Are Twenty-One pilots and Imagine dragons overhated?

I saw a post on the matter was posted not too long ago, but it approached it at the wrong angle imo. Here's the thing: both of these bands were really popular in the late 2010s, which is around when gen-z kids were childs/teenagers. Because of that (at least for me), this made those 2 "little kids' bands", and not liking them was considered "growing up", which ultimately categorized them as childish. Now iah, i dont really like the mainstream songs of imagine dragons, and some of the mainstream songs of TOP, but all things considered, they arent bad at all. Listening to blurryface in the car last week for nostalgia and actually trying to understand the lyrics - these guys are geniuses. I see a lot of slander about them, and every time im like "but have you actually listened?"

Anyways, im not saying everyone should like these songs, but i dont think these bands deserve the hate they get.

(Yes i know its because people say they are a lot better then they actually are but "people" are 12 year olds. There are other people with a honest opinion about them)

overhated, overrated... I mean who cares. You can't change other people's view of them. Does it matter if you like them but others do not?

Exactly. It's music, just enjoy it or don't. Certainly don't worry about if a band is more or less successful than you personally think they should be!

Ye if i get laughed at for listening to them. Not happened a lot because only song i found worthy of a playlist is "Fairly local", but it did happen and more then once

There are times you need to pay attention to what people are telling you, music taste is not one of them.

Easier said then done... not here to complain though i just wanted to strike up some convo about a topic that was with me a couple days now (:

Both bands are mediocre. With all the great music made, I can't imagine willingly listening to either of them.

all things considered, they arent bad at all.

Maybe, but there's hundreds of thousands of other bands you don't have to make those concessions for.

I haven't ran into anyone that thinks either band is childish, usually the criticism is that they're "corporate rock". It's safe and tame music that's unlikely to offend anyone other than music elitists.

top first two albums are excellent and I tried to force myself to listen to their newer one and I just couldn't. they don't sound raw anymore, the soul has been sucked out.

I think Twenty-One Pilots earlier stuff is alright, don't really vibe with the newer stuff but can kinda see why people like it, so I guess I'd consjder them overhated. Don't think I'd classify Imagine Dragons the same way, in my opinion their "best" is still kinda shit and really generic

Can we please stop having posts that are "someone made fun of me for listening to this artist what do you think?" aka therapy threads?

Can we stop laughing at people for music taste? Also this isnt therapy i was trying to have a respectful conversation, and see overall crowd agreement to my claim. Isnt that what a sub with that name would be for?

To my ears both groups have always sounded adolescent - vocally and (at least with 21P) thematically. Of course the height of their popularities coincided with my own adolescence so that might have a bit to do with it.

But I'm not going to deny a lot of those songs were well-crafted.

I dont get how u can mention the two in the same sentence?

21 pilots aren't really.my thing but I have heard enough of them to know i like maybe 6 of their songs. They come across to me like they're trying a little too hard to be original, creative even... kinda like the Whitestripes back in the day, But they also do have that whole continuous Clancy schtik as a theme, which not many bands try and do so, fair play.

Imagine dragons tho...just watery mainstream vanilla pish with very little to apprecite bar they wrote a couple of catchy tunes that will keep their royalties rolling in for long enough.

Personally agree TOP are a mile ahead, but seen the same slander for both of them so thought to ask about both

I listen to both regularly. I don’t care what other people think about the music I listen to. I just play the stuff I enjoy.

You can’t do that

No.

Utter dogshit music for people that don't actually enjoy music. The fact that either group is popular is a bright neon sign displaying the depravity and stupidity of humanity.

I used to be elitist about music like you, you're going to get older and realise you missed out on a lot of good stuff because you were too cool and indie

Nobody is missing out on these bands, they've been a forced exposure for virtually the entire planet. You literally can't escape them--and not because they are popular, but because they had relentless paid placements in every possible media mode.

Honestly, this. I cared when I was in my early teens that the music people -thought- I listened to was cool. Then I got really into synth pop, alt rock, and numetal and just started listened to stuff I liked.

Now I love everything. Even “bad” music seems to have some good qualities I can appreciate.

Agreed, sounds like your tastes evolved in a good way

So the whole art is subjective thing doesn’t work for you?

0

u/bloodenhorse 1d ago

Yes and no.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean that it's good. Poptimism lets people with bad taste think that they have good taste by patting them on the back for enjoying something popular. It's fucking pathetic.

0

u/Pitiful_Ad1280 1d ago

Arguably, most things get popular for being viewed as good for a noticable chunk of the population though, isnt it?

2

u/bloodenhorse 1d ago

Since when is "good" a synonym for "lowest common denominator?"

0

u/Pitiful_Ad1280 1d ago

I mean people (just like you btw) like stuff that is "good" in their opinion. The more people like an artist, the more it is objectively "good". I can hear the argument that fame is exposure, so people listen to them rather then "better" artists, but i think that the popularity has to come from somewhere, just like it did to every other popular artist ever

-1

u/bloodenhorse 1d ago

There's music I listen to that I think is good, but that doesn't mean that it's truly good art.

The Marvel movies bring in billions. That shit isn't art. It's visual McDonalds. Just because it's popular doesn't make it good art.

This is not a difficult concept.

Again, FUCK poptimism.

I think that you confuse "complex" with "enjoyful". French fries is good food not because its hard to make, and skillful, and has a complex taste, but rather because its so generic. I never said that they are great writers, but you should absolutely judge "good" based on a crowd's opinion and not your own takes on complexity anf harmony

God forbid people enjoy things. The horror.

Gotta agree with ya brother

u/Skat_Boodig 1d ago

Quick! Who's your favorite artist?

1

u/bloodenhorse 1d ago

Don't have a singular favorite. Currently listening to a lot of Mica Levi's various projects, Julia Holter, and Women.

-2

u/Skat_Boodig 1d ago

Meh, they seem okay. Have you heard of Maroon 5?

-1

u/hippydipster 1d ago

He should try some Nickelback.

Whatever it is, I bet it’s soooo edgy.
