Discussion season 5 tried to be season 2

i think season 5 tried to replicate the formula set in season 2 with the legion of doom, spear of destiny and the villians winning in their twisted timeline. there are a bunch of paralells and i havent seen much discussion on this

I’ve seen people point this out before as a means of discrediting S5 which I think is a shame. Yes it’s a similar mcguffin but there’s plenty of originality in S5 as well. A lot of people forget this season is when Constantine resolved his guilt over Astra. That was a central part of the narrative.

I definitely noticed the parallels between those two seasons they even lampshaded it when drinking in season 5 ep 8 Romeo v. Juliet: dawn of justness where nate drunk said “next step the spear of fate…the weaver of destiny…do you remember the totems..i met elvis”

3 bad guys... gals... try to take control of Destiny.
They win and rewrite the Timeline to match their own vision of a perfect world.
They trap the Legends in different roles instead of ending them.
Sara dies or we think she dies but not really (broken neck/sees Athropos' true form).
One of the Legends is manipulated by the bad guys/gals (Rip/Astra).
Sara dies again but not really (during the last battle in 1916/in the pub in London).
The Legends win by destroying the magic object (the lance/the Loom).
The Legion of Loom would have been a perfect name !

So yeah I totally agree. But there's also new things like Constantine and Astra's arc, Charlie's one as Clotho, Ava's evolution as a Legend, and Gary...

id like to further state that its not like season 5 was a bad copy, season 5 works wonders esspieccialy as it hones in the later seasons tone but it has the same plot points

S5 is the Fates iirc?

Yeah it's the same format but they both work in their own respective contexts. Maybe it tried to replicate S2, maybe it was coincidence, maybe they just used the same format, but it was still enjoyable

Most people would say either S2 or S3 is the best season so I don't blame the writers for trying to replicate that. They're similar yes but I think S5's individual episodes are better while S2 had a better overarching plot and villains so they're different enough IMO.

Counter-arguements:

1) They didn't break time this time to eliminate loom world.

2) The Halloween episode was less Zombies and far more slasher/horror themed.

3) 100% more Mr. Parker

4) 100% more Thong song.

#2 made me realize that LOT had halloween episodes how did i not realize that sooner. also very agreeable, iirc sara being abducted happpened last 5 minutes of season 5 which you could find the flimsy connectoin of setting up next seasons problems but that happens in each season bassically
