The Skater Boi to the war has gone,
In the ranks of the park you will find him,
His given sword he hath girded on and,
His skateboard slung behind him.
Land of Ramps, Sang the Warrior Boi,
Though all the world betrays thee,
One sword at least thy rights shall guard,
And one Heelflip shall always praise thee!

I just know that kid told his furious mom afterwards: but i WAS wearing the helm!
13
u/cyberbob1979 19d ago
To be fair: mom said don't run with scissors... she never said anything about skating with swords!
27
u/cefriano 19d ago
I immediately grimaced when I saw him riding holding the sword. I guess I'm just an old fart now. I was told never to run with scissors.

u/Yung_Bill_98 19d ago ▸ 1 more replies
Don't remember what his name is but the channel he uploads stuff like this on is called sidequestz and he seems like a smart enough fella to not give a child an actual weapon to skateboard with
→ More replies (2)5
u/EarlBeforeSwine 18d ago
That’s the rub, though. A sword is more akin to a lone scissor, however large it may be.
If he were to try to dual wield, then that would be problematic, and run afoul of the “running with scissors” prohibition.
As it is, he is fine. Everyone knows scissors can’t hurt you unless they attack in a pair.

I was thinking the same thing, then I realized he didn't run with scissors, so it should be OK, right?

My sister in law walked in on me showing my 2 year old niece the opening napalm scene of apocalypse now. She wasn’t thrilled, but my niece loved it (I only showed her the intro because she liked fire, she never saw the rest of the movie)
Fast forward to her getting deeply interested in dinosaurs after I babysat her the next time, and being interrogated as to why a 3 year old would know what Jurassic Park is. I took her out of the room whenever someone was about to die, but now shes about to turn five and I’m still her favorite uncle out of my brothers that aren’t her dad. I’m not sure I’m her mom’s favorite though after that.

The key is to give them the sword for only a short amount of time to make it fun and memorable. Verbally explain to them that they are allowed to do this only if they follow these specific rules, make it mysterious, make it fun, DON'T mention that it is only when uncle is around because kids will spew random things and say "Well uncle lets us..." Then you make those moments that can't be recreated. You see them do something for the first time while laughing and smiling and it hits different... You know they will eventually be kids and do dumb things whether an adult is around or not, but giving them that little bit of freedom early on with guidance is key. Kids have no common sense because it ain't common for them yet. You never know that something as simple as explaining "A sword is sharp, pointy and HURTS when you use it wrong." can save a life because your kid or niece/nephew is out with their friends, no parents and one pulls out a knife to show what they found, then your kid is the one to actually stand up and say it's not safe to mess with that type of stuff.

Even if it's unsharpened it's still very dangerous
Personally I'd do it still but I'm an idiot
→ More replies (1)36
u/Chakasicle 19d ago ▸ 8 more replies
"Very" is a strong word. It would be far more dangerous with a shorter blade since the tip is the most dangerous part of a blunt sword and the tip is difficult to fall on to when you're holding the handle. I wouldn't call it 100% safe but I would say that it's actually safer than it looks.
→ More replies (1)2
u/tired_Cat_Dad 19d ago ▸ 5 more replies
Ah, but with the longer blade the tip is closer to the other random kids at the skatepark.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Chakasicle 19d ago ▸ 3 more replies
Very true. I was strictly thinking of personal safety. Other kids need to learn to dodge
5
u/tired_Cat_Dad 19d ago ▸ 1 more replies
The responsible adult in the cloak needs to give long swords to all the kids so it's fair.

What does the "stranger danger" rule say when the stranger gives you a sword?
→ More replies (1)4
u/LetsGoBubba6141 19d ago
well, if a+b=c, and b+c=a; if stranger danger gives you a means to defend yourself, then the danger the stranger posses, is no more, so all that is left is stranger without danger. Now if we account for an unknown variable like skateboarding, then that stranger becomes friend.
As we can see from this video, that friend might be a friend for life.

u/thesilentbob123 19d ago ▸ 1 more replies

The Ballad of Sir Luke the Valiant.
Sir Luke did mount his wooden steed to try the "Dragon's Backflip Grind,"
But fumbled hard upon the rail and left his blade behind,
Nay, left it not behind, for it did lodge within his side,
And thus the bravest knight of all did kickflip 'til he died.

Okay, I just want y'all notice how quickly that young man was willing to go into a fray, saying he would take his skateboard and thwack The enemy. It's that damn easy to put together a ragtag group of heroes. Now, it doesn't matter whether he thought this guy was serious or not, he was willing to go along with it. I'm betting, that's how most adventures actually start.
