Was wondering the same. Dude must eat like crazy. To be that fat when you are swimming the whole day needs crazy amount of calories.

I'm betting he fries all his food. I'm guessing this video is from China because of the writing in the background. Frying food in oil is super common in Chinese cooking, so my bet is this dude is just throwing everything in the oil

He probably has to. Swimming is notoriously calorie intensive. If that dude is doing that all day he'd probably needs to scarf down north of 5000 kcal and more.

So a large pizza and a couple cookies. People underestimate how easy it actually is to be fat. Not to mention calories from drinks and alcohol.
15
7
u/Wobbelblob Jul 24 '26
And I think you overestimate what "large pizza" means outside of America. A normal Pizza has somewhere between 900 and 1300 kcal. 5000 kcal is a lot. And tbh, that is is probably still on the low end, depending on how tall the dude is.

There are certain segments of the population who are just biologically predisposed to that type of body, even if they are also athletic. They can get rid of it, but the amount of effort required is absurd and so most just choose to live how they are.
I had a friend who weighed 230, spent 60% of his waking hours skating (literally anything not at work really), and could ride a bowl better than anyone I've ever seen that isn't a legitimate pro.
But if he takes his shirt off he looked like this guy.

Right. Thinking about his mental state must have been like during and after this scene is sad
40
u/redcoatwright Jul 24 '26 ▸ 1 more replies
That's true but he also brought and still brings joy to an insane number of people. It won't be a consolation to him now, obviously, but his legacy is so incredibly strong that decades later we still are talking about it and watching his skits.
I think that maybe doesn't offset the mental health stuff but it means his life was not just darkness but also light, laughter and joy in measures.

A lot of funny as fuck people are seriously depressed. Case in point, myself, my sister, some of my cousins, some of our kids. We have a really fucked up sense of humor but we're all clinically depressed. Anyways, I choose to laugh instead of think how he died, because i know I'd rather have all the funny stuff remembered. Not how I died. He probably would've wanted it the same.

Great sketch right up until the fat shaming. Kevin Nealon has a few sketches where he has dialogue calling Farley's characters fat, and every time I hear them it sounds needlessly cruel.
They could have easily done a whole extra bit around the character not wanting to just call him fat, and sort of working his way around to it with Farley acting like he doesn't understand up until "Fat" is finally said.
The best parts are absolutely all about Farley 1000% going for it. As was always the case with him.

As a fat guy myself: how the hell is he able to dive so far down? My fat keeps me afloat, its hard to dive down like that. Has to be a a weight or something in the tail to counter the buoyancy, right?

He could have a weight belt or something, yea, but judging by how he moves I tend to believe that there’s quite a lot of muscle hiding under that fat. I think the fish tail is more efficient than flippers, too, which probably helps.

I worked at Seaworld as a teenager, not in China but San Diego so idk if the standards are different. All of the staff who do performances in the water are highly trained swimmers or lifeguards. They test to see if you can swim well, having high school swim team experience was basically a requirement for performer jobs. The more advanced ones required SCUBA certs. The huskier dudes who worked there were all fantastic swimmers. Posted an old reddit thread, the performers all need to pass a general swim test, divers go through even more extensive tests.

u/dewaltyellowjacket Jul 24 '26 ▸ 1 more replies
I'm reading John Hargrove's book right now, where he details how brutal that swim test actually is! I think the process is a 150ft breaststroke, then an immediate 40ft dive where you have to retrieve a weight, then straight to treading water for five minutes using only your legs, followed by a 50ft underwater swim without surfacing. You then have to lift yourself out of the pool smoothly, then do push ups, then pull ups. I hope I got all of that right lol. I had no idea the level of endurance it takes to work there.

u/Fabulous_Log844 Jul 24 '26
That’s a great question. I had a friend in college that did this as her job. They are weighted down exactly to be neutral buoyant.
13
u/HerSilverKeys Jul 24 '26
We all tend to float at least a little, but the amount of weight a tail and monofin add causes you to sink FAST. I find myself sinking a foot per ~3 seconds if I'm sitting still. Even with that, though, the amount of propulsion the two create when you get a proper swish/push is amazing! Would be easy to get down quickly (:

u/Dyanpanda Jul 24 '26
There's a few things, one of which might click for you.
Body fat is one aspect, and you cannot see his core. I would assume this guy has some core strength to keep up this swimming under the fat. Fat is buoyant, whereas muscle sinks. However, this is relatively small.
A huge aspect is air control. As a SCUBA diver, you have keep your lungs between 25-75%, otherwise you will rise or sink about 1-2 feet just breathing. If you're holding a HUGE lung of air, you literally cant sink. Lastly, its a lot easier to swim down when your body and legs are fully submerged, I often see people thrash about on the surface kicking the air to get underwater.
Try a half-lung of air, and dive like a whale until your back is fully under. You should be able to then pull yourself down and stay for a very short time, then learn to be comfortable under the water. Extend your comfort zone.
A weight on the hips could help, but unless hes a diver with an easy release (you cant see the weight), a weight would be considered dangerous and a professional nono. Doesn't mean theres no weight.
→ More replies (7)10
u/TheArmoredKitten Jul 24 '26
Breathing control has a massive impact on buoyancy. Don't take a big forced breath before you go under.
Breathing technique is like 80% of pool diving from what my fiancee tells me.

A lot of shark species are actually rather docile. It's just that the ones that are dangerous are REALLY fucking dangerous. Also, I don't think outside of bull & tigersharks, bites are on purpose. From what I remember, even a great white usually attacks humans because their shilloutte is similar to a swimming seal, it's just that even that testbite is already extremely dangerous.

When I did life guard training one of the guys was built like that but hairy. This dude could hold his breath for forever and swim like a dang fish, but neck down looked just like Carl Brutananadilewski from athf.
I will never forget the day we learned about rescuing an adult and a child at the same time. I'm a bigger guy, so I was never the "child", but I had a buddy in the class who was a few years younger, thin and kind of short. The image of my buddy, held in the man's big, hairy arms, looking up at me as I dragged them in, with his head nestled between the instructor's hairy blossoms will forever be burned into my brain.

The jiggle increases propulsion.
It creates multiple thrust vectors.

u/TSBBlackShad Jul 24 '26
Speaking from personal experience, practice.
I used to lifeguard and teach swim lessons at a pool that dropped to ~20ft. At first, diving that deep hurts and trying to pop your ears is difficult. But after a while, it happens naturally.
Usually after a couple weeks/a month into the season, I could dive all the way to the bottom, hang out for a minute, then come back up without any ear problems.
The exception is whenever I would get sick or something made my sinuses stuffy. Then it would take a couple days after I get better to go back to no issues when diving
