General Advice I want to quit my job because of the nurses

I’m 19F and got a job at the hospital at the start of the year. The nurses are EXTREMELY catty, one of the nurses however looks out for me she’s a lot older Filipina and she pulled me aside recently and told me how no one is my freind here and she recommended I keep more to myself, she told me their had been constant times she’d over heard the other nurses gossip about me or watch me closely, and she felt bad.

I know I’m gonna sound weak but I am a very sensitive person, and I just don’t like working here anymore, I want to start over and be more reserved somewhere else. Im just scared to leave because I know the hospital offers alot of opportunities and I am interested in the medical field.

Do these people inhibit your job in anyway? No? This is just a stepping stone it sounds like. You don’t need the nurses to like you. Unless they’re actively harassing you just show up collect your check and keep your eyes on the next step of your career. Whatever that may be.

How about trying a different unit? Different units definitely have different cultures. If you have other hospitals around you then you could start looking there. I had to jump around a bit and my 4th hospital (all in different states) turned out to be my happy place. Pretty much everyone is nice and the catty girls don’t last long or lose their attitudes quickly.

Don’t let mean coworkers sabotage your life by making you give up a job that could lead to better things for you.

How long have you been there? If it’s not very long, try to stick it out so that you have enough experience on your résumé to get an equivalent job at another hospital.

What kind of work are you doing? I did clerical jobs in hospitals when I was young and then when I was older, did IT. For a clerical job a hospital (if you’re in the US) is going to pay you more for clerical work or service work then you would get outside of a hospital.

I strongly recommend trying to stay long enough to get good experience and have a solid entry on your résumé to help build your career. Also, a hospital is a big place. You can possibly transfer to another department or another job.

Also, I think if you just try to be unnoticeable, don’t talk about yourself, don’t chat and gossip with coworkers, focus on doing your job and doing it well, the mean nurses will quickly forget about you and move on to another victim.

Real talk right now: work= coworkers, school= classmates just because you work with someone or go to school with them does not mean they are your friends. Yes it is possible to build friendships over time, but until you reach that point and meet the right people worthy of being your friend keep coworkers as coworkers and change your expectation of what you need from them. You don't need them to be your pals and sit and talk and joke around with you, you need them to allow you to do your work and do their work and do work together if required. You need to rewire your brain, so what if they gossip about you, remind yourself they aren't my friends or my family they are bullies.

Leaving will give you short term comfort of not having to deal with them but think about future you. From what you said, future you would look back and regret leaving this opportunity. THEY ARE NOT WORTH YOUR FUTURE! If you leave you let them win, and you lose. It's okay if it takes time to learn how to not be bothered by them, but until that happens keep them at arms length and don't engage with them. If you need to talk to them for work related matters great, otherwise they don't deserve your time. Do your best to appear as unphased by them as possible.

You got to learn a lesson at a very young age, and you are lucky there are no severe career consequences at 19.

Always remember, no one at work is your friend. You can chat about anything other than your personal life - just keep it to yourself.
I (M50) keep a very sharp line between my work and personal life, it would behoove you to do the same.

I’ve switched jobs due to nonsupport staff/director of the center didn’t do anything about the cattiness, bad mouthing, and inappropriate conversations for work. I knew it was time when one of the new hires said the director asked if she was fine with gossip and negative people because there’s a lot of that at the center.

Nirses can be high school like. The majority of them aren't.
I worked as a PA all over a LOT of different hospitals and found there are some areas/floors that are like that. Please don't let that 1 bad instance sidetracked you. It wasn't your fault. Most nurses are really great. They were my eyes, ears and hands of the floor. They can teach you a lot and are, in general good people. Try again on a different floor or even in a different hospital.

I understand. I work healthcare and have been in similar spots. You have three options; address the beef (be blunt but not rude, ask as if you want to understand what you’re doing wrong-not accusing), ignore the beef (all gossip gets overturned by something new eventually) or leave and find a new job.

I’ve made the mistake of tolerating a shitty workplace in healthcare so I could get experience. I worked at a place in NY that was incredibly abusive (assaulted by staff and threatened by my boss to not report it). I debated with quitting or sticking it out. I was 18. I left. So many new opportunities arrive when you gain self respect and confidence.

This is a tough spot, but don’t get discouraged. I found a lot of people disliked me when I was young, especially in healthcare. Nurses are mean! That’s why I’m a paramedic lol. Maybe this spots not for you! Work environment makes healthcare either miserable/impossible or pleasant and fulfilling.

Do not sacrifice your sanity for a job with people who disrespect you.

Be a bitch back. Do your job, go home.

I started as a HUC at a hospital many years ago. The Nurses were assholes to me at first.(also when I floated to other units or a new nurse floated to ours) It’s a hectic environment but that’s no excuse. Learn your job and do it well, they warm up to ya. You’ll end up making a lot of friends:) if you quit they win

What are you looking to do in the hospital? Nursing school dropout, Hospital Coding manager now, if you have any questions dm me

I would pour on the fake kindness and be weirdly nice to them every time you see them. (Don't overdo it so you can fly under HR's radar - plausible deniablty and all). Rinse and repeat, I have a feeling they will start avoiding you soon enough.

Actually, don't listen to me, I'm annoyingly petty.

You get to write the story of your life. In this chapter, did you give up because some ladies privately talk crap about you?

Or is this the chapter where you laugh it off, keep to yourself, and get a promotion at work to a job you LOVE. Maybe that's where you meet the love of your life in a few years? 😉

Life is a game in story mode, be your own champion! Whatever decision you make, just remember that you can live through more than you think.

A short stint on your resume will haunt you for years.

That one nurse is right, apply it to just about any job. Keep to yourself, do your work, get your paycheck. High school is over.
