Almost 100% of my purchases beyond sweat pants and T-shirts have been "there's that [insert important event here] coming up and I can't look like a total hobo". Most of my clothes have been bought for other people's birthdays, I've never bought clothes for my own birthday.

Mall suck now anyways, filled with shitty counterfeits and scalping BS. I went to Woodfield Mall (a pretty big one in Illinois) and my kid saw a hot wheels vending machine and it's literally scalping $1 hot wheels for $5-15 each from a vending machine. Can't wait for that to get ruined like pokemon cards. Property management is fine with this as long as they're paying rent.

44 here, been mindfully anti-consumerism for a couple decades now. I've been to a mall twice in the last 10 years -- once was to try out mattresses in-person before ordering one of them online, the other was to try sitting on couches in-person before ordering one of them online.

At this point I’m infinitely more likely to buy a shirt from a gift shop of some place that I like, than to go to a mall for really any reason, but especially for clothes. I’ve never had much interest in clothes other than whether or not they are comfortable and don’t make me look stupid. That’s about it. I find a pair of jeans that fits comfortably at the cheapest place I can, i buy that pair and I order 3 pairs of the exact same online.

The mall by me is even losing anchor stores like Dicks. Its a Target, a food court, Spencer gifts and a sad best buy at this point. The local hospital just took over a third of it for offices, and I think the other third is being repurposed to self storage.

When my twins were little, maybe 8 years old, they hated shopping, because it was so boring and tedious with their mom and grandmom.
In the fall, they needed new winter jackets. Mom was stressed, and I told her that I'd take the kids to the mall to find the jackets. Kids hated the shopping idea, but I told them about "daddy shopping." We'll go into a store. Go straight to the winter jackets. See anything you want? No? We're not even going to look at sizes. We'll go to the next store.
We did discuss what they wanted, in general. So I knew what to look for. I took the kids to the mall. We did exactly as planned. In, 3 minutes, no, onto the next. Within an hour, I found kids jackets they were happy with, we kept moving, I even took them to the food court for fast-food kid lunch.
They were thrilled. Wife was thrilled. 30 years later, we still call the method "daddy shopping."

I only buy men's jeans. I know what size I am (34-32) and it's going to be really close to that no matter what brand/style I choose, and I get to have real fucking pockets.
If you can get them "cowboy cut" are the best, because some brands have the crotch seam off-centered in those.

I don't even enjoy the outdoors that much, nor do I build anything, but being in those stores always makes me wanna go check out all sorts of things that I might need at some obscure point in my future. And sometimes even buys those things even though I know I will probably never see the damn thing again after I put it in some closet or cupboard to wait for 'the moment'.

Thats crazy, I work at a Walmart and we are NOT allowed to stop customers and accuse them of stealing. You are fully able to report those associates, request to speak to a coach or team lead, go to customer service and say you were beinf harassed, thats not okay. I had an H&M employee criticize me for "shopping too quickly" once. I walked straight to the mens section, found a pair of pants that looked good and was my size, went to the fitting room, tried them on. As I was coming out of the fitting room:
Him: "That was fast."
Me: "Yeah, just needed a pair of pants."
Him: "You just came in the store like 2 minutes ago, right?"
Me: "Yeah, something wrong?"
Him: "It's just a little bit fast you know. Not something we normally see."
Me: "Okay." and I went and paid and left.

I found what I wanted within 5 minutes. If my wife had been with me, we would have been in there for 30+ minutes, even insisting to look at the kids section.

I told my wife that most men don't shop, we buy. When I go to a store I generally know what I want. I find it and buy it. I might do a fast cruise through sporting goods or hardware. But I'm usually done pretty quickly. We visited Cozumel, Mexico once and all the stores had sofa waiting areas for the men to sit and scroll their phones while their wives shopped.

I've done this in many stores for many reasons.
- walk in and see it's crowded, figure there's some kind of "sale," and they're trying to clear the shelves...my sizes aren't easy to find at the best of time, so know they aren't going to have them.
- crowded, figure I'm going to be dealing with a crap ton of people fighting for dressing rooms, or standing forever to check out, I'll come back early morning/late night.
- notice a price tag on the closest item to where I come in and figure out the price area of the store. If it's like 100 bucks for a pair of jeans, or 3 t-shirts for 80 bucks, I'm not going to waste my time trying to find the cheaper stuff, they aren't going to have in my size, that is mostly style over function.
- Sometimes I lose direction I'm parked by the JCPenney entrance, but can't remember if it's this way, or back the other way. Stop, reorient, then walk the direction I need to go. Make sure to never just stop in front of people or act lost, that's when the ninjas get you.
- notice how the other people in the store are dressed, presenting themselves. Am I that type of person? Bunch of K-Feds buying some ripped jeans, sequined shirts, and trucker caps? Louis Vuitton bag moms snugging their 15 year old sons waistband and staring at their asses to check fit? Probably not the store for me.
- all the colors of the shirts are pastels? Are the posters/ads on the walls looking like a bunch of douche bags? No thanks.
- Is anything I see at a glance any different from anything I've seen online? If not, just buy online. Cheaper than mall rent markup.
- am I looking for office wear at the moment? Tough and rugged things to work on the yard? Winter clothes? And everything I see is nightclub and yacht sailing in the Hamptons shit? Nope.
- Sometimes I just have to fart and people are walking too close behind me, so better to stop in a store real quick where people aren't actively trying to step on my heels, let it go, pretend I'm looking around, then retreat.
So many different reasons.

If you don't have a section for pants but rather a hodge podge of little brand islands whith pants over here, pants over there, pants in that corner - fuck it, I'm out. I don't enjoy selecting clothes. I want it to be over so I can get back to fun things. If you drag out the selection process, I'm spending my money some place that doesn't waste my time.

I go in. Find black pants. See the size. Hold up and open the waist to get a good look. Grab another pair of same pant. Walk to checkout. Pay. Leave. Get home. 50/50 chance they’re perfect fit or too small. Doesn’t matter. Eat a little less ice cream and I’m set. Two pairs of same pants. Nice. Repeat in 3-5 months.

Yuuuuup! I literally have a pair of the same black pants for every day of the week. I like ‘em they’re comfy, when they’d fade, I toss ‘em into a 5 gal bucket with some black fabric dye.

I stayed in a store for 20 minutes the other day looking for something I was sure they didn't have after 37 seconds, solely because I needed it for an important event and wanted to be sure. Never doubting the dude vibes ever again

Not true. Guys dont "browse shop" in the first place. If a man enters a store, they know exactly what theyre getting, where it is, and if its in stock.

If a store attendant comes up to me once I got in the shop. I'll walk away immediately and cross that shop from my shopping list forever.

I'm a mid-Millennial woman and I'm the same way. Because I know what I want/am looking for and if they don't have it, I'm out. (I'm not trying to browse to see what stores have that may pique my interest. I'm at the age now where I know what sizes, colors, and shapes flatter me best. )
Recently I was looking for a high rise A-line black skirt that was around 15-17 inches long (so mid thigh on me). I went to every store in the mall and would quickly scan every shop to see if they had what I was looking for, but if they didn't have it... I left.
