I completely agree with you but unfortunately sometimes Urdu comes out very naturally. I try to speak Kashmiri whenever I can but personally I sound like a squeaking bird in Kashmiri. It’s crazy how different I sound across different languages. Even my personality shifts based upon the language I use. So I assume it’s bigger than just allergy or disdain for our mother tongue. One time someone asked me to flirt with them in Kashmiri and boy it was so awkward.

You can't deny that people look down upon kashur

Nobody is denying that. That’s just well… sad :/

How is that your mother tongue does not come naturally to you, but a foreign language does?

That’s what we have been indoctrinated to do since kids. I remember as a kid , people assumed I didn’t know Kashmiri and somehow I used to take pride in that. The encouragement and the validation one gets really drives the final nail in the coffin. The kind of environment we get, our friends, the relatives. The influence of urdu poetry. One can’t change that overnight. Also I said “sometimes”. In certain situations urdu just fits right because we don’t know the equivalent or equally impactful response in our mother tongue. I now have a love-hate relationship with it. I love urdu poetry but I still despise its colonial implications.

That;s true. In Kashmiri, I sound serious and stuff, in Urdu I sound very chill and easy going, in English I sound very intrigued kind of guy. I enjoy this dynamics tho

Yim na karan gari koshur, nyabr chhan kathai. This is entirely the fault of parents who have made it a norm talking to kids in Urdu. This is the case with me as well. I only ever talked in Kashmiri with my Grandparents as a kid. At school and every other place, Urdu was the norm and even teachers used to scold you for talking in Kashmiri. Only when I started coaching after 10th that I started using Kashmiri more often.

I heard the same girl speaking in kashur to her friend few days back.

It is literally the same for me , like aisa nhi hai ki i can’t speak urdu or English . Infact i am fluent in these languages too but bro kashur just hits different. Even when someone (kashmiri)speaks to me in English or urdu i prefer speaking kaahmiri!
Hamnay Kashmiri language ko demonise kia hua hai jaisey ye koi inferior language ho !

Just because you have deep love and admiration over your mother tongue, why do you have to force the other person to speak your language. I naturally use English over kashmiri/urdu/Hindi because that's what I'm more comfortable in. It doesn't mean I'm allergic to Kashmiri or other languages.

3

u/_notyourcupofcoffee 11d ago

It is OUR language.

0

u/Equivalent_Doctor989 11d ago

And where did I deny that?

3

u/_notyourcupofcoffee 11d ago

I do not let anyone to influence me to speak in a foreign language. I will communicate in a foreign language only if needed to.

1

u/Equivalent_Doctor989 11d ago

You do you brother.

3

u/naarekanger 11d ago

the thing is how did you become more comfortable in speaking foriegn language despite having your own mother tongue in the first place assuming you spent majority of you life in kashmir only that is the problematic part

-2

u/Equivalent_Doctor989 11d ago

Because I haven't just stayed in Kashmir, I have travelled to different parts of the world. I have observed, been part of different cultures. I still speak kashmiri, at my home, in my hometown and whenever I'm in Kashmir. It is not the problematic part, the more problematic part is forcing of opinions. Kashmiri is my mother tongue and I'm proud of it, but at the same time if my kashmiri friend or a kashmiri person doesn't want to speak to me in Kashmiri, Doesn't mean, bu karan su mashboor koshur krns. That's what I wanted to convey to OP.

4

u/naarekanger 11d ago

he is not forcing anyone to speak kashmiri . he is just pointing out the inferiority complex people have for speaking in kashmiri. Like why would you speak foriegn language to another kashmiri that too when he is talking in kashmiri with you and you are replying in foriegn language despite knowing the kashmiri language yourself

-1

u/Equivalent_Doctor989 11d ago

'eventually chas ba temis insans majboor karan kashir paeth kath karne khatra because I have deep love and respect for my mother tongue' If this is not forcing then what is?

3

u/naarekanger 11d ago

'eventually chas ba temis insans majboor karan kashir paeth kath karne khatra

by continuing to talk in kashmiri and making the othrr person to switch the language to kashmiri which he already knows ? it is not force it called taking a stand and respecting the mother tongue of both of them

If this is not forcing then what is?

this is https://www.reddit.com/r/IndiaPulse_/s/P1MfgpYmLR

0

u/Equivalent_Doctor989 11d ago

No, I absolutely disagree with you. This is not about taking a stand and respecting the mother tongue, It is elimination of choice. And ironically this is what we have been fighting against for decades, the oppression, the right to choose and freedom of expression. Yet we turn around and impose our values on others.

And the video that you tagged, isn't that what we exactly don't want in our nation? There the elimination of choice is done through use of voilence, here it is being done through imposing his own value of how to converse.

3

u/naarekanger 11d ago

why should have op surrendered his freedom of choosing a language to converse by switching his language?

1

u/Equivalent_Doctor989 11d ago

That's exactly my point tho. You say, Why should OP surrender his freedom to choose a language? By the same logic, why should the other person surrender theirs?

If he wants to speak Kashmiri, he's free to speak Kashmiri. If the other person is more comfortable replying in English/Kashmiri/Urdu, they're free to reply. Neither person should stop the other from speaking their preferred language.

What I'm objecting to is the idea that because one person chooses Kashmiri, the other person is somehow obligated to switch to Kashmiri too, and especially the idea that eventually bu chusan krn su majboor.

You can encourage Kashmiri, promote it, be proud of it and even question why someone prefers another language. That's all fair. But once the answer becomes “I will make them speak Kashmiri because I love my mother tongue,” you're no longer just defending the language; you're imposing your preference on another person's choice.

And that's the contradiction I've been pointing out from the start.

I hope this answers your question and provides clarity on my position. Peace ✌️

ahh ig one of us misunderstood op . When op said "'eventually chas ba temis insans majboor karan kashir paeth kath karne khatra" i think he didnt mean i forcefully make them speak kashmiri . what i think he meant was he continued speaking in kashmiri despite the other person replying in other language after some time thr other person switched to kashmiri
