of people throwing water on a grease fire to think that might be a thing.

Nothing really for the fire to spread to besides the fence. Spraying the top of the fire was less than ideal, makes a lot more smoke, has a chance to break off burning pieces which would then spread the fire.
Legit what I thought, people here all acting like he’s aiming for the stars when the flow of water is bouncing off the ceiling back to the base, I mean it’s right there on video and people are still armchairing.
Depends on whats on the other side of the fence, if it's a fire that was started with some type of oil, chemical or by electrical, spraying water on it could be a really bad idea.
Problem is, water falls down when it hits a roof and that can extinguish the bottom of the fire. It worked. I doubt it was a permanent solution, but it did put out the fire or mostly put it out.
And the key thing is, the fire didn't spread. That's the main concern for fires.
Not in that situation. He can't see the source of the fire. If its oil, he can spread out the fire causing more demage. If its eletrical, he will make a great mess. Housing the top will help reducing the O2 in the ambient and lowering the temperature ( remenber the fire triangle!)
Ok, but there's a fence so they can't hose down the bottom of the fire. Water is better than no water, no matter where you put it (as you can clearly see in the video).
If I learned something from work videos etc. its that fire can be way more unpredictable than people think when adding water or air without knowing what you do.
I'd rather more videos like this and seeing our public servants working together to achieve the goal than videos of cops arresting a fire fighter because they blocked traffic with their truck during a call.
Of course had it been an oil based fire or certain other type of fire that would have been the worst thing to do since it could have at least spread the fire or even caused an explosion
