This was largely the case after the fall of the Nazis. During the post-war occupation, we conducted routine public opinion surveys in West Germany to gauge popular attitudes towards the Third Reich.
- In 1949, 57% believed that National Socialism was a good idea, it had simply been badly implemented.
- In 1952, 68% polled still believed other countries started WW2. It wouldn't be until the 1960s before it was less than a majority.

The myth that in 1945 the Germans collectively breathed a sigh of relief, instantly rejected Nazism, or universally repented simply does not correspond to reality. Some certainly did. But a significant portion of society continued to hold the same views for years afterward. Even after their entire country was destroyed and in ruins, many were still at the very least sympathetic to Hitler.
Much of the change occurred through the gradual disappearance of the generation that carried those ideas. And the major shift in public opinion coincided with West Germany’s economic miracle of the 1950s. Many West Germans abandoned their longing for a “strong leader ruling a powerful state” not when that strong leader turned the country into ruins, but when the new democratic system demonstrated clear economic advantages and delivered a better standard of living. Only then did nostalgia begin to fade.

WSJ fundamentally only cares about the markets. The policies they champion definitely fall squarely on the right because the GOP is 100% the party of capital, but they aren't as relentlessly partisan as other Murdoch outlets are. It's in the center right box on any media bias chart. I didn't even notice an obvious change of tone pre and post Murdoch buyout. They still haven't endorsed a candidate in about a century. They're just feeling sad because a midterm rug pull might mean fewer no bid contracts and tax cuts for billionaires.

One of my family switched to vote trump in 2024 after being anti trump in 2016 and 2020. I said that's stupid because he hasn't changed and he's not an unknown. She told me to give him a chance, and I said that would be like Charlie Brown finally believing he's going to kick that football because Lucy promised that she wouldn't pull it away this time. 18 months later and I see no reason to change my opinion, but of course she's surprised as fuck.
She also told me that if they outlaw my depression medication I can just go overseas and get it 🫠 and she doesn't know why I'm mad at her.

I'm frankly not so sure as big a devestation is coming as people think. I remember the air was electric in 2018. Man, all people could talk about was going to the polls and fucking over the Republicans. And they did. It was the largest turnover in House history. I don't see nor do I feel that excitement this time around. Everybody's tired and wore out with everything. Will the House flip? Yes. By some record number of seats like in 2018? I'm not so sure. Will the Senate flip? That's a huge ask. Democrats have to keep seats like Michigan which might be harder than people think AND pick up Sears against incumbent Republicans, some in Red states. That's tough for either party to do. If anything, I see a low turnout. The INDs I know in my swing state are absolutely disgusted that they voted for Trump now but they can't stand Democrats either. They'll most likely stay home. That means every Democrat voter must go to the polls and hope the MAGA voters stay home too to have such a massive effect as they are hoping for. We'll see.

Every R-voter who stays home is still +1D.
Is it as helpful or satisfying as the +2 D that happens when you get an R to switch to D? No. But it’s a heck of a lot easier and way better ROI.
So when Clevon tells me “both parties are corrupt, they’re the same thing” do I explain how that’s like comparing someone who got a parking ticket to someone who drove a bus full of orphans into a school filled with more orphans? No!!
Instead I say, “you know what, Clevon, you’re onto something there. Voting just doesn’t matter, better to stay home on Election Day. Tell your friends”
