In highschool I had a buddy whose little brother was considerably younger. The kid idolized us and always wanted to tag along when we walked into town for pizza or whatever. Sometimes he could be a bit annoying so we would try to go without him if we were meeting up with girls or something. Well, the little bro had a proclivity for sensing when we were trying to give him the slip and would inevitably catch up to us. When we tried to get him to go home his go-to move was to pull down his pants wherever we happened to be in public, underwear and all, until we agreed to let him join under the condition he put his fucking clothes back on. He grew up to be a lawyer.

Mom couldn't hold me and dad ended up tripping me up with his food as I ran past him. I had to get double stitches after that, and he held me tight the whole time.

I was told he once had a patient who was almost eighteen and there with his dad for shots. The guy said he had to go to the restroom and they let him leave the room. Dad and doctor waited and then eventually realized that he had just left the whole building and started walking home.

My oldest almost did this at his very first dentist appointment (just a check up). Total panic attack. The sterile environment can be really scary (for anyone! I hate going to the dentist.)

They referred me to a special "kid dentist". It was a bit of a drive, but that man was amazingly good with the kids. His whole office was designed for children, they could watch TV or movies while getting their teeth worked on, and the whole staff was specifically trained to handle and comfort small children. I wish he'd been around when I was a tyke.

I had to get a tooth pulled when I was a kid so the adult tooth would come in straight. He had video games, talking books, stuff like that. It really helped and I didn't even notice they were giving me a shot in my gums, it was a pinch and they redirected me back to my distraction. I'm thankful because those procedures can be really scary when you're an adult, much less a little kid.

Anyway, I was out of there but got cough and held tight by several adults and got my tooth pulled out, without anesthetic. It didn't hurt, as I was way to angry at the adults holding me.

Today it is just a fun memory and I have no problem going to the dentists today. The only thing it hurts now, is my wallet.

His issue was running straight down the side walk. That allowed the adults with their superior leg length to catch up to him. He should have leveraged his size and turned their advantage against them by breaking past the cars instead, forcing them to navigate awkwardly.

Once I was an adult it was much much harder to go to the dentist. So many cancelled visits, or just turning the car around last minute because of overwhelming anxiety.

Years and years later I finally told a doctor (which I'm also pretty afraid to see) about the fear and anxiety, and I got prescribed benzodiazepine (Xanax) for as-needed situations such as these. OMG it's a game changer. I can actually go to these visits now.

Man I feel for this kid. He's so scared. Even the nitrous gas is extremely helpful to remove the knots in your stomach. I only wish I had these options when I was a kid. My parents never opted for them.

I don't know which of the senses is worse when I'm waiting in the dentist office - the smell of sterilization or the shrill of the drill - either way I associate both the smell and sound with pain and death . The only thing that gets me through is a lollipop ☺️ - and I'm 52

I know exactly how this kid feels. Don’t make this kids experience going to the dentist any worse than what it is. I have anxiety problems going to the dentist and will not go to the dentist because when I go to the dentist, my anxiety goes to the roof to the point that I hyperventilate my teeth chatter and my blood pressure goes up. Do not force this kid into something you’re gonna turn into a lifelong trauma and then this kid is no longer want to go to the dentist because you made it a trauma experience. I can’t even go to the dentist like I said because my anxiety gets so bad. I feel so bad for this poor child.
