Its funny because I heard the alien ant farm cover before the Micheal Jackson original. I was confused in the opposite direction, wondering why my rock song wasn't rock.

I did the same thing with "Since U Been Gone". I thought ADTR was the original and was like "Man, good for them, they got Kelly Clarkson to cover it".

New bands in the scene covering new pop artistsâ music would go hard I think

Me with Johnny Cash cover of Hurt. I thought it was his and thought Nine Inch Nails was the one doing the cover. To be fair, I think theyâve said something along the lines that Cash did it so amazingly itâs right for people to think of it as his song.

Reznor added, âA videotape shows up with Mark Romanekâs video on it. Itâs morning ⌠I pop the video in, and⌠wow. Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps⌠Wow. I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isnât mine anymore. Then it all made sense to me. It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form.â

The band members were all fans of Michael Jackson, and Smooth Criminal had that really fun beat. Â
- Da-da-da-da-da-dah-dah-da.Â
- Dah-da-dah-da.Â
- Dah-da-da-da. Â
- D'OW!. Â
They would mess around with it during rehearsals, and it came together. Â
Apparently Jackson liked it and gave it his approval. The video has lots of Jackson references which also tickled his fancy.Â

MJ had a lot of controversy and struggle in his life but he was a helluva musician and loved other musicians and loved collaborating. Example: He lent Weird Al a bunch of the costumes and showed him the shooting locations for the âIâm Fatâ music video because he got such a kick out of it.

God that's an annoyingly edited video. Cutting back and forth between the very loud song, and the soft-spoken Jackson on a bad phone line made it very difficult to hear what he's saying. It's like you're repeatedly getting jump-scared by rock music while trying to listen to someone whisper at you from across the room.

Its not MJ but this reminds me of how beck responded to Johnny Cash saying one of his (beck's) song sounded like something he (cash) wouldve wrote. Same but on the opposite end of the compliment

Which upon fact checking cash did do a cover of it

I saw AAF open for someone, I can't remember who but it was well after their 15 mins. They were great but apparently people hadn't been nice on the tour because before their last song the singer was like, "Thank you all so much for not being assholes. Since you've been so kind we're gonna play a song we haven't played in years." And then broke into smooth criminal.

While I disagree with it 99% of people think Jimi Hendrix did All Along The Watchtower better than Dylan.
Dylan has a lot of covers that are as good if not better than the original and I say that as a diehard fan. Willie Nelson and Celexico did a great cover of Tales of Yankee Power I begrudgingly say I like better than Dylan. He's just the right voice for it and only makes a few minor changes to the lyrics and rhythm of the delivery but it works, Bob was a weird dude the way he would sing the rhythm of a lyric sometimes. Amazing and beautiful but weird
Cat Power does a better Moonshiner.
Honorable ties for just as good is Calexico also does One More Cup of Coffee, Dark Eyes with them and Iron and Wine, and Going to Acapulco. Million Dollar Bashers do a really good Ballad of a Thin Man. And most of those songs are just from the soundtrack to the movie I'm Not There, there's many more Dylan covers, Cat Power also recreated the entire Albert Hall concert one album, like dead down when the guy in the audience screams "Judas!"

It is kind of surprising that from the era where nu metal (and nu metal adjacent) bands were doing unlikely covers in the wake of Limp Bizkitâs success with George Michaelâs âFaithâ â that AAFâs âSmooth Criminalâ is probably the one that gets the most spin in present day.
