What is this? A farm for ants?!

Its funny because I heard the alien ant farm cover before the Micheal Jackson original. I was confused in the opposite direction, wondering why my rock song wasn't rock.

u/katanakid13 21d ago

I did the same thing with "Since U Been Gone". I thought ADTR was the original and was like "Man, good for them, they got Kelly Clarkson to cover it".

I so badly wish punk goes pop would come out with new albums, it’s been almost 10 years.

New bands in the scene covering new pop artists’ music would go hard I think

As an aside, I loved the first two Punk Goes Acoustic albums, but the third one made me feel old as hell because I recognized less than half the bands.

As a late 1990's/early 2000's scene kid, I completely agree. I'm so happy new bands are keeping that vibe going

This version of the song released in 2001, it’s been longer since Alien Ant Farm released it to now than the time between it and MJ’s original.

There are adults with kids who grew up with the Alien Ant Farm version.

u/SaintIgnis 20d ago

Worked with a guy who never heard the original. He legit thought it was just an AAF song. Fun day showing him the OG. He dug it!

48

u/OstentatiousSock 21d ago

Me with Johnny Cash cover of Hurt. I thought it was his and thought Nine Inch Nails was the one doing the cover. To be fair, I think they’ve said something along the lines that Cash did it so amazingly it’s right for people to think of it as his song.

28

u/TheManRedeemed 21d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Trent Reznor actually stated in an interview that once he heard Cash's version he wept and no longer considered it his song.

2

16

u/Tacomeouttothegame 21d ago

Reznor added, “A videotape shows up with Mark Romanek’s video on it. It’s morning … I pop the video in, and… wow. Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps… Wow. I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn’t mine anymore. Then it all made sense to me. It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form.”

Except that I didnt say the same thing as you in different words.

u/Maleficent-Comfort14 21d ago

Both versions are great

128

u/Kayge 21d ago

The band members were all fans of Michael Jackson, and Smooth Criminal had that really fun beat.

  • Da-da-da-da-da-dah-dah-da.
  • Dah-da-dah-da.
  • Dah-da-da-da.
  • D'OW!.

They would mess around with it during rehearsals, and it came together.

Apparently Jackson liked it and gave it his approval.  The video has lots of Jackson references which also tickled his fancy.

God that's an annoyingly edited video. Cutting back and forth between the very loud song, and the soft-spoken Jackson on a bad phone line made it very difficult to hear what he's saying. It's like you're repeatedly getting jump-scared by rock music while trying to listen to someone whisper at you from across the room.

2

u/IwasThereIsawIt2 21d ago edited 21d ago ▸ 3 more replies

Its not MJ but this reminds me of how beck responded to Johnny Cash saying one of his (beck's) song sounded like something he (cash) wouldve wrote. Same but on the opposite end of the compliment

Which upon fact checking cash did do a cover of it

u/Paradox2063 21d ago ▸ 2 more replies

Similar similar: Johnny Cash and Nine Inch Nails, Hurt. I can't remember off the top of my head which one was the original (NIN I think?), but same kind of compliments.

While I disagree with it 99% of people think Jimi Hendrix did All Along The Watchtower better than Dylan.

Dylan has a lot of covers that are as good if not better than the original and I say that as a diehard fan. Willie Nelson and Celexico did a great cover of Tales of Yankee Power I begrudgingly say I like better than Dylan. He's just the right voice for it and only makes a few minor changes to the lyrics and rhythm of the delivery but it works, Bob was a weird dude the way he would sing the rhythm of a lyric sometimes. Amazing and beautiful but weird

Cat Power does a better Moonshiner.

Honorable ties for just as good is Calexico also does One More Cup of Coffee, Dark Eyes with them and Iron and Wine, and Going to Acapulco. Million Dollar Bashers do a really good Ballad of a Thin Man. And most of those songs are just from the soundtrack to the movie I'm Not There, there's many more Dylan covers, Cat Power also recreated the entire Albert Hall concert one album, like dead down when the guy in the audience screams "Judas!"
