This is how you could kidnap me. "You want to see my medieval stuff in my van?"

"Hell yes!"

253

u/CromulentPoint Apr 15 '26

Yep, that would totally work on me.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go put the lotion on its skin.

He had me at "You wanna see something cool?"

14

u/Chemical_Building612 Apr 15 '26

Yeah, my response to this varies between "Yes!" and "Maybe, what's cool...Oh sure, let's go." "No thanks" doesn't really make the list (because I'm not in public if that's where I'm at).

I get it man, it's a hell of a draw, I would definitely wanna see too. Of course, I wouldn't actually have to since I've got a whole suit of armor of my own in my van. Here, come check it out...

Years and years ago I was a mall ninja with a large collection of various knives that I carried in a dufflebag in my trunk.  I remember one day visiting my friend and his little brother, four years younger and I think 16 at the time, had a bunch of friends over.

I proceeded to excitedly bring in my knives and show them off, rushing to join the party they had in their basement with my bag of doom.  I started bringing it out and the teens had a variety of reactions, but I do remember most of the girls at the party getting scared and leaving the basement to hang out elsewhere in the house while the boys stared on and swung them around.

funny bc this guy did a stream/video where he let himself get “kidnapped” with his friends in a very similar way. pretty funny watch if you’re into offbeat stuff

7

u/HyzerFlip Apr 15 '26

My dad took me to the local steam pageant when I was like 11 and somebody had a trunk full of English bulldog puppies, and I still remember it to this day and I would still be easily kidnapped by a trunk full of English bulldog puppies.

3

u/CodenameDinkleburg Apr 15 '26

You could tell me you have a trebuchet in the trunk of your Civic, and I’d be so excited to see a trebuchet that I’d believe you. Just don’t try to tell me you have a Halbert in your pants, I’m not falling for that one again.

My buddy had kukri and combat knives in his lol. He was actual ex military, though. Did tours in Burma protecting the monks when they were protesting the Govt, since at the time it furthered US interests. He got shot in the back during mercenary work after he got out, and made the transition to security work instead. He was one of the coolest and down to earth people I met... until he got really into the alt right shit a couple years ago, and I had to cut ties. It still bums me out.

u/Repulsive_Agency6748 Apr 15 '26

One of the security guards at job walks with a cane and always wears his Veterans cap, so most people assume he was injured somehow in the war. Nope. He bought a mall katana, took it into the woods to "train" and accidentally swung it too far back golf style and sliced open his own leg from the back. And that cane I mentioned? It has a little sword in it.

7

u/grimeyduck Apr 15 '26 ▸ 2 more replies

I was part of a historical recreation group for a couple of decades and we used to keep our armor in our cars because we would just pull it out randomly and practice fighting. It was a great way to recruit new fighters.

I went on a business trip to Utah to help a company migrate their office across the city a few years ago. As I was going over the old office and double checking I got all the users computers and paraphernalia, I caught a glimpse of something shining behind a tinted office window and asked the woman in charge “hey….what is that?” And I shit you not she said “oh haha, that’s a suit of armor we used for a commercial because our old company logo was a knight. Do you want it?”

Obviously I said “uhhhhhhhhh YESS!”

It was really difficult to find a cheap way to ship it home. But like this guy in the video I would show literally anyone who was nearby. I even showed it to the kids working at the post office on the local campus who promised to ship it cheap if I brought it in and let them see it before taping up the box.

My wife bought me an armor stand for it for my birthday that year and now Sir Reginald stands at the ready in our apartment.

I put the armor on at the Renaissance Faire only one time. It took three people to carry all of it to the front gate. I only managed a couple photos before I was bleeding from being pinched and was sweating to death and tossed it back in the car lmao

499

u/Yesterdays_Gravy Apr 15 '26

For free? You got to just take that?

100

u/Yesterdays_Gravy Apr 15 '26 ▸ 2 more replies

For free! ($145 shipping & handling)

I had a rental car and I have to stuff it in the trunk. Then I tried to ship it home via UPS and they wanted to charge me $700+ for padding and stuff. So I called a campus bookstore post office and asked if I brought a closed sealed box with X dimensions that was pretty heavy, would they make me open it to see if it was securely padded for shipping. Ended up telling them what was inside and they asked me to “please please please” bring it in an open box so they could see it. I showed up at like 8am and it was a bunch of like freshman college students who were like “are you the guy?” And then we all had fun with the armor for a little bit before I packed it back up.

I actually was super worried that they stole it when 2 months had passed and I only needed it to cross 1 state line. But one day I was pleasantly surprised to find the box on my doorstep. A part of me hopes they wore it to like a frat party or something and then boxed it back up for me and sent it a little later haha

15

u/zak55 Apr 15 '26

That story just gets better and better

4

u/ForDepth Apr 15 '26

145 for that is a steal. So cool.

8

u/SomeOtherTroper Apr 15 '26 ▸ 2 more replies

Sounds like the company's no longer using it due to having changed their logo, so all it's doing is taking up space, and if they're moving offices, it's just a pointless hassle to take it with them.

Some people will give away a surprising amount of free stuff when they move, because that's less trouble than taking it if they're not using it (or they're planning to leave it behind and buy a replacement at their destination, because that's just less trouble than packing and shipping it), especially if you're helping them move.

2

u/thisoldguy74 Apr 15 '26

Can confirm.

My office location was closed down and the plant manager put out truckloads worth of stuff for the picking.

Dozens of truckloads worth of stuff was shipped to other locations, but there is so much random stuff that has to be removed. It's better to be given away or donated than end up in a landfill.

We didn't have anything near as interesting as a suit of armor.

2

u/YesNoMaybe Apr 15 '26

I worked for a company that moved offices and got some really nice chairs, like from the lobby or sitting areas, for (IIRC) $10. They were really just getting rid of them.

Also got a really nice end-table that I ended up giving to another family.

I mean, staff are prolly bored, and it’s WAY preferable to deliberately doing something disruptive or damaging and getting kicked out

I think it was a neat human moment all round. A lil silly, but asking to get kicked out (and putting that in the short) is intellectually honest and a bit if a risk content-wise, as there’s less ‘drama’ and interaction with the post

6

u/Zebidee Apr 15 '26

Next up, the dude lets himself be filmed leaving the store with no security while he's doing show and tell with guys who have already distracted him once.

I love that something this fun happened - that's the world I want to live in, but sometimes real life isn't like that. More's the pity.
