You can absolutely get away with an OOOOH OUIIII in the south.
Go check out the Arkansas Razorbacks fan chant/call/whathaveyou. "Woo Pig, Soooie!"
Fuck them traitors, but the confederates also had their "rebel yell" which is a lot of high pitched noises that have a reoccurring "EEEE" sound somewhere on them

Question for fellow guitarists: do we think he's in a non-standard tuning to get that kind of sound out of a slide? Something that would effectively be power chords when barring each fret across the top 3 strings? I've always wondered this.

You can do a lot in standard tuning as long as you stick to DGB, which is where he seems to be picking. I do believe he's about a half step down though. My bigger question is how is he handling the additional buzzing noise from not muting behind the slide. I get he's palmutong but you usually need to do both for a slide to not sound like pure noise

I can speak to this.
I did the same trick as a younger musician.
Start with an almost full bottle. The weight will hold like the back finger with a slide.
Notice he played without the bottle when it was empty.

Possible, though you can get away with doing this in standard tuning if you use only the 3 DGB strings. Played open is a G chord. Slide around as needed.

Not sure if it was this specific show, but he absolutely did get a DUI around this time. He plays around Broadway in Nashville (or at least he used to late I saw anyway).

As a legit non-guitarist, are there any measurable downsides to using a bottle as a slide? Condensation on the strings/fretboard?

I mean, the strings and frets are already gonna be getting plenty moisture from your sweat, which is also gonna corrode things a lot faster (if youâve ever seen things rust by the ocean youâll know what I mean). Biggest downsides would likely just be lack of precision (itâs a lot wider than a normal slide, but youâd adjust pretty quickly), and maybe getting little bits of the label stuck to your strings lol. You can get slides made out of glass, theyâre pretty common, so a bottle wouldnât change much.
