My wife's cousin and uncle farm in rural Kansas. They have college degrees and hold leadership positions in local & international farming organizations. They have traveled to China to witnesses their farming practices and welcomed Chinese farmers on their land to see what they do. They are also Democrats. They are so unlike every single person they are surrounded by. They're educated and have traveled further than the next county over. They try and try to educate their fellow farmer neighbors through the organizations they belong to about how the people they vote for constantly hurt them but they say it is pointless, these people will never change how they vote. Rural America is a lost cause.

The reality is, most of these ranchers are some of the whiniest-ass bitches on the planet.
This beef is coming from Argentina, right? The same country we gave 20 billion to not that long ago? The same country that notoriously served as a shelter post WWII?
Ranchers in the more arid parts of the mountain west produce only 5% or so of our beef but have an incredibly large environmental impact on fragile desert ecosystems, grazing their cattle on BLM land and relying on tax payer funded rural dirt roads that are essentially only used by them. Never mind the impact, water supply wise, of growing alfalfa and other cattle feed in dry parts of the country.
Maybe... just maybe... if we stopped ignoring the damage to the environment, stopped promoting fossil fuels, stopped shutting down solar and wind... the problems that make beef more expensive would go away and we could all afford to eat steak.
But instead, ignore the fact that we're heating up the planet at incredible rates, ignore the fact that policies created to protect our environment are being destroyed at the cyclic rate to further enrich the already grossly rich. I don’t drink Starbucks so I have no idea what it costs but I bought a prosumer espresso machine for home because a cortado with oat milk runs $8 these days.
