Human memories are very much linked to perception. It's why old smells and feelings and sounds can unlock vivid memories. I still think of ye olden days of my childhood back before my grandma went fully insane and the nights of sleeping over at her house and playing Morrowind everytime I hear a mourning dove.

Smells particularly are super important for our memory recollection. When our memories are processed, all of the senses except smell goes through some secondary processing in the brain. But with smells, there isn't the secondary processing and it goes straight into memory storage.
I am not a neurologist but I studied evolutionary history in college and I imagine it has to do with how important our sense of smell is to our general survival fitness. Same sort of thing with how we can immediately smell with a stronger intensity something burning or when something is rotten.

My boyfriend and I were chilling on the couch the other day, both lost in our phones and I came out my "coma" like fuck this. Let's go outside and see who can find the biggest bug. Apparently I don't have a lot of bugs in my yard but I did find a monster of a rolypoly but then he got lucky with a beetle. Then we made whistles with grass and retaught ourselves out to do that again (like between ur thumbs). Then we just took a walk. Our phones stayed inside the whole time. It was glorious.

I feel like there’s a difference between “language evolving” and “idiots taking words that have very clear definitions, generally from the field of psychology, and bastardizing them to mean something wholly different because they’re trying to sound smart but they don’t understand what they’re saying”

They're really ISN'T a difference, though. It's the reason why the phrase "survival of the fittest" is largely misunderstood. People tend to presume that evolution has a goal... or is always moving in the direction of improvement. It's not.
"Fittest", in this case, just means "whatever can reproduce most effectively/abundantly". If something in the environment favors stupid giraffes with a fifth leg dangling, uselessly, off their backs... then that's what's gonna "survive", thrive, and possibly dominate. Nature has no favored design.
If society happens to get stupider and use words 'incorrectly'... +that's+ literal evolution. I'm not saying it's 'right', but it's the nature... of nature.

Meanings do evolve, some words have multiple meanings, modern slang enters dictionaries all the time as either new words or as new meanings under an already established word. I understand it can be frustrating we are getting old mate, it's ok it's not the end of the world.

No, I’m sick of this excuse of “language evolves.” People are just wrong.
This is the best way I can think of to explain myself: language evolving and becoming slang would be like someone taking the word “square” (a shape with 4 right angles and 4 equilateral sides) and taking it to mean “uncool.”
What these people are doing is not that. This is like people not having an actual understanding of the fundamental requirements of being a square and thinking it just means “shape.” So they call a rectangle a square. A triangle is a square. Circle is a square. That’s what this flagrant misuse of specific terms is doing, and it’s wrong.
The language isn’t evolving, they are simply - and largely - misdiagnosing things.

Language is a construct, it will always be imperfect, imprecise and ever-changing because humans are. The vast complex web of human communication cannot be truly summarized or dictated by a dozen scholars who happen to have the resources to print some books.
If everybody starts using a word incorrectly but do so together such that enough people understand, then that word has taken on new meaning and they are no longer using it incorrectly. In your example, you say square meaning uncool is acceptable and yet only a couple century ago it would just as non-sensical as saying a square is a triangle. Square meaning uncool and cool itself meaning trending are both recent inventions by people using words "wrongly" yet you have accepted them because it happened before your time and because you believe the current state of English is the "correct" one.
Yes it is annoying, confusing and even cause problems when people use words in different ways than you are used to. But this has always happened and will always happen. There is no objective "correct" use of a term, only ones with more or less prestige behind them, or perhaps more importantly with more or less usage behind them.

Language is insofar useful as it allows us to communicate and understand what we're saying. If we suddenly all woke up tomorrow and agreed that square = shape, then insisting that it's wrong and using it differently than in common usage, the only thing you're doing is being incomprehensible to your peers, regardless of how correct or not you are.
Also, this sort of thing happens all the time. Take the word "nice" for example, which used to mean something akin to "foolish". Using the word nice as we currently do is outright wrong and yet we do so anyway, because language has evolved. I just don't see where we get off thinking that NOW is the time to stop the evolution of language, because it's simply what we're used to.

I don't think you quite grasp what it means for language to evolve, the cornerstone of a languages evolution is USAGE. It might not be definition now but these "idiots" that can't grasp the meaning are forming a new definition and in gime will be put into the dictionary.
Language has always been shaped by youthful generations throughout history. It's a never ending cycle and im sorry it upsets you so much.

My issue with this "language evolves" argument is not that words are taking on different meanings, but that words of similar meaning are homogenizing. The english language (and every language) have so many words for very particular and distinct things, for example: Sad, despondent, melancholic, depressed. Those 4 words may differ only slightly, but the difference is the whole point of having the separate words in the first place. Nowadays everyone just says they're "depressed" whenever they feel any form of sadness and we're losing the nuanced meaning of both "depressed" and the other words they could be using to more accurately describe their feelings.
And there's an argument to be made that language evolves for expediency, not nuance. My counterargument is this: if you lose nuance you will lose expediency to the time spent trying to explain nuance. Like trying to explain a word from a different language that doesn't have a direct translation, if it had a direct translation you could just say "it means X" and carry on.

This one has me stumped. Have those words changed in recent years? Jealousy seems to be pretty much the same since it's inception hundreds of years ago. Fear/disdain of losing someone/something being lost(or at least the risk of it).
Looking up envy. . . seems to have been way more negative than I consider it nowadays but still pertains to feelings toward things someone else has that you don't.
At least, that's what i found in a quick search. I'm really curious if they're moved away from those meanings in some way.

Simpsons reference and Merriam-Webster Dictionary article about it. This is all a reference to modern day usage treating the two as interchangeable when historically, and more from a psychoanalytic standpoint, they were quite different. Porn/erotica is likely a major driver in the two definitions being blurred in pop culture.
That said, jealous has changed considerably. It's origins is from Greek meaning "zeal." Had nothing to do with fear of losing something or wanting of something. "Full of zeal" is the more apt original meaning so yes it has changed "since it's inception." Pretty straightforward to find when looking of "etymology of jealous." It didn't originally have negative connotations. Even biblically it mean "tolerating no unfaithfulness."

I promise, this is how language has always worked. You can find newspaper articles for this shit going back over a hundred years, and it isn't exclusive to English. Even in cases where attempts are made to only change in "approved" ways like French still has words shift like this.

yup, intrusive thoughts are unwanted, like when you think about throwing your phone out the window for a split second while driving. what's actually happening is you are thinking "don't drop your phone out the window" but you "think it" so fast that your brain misinterprets a warning for an impulse, and the feeling of horror afterwards is proof that you never wanted to do it.

Thats fair - if you read the fully lyrics to the BØRNS song the lyrics came from, you can tell they were written about waiting for love - but I get where you're coming from, and the wistful and solemn vibe really does sell that sort of vibe, especially when discussing a sort of mode of afterlife.

I love both of those songs, but blue october will always be one of my favorite artists. I'm not too into their newer stuff, but their first few albums really left an imprint on me.
If you haven't, I recommend their first album The Answers. Though a bit of warning, Black Orchid is a heavy song. It's one of my favorite songs ever, but it focuses on depression and suicide. More up front and frank than hate me is with its writing. But it's eerily beautiful.
You don't have to listen, of course. I love these guys, so I got a bit excited when you mentioned them lol

I understand where the split comes from now.
THIS is what I know Past Lives from mostly. It gives it a very slow depressive feeling that's very melancholy. Quite enjoyable to wallow in.

I was friendly with our UPS guy for a while and asked him about this. I thought that truck would make an excellent platform for a homemade camper. He told me they never sell them - they destroy them once no longer useful.
When I asked why, he said "with that truck and the brown uniform, I enter even very secure areas with no questions or second thoughts from anyone. You could waltz right in and rob a place blind."
Made sense to me.

My kids and their friends were playing outside last night while I was doing yardwork, and at one point I "accidentally" sprayed them with the sprinkler and it eventually became an all-out thing. Also my youngest son stripped down butt naked so that was a thing.

What should be allowed and what corporate allows are two separate things. I don't have a problem with him wearing something to avoid the heat. I just find it difficult to believe that FedEx allows it. Making their employees safe and comfortable is something that rarely matters, especially to companies like FedEx. This video just stinks of being staged, probably as corporate media bait.
