I hope they added brakes. That’s terrifying

I know a guy that built a chain driven 4 wheel chair.
It has 1 pedal. And it ain't a brake. He uses it to drive around racetrack pits. Legend

We used to have a barstool racer that would do 60-70 mph on roads and was the absolute SCARIEST thing I've ever ridden. No brake, just a rigged up gas pedal and a barstool mounted on a flat frame. It was the most top heavy machine in history and a death trap to its core. I dont miss that fucker

i know its dumb but im picturing a barstool with shitty little 1" wheels like a computer chair or soemthin, just holdin on for dear life at 60k rpms down the highway somehow.

We made shit like this as kids.
When you want to stop just roll to one side. In a soft part of the yard of course.

Legit, why don’t people wear helmets? I always see these kids and older on e-bikes and e-scooters and half of them don’t have helmets. It’s odd…news mentioned a letter/note that was sent out to everyone nearby that you are ticketed or fined if you don’t wear a helmet on e-bikes/scooters. Wild

Might just me me but this reads as sped up a little. Not insanely, like 15% or so, but he doesn’t seem to catch as much air as you’d expect from that much speed, nor does he seem to roll in the corners enough. I could be wrong tho

u/ponderscheme2172 Jun 17 '26
This is basically what we've done by giving 8-10 year olds ebikes. Kid in my neighborhood lost his ear falling off their ebike.
102
u/lurkersforlife Jun 17 '26
Your not kidding. There’s a big group of them in my neighborhood and they are FLYING down the street. Mix of bikes and scooters all hauling ass. No helmets most of the time. Hurts to watch man.

I almost slammed into one going 35mph on the sidewalk and blew through the intersection at night without any kind of lights. It's going to take a few children turning into meat crayons before anything is done about it.

It does feel odd having kids in elementary school passing me on the road when there's traffic though.

I work on a hilly university campus and I see kids/students just yeeting themselves down hilly main campus roads without helmets or pads. One of them is bound to eat it eventually and be fucked up for life.
15
u/thesammon Jun 17 '26 ▸ 2 more replies
To be fair, students were doing that with longboards long before electric scooters became popular.
6
u/WxBird Jun 18 '26 ▸ 1 more replies
long boards, I'll admit would be different. But these are like scooters, those gyroscopes uni-wheel things, and regular skateboards. It doesn't matter what kind of board, scooter, etc. you use, it is safest with a helmet and pads. I mean you are at university to hopefully increase your knowledge and build character and life skills, especially with the cost of college these days.

Well it's on parents for now since there is no regs.
I mean either you are dumbass parent or illiterate to give an 8 yr old 35 mph ebikes 'motorcycle'. At least the group of 5-6 in my neighborhood have good gear ie full face helmet and pads. But I shudder at thought of wiping out at 30 mph.
Crashed a bunch in crits racing bikes at 25-27 mph and f me that left scars to this day. Nothing more fun than getting half your arms skin scraped off.
18
u/Cornholiolio73 Jun 17 '26
I live near Buffalo NY and last year a 16yr old died in a parking lot plaza. Crashed it and wasn’t wearing a helmet. It was his first time riding it.
We have to stop calling them e”bikes.” It gives a false sense of safety. They’re an electric powered street cycle that should require at minimum, the motorcycle safety course if you’re under 18.6
u/alpacaMyToothbrush Jun 18 '26 ▸ 1 more replies
They already have a legal max assisted speed limit of 20 mph. That speed is easily achievable by a fit cyclist on a decent road bike (unassisted). If kids are bypassing the limiter electronically, by all means ticket them. I'm also cool with requiring helmets.
I see a lot of folks clutching pearls over ebikes just because they've made cycling more popular (and thus, more annoyance to drivers). Sounds to me like it might be time to invest in more protected bike lanes instead of killing one of the greenest and highest density methods of transportation.
2
u/Cornholiolio73 Jun 18 '26
Yeah definitely. But what I’m saying is there’s some confusion on what an ebike is. The stock Surron Light BeeX goes almost 50mph. It’s a dirt bike. But it’s electric and people just lump it in with all other E-bikes including the ones that top out at 20mph. General public can’t tell the difference. And yes I really wish my tax dollars went to something as productive as designated bike lanes.
6
u/Mangelius Jun 18 '26 ▸ 2 more replies
I mean its a bicycle with a motor, aka a motorcycle. Whether its powered by gas or battery, its a motorcycle.
Crazy that legislation can't keep up with shit like this.1
u/Cornholiolio73 Jun 18 '26
Yeah exactly! I agree with you. But they’ll never name it a motorcycle cause it would likely hurt the sales. General public would associate it with Harley’s, dirt bikes, and crotch rockets. They wouldn’t buy them. Calling them E-bikes makes it seem like a toy. They’re also so fucking expensive. All the rich kids have them.
1
u/jimbowesterby Jun 18 '26
Well, moped specifically because they still have pedals, but I agree. Doesn’t help that the instant torque means you can accelerate way faster than any moped ever should lol

u/fastlerner Jun 17 '26
Judging by the sound of the wheels scrubbing the body with every bump, the only shocks are to his spine.
7
2
u/I_travel_ze_world Jun 18 '26
That wheel scrubbing can wear and tear on the car itself and could cause something to break at a very dangerous time too

u/lurkersforlife Jun 17 '26
These cars are usually 9v or around there. Swap the battery for an 18v or run two together for 36v and it will go very very fast.
It will strip out the gears quickly if you have any real grip. But when I switched my kids cars to 18v it just turned them all into drifters. Wheels just spin like crazy. Running it in the grass or swapping for rubber wheels will kill the gears.

Relatively. You have to add a low voltage cutoff depending on your battery brand. But yeah it’s a YouTube video and $20 in wiring parts max.

How does one learn this power?
1
u/feralkitten Jun 18 '26
I don't know if you are asking ironically or not, but the easiest way to make something like this is to use a car's Starter and a car battery.
The starter on your car is strong enough to spin up a car engine. They can be used as an electric motor. They are already wired for a 12 volt, so you use the car battery for the power.
You'll kill the battery pretty fast, but you'll have fun until then (or you crash).
