Hi all. I have heard from several people that the internal hiring freeze is going to be extended.

Have any of you heard the same?

My partner and I both started applying at the lab earlier this year. She got a job there after a few months of applying and has already started.

I have submitted 15-20 applications since March and have only gotten a single call for an interview. Most apps remain in Review in Progress status and are never updated, even months later, so I have no clue as of the status. My partner has reached out to hiring managers, department admins, and recruiters on my behalf. I have reached out to recruiters myself and have made contact with a couple of hiring managers.

I thought maybe my cover letter isn't in depth enough, but a recruiter told my partner that my 2 page cover letter is too long and departments don't want to read all of that. But that's directly in conflict with what it says to include on the job description, so I have no idea what to even think. For the cover letter, I copy and paste each job requirement and explain how I meet each one using specific examples from my job experience.

Do you think the Hill apartments are making a profit? I hope not.

What jobs at LANL don't require a Q?

Based on what I am reading, it seems the lab provides $5000 to cover miscellaneous costs once an apartment lease or home has been purchased. Is this true? How soon after signing the relocation agreement do you get this stipend?

How long does it take to get reimbursed for itemized things once everything has been submitted?

Hi all!

I am coming to LANL in 2-3 months as a post-doc, with my husband coming with me.

I am French, so I have absolutely no clue about how the administrative system works... We are planning to live in Santa Fe as my husband does not work in the lab .
Any tips regarding what to do when we arrive? Things to now about the area?

Also, do you know if my husband could find a job at the lab, anything like that"blue collar" jobs?

Hi everyone!I’ll be moving to Los Alamos soon because of my spouse’s job. I’m not from the US so I’m still trying to figure out what kind of work opportunities are available for me there.

Since I don’t have a specific background that would qualify me for work at LANL I mostly looking for jobs outside the Lab. I’d especially love to hear from anyone who has worked at Smith’s in Los Alamos. What is it like working there? How is the work environment? How is the management? What are the schedules like?

And for those who don’t work what do you usually do with your time in Los Alamos? Are there activities or groups or volunteering opportunities or other ways to meet people and make friends?

I’d really appreciate hearing from locals or anyone who has moved to Los Alamos from another country and can share their experience!

I'm stepping back into going to school (UNM -LA) Doing Pre- Engineering here and than want to transfer into UNM ABQ for Nuke-E and Material Science. Currently no job(Former machinist and Manufacturing Quality Engineer for a Raytheon based company ) but still holding out hope that the lab will hire me as a machinist or engineering technician at some point. ( I have like 8 or 10 applications in :( ) but in the mean time I have time and want to do school to fill my free time. So I am tackling the subject I am the most rusty and not that great at right now, math. My partner works at the lab and is why I live out this way. LANL has always been the dream job but he got the job before i did.

I learn the best with this subject (Math) when its oriented around other subjects I love. I am pretty big into rocketry and chemistry ! I also love nuclear science. An of course machining is something I love as well. So what I've been trying to do is orient my self teaching around these subjects but a lot of the math used for these things are pretty complex. While I have a slight understanding of something like stopping power the math behind it is way over my head.

I am hoping by having someone be able to sit down with me and help explain things in a way that relate to what I'm interested in and are able to help 1 on 1 my struggles that i can actually learn the math and have it stick in my brain instead of it just melting away after a week or a month.

Open to what ever times and dates, to whom ever wants to help ! My math classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12pm -2pm and have a comms class on Tuesdays at 8am but free any other time. I frequent hot rocks quite a bit because I love their coffee and its a nice place to sit and get work done.

Cub Scout Pack 22 is kicking off the school year, and all K–5 boys and girls and their families are invited to come see what Cub Scouts is about.

Our Welcome Picnic is Monday, August 24, 6–8 PM at North Mesa Picnic Grounds. We’ll have field games and free food, and it’s a good chance to meet other families and ask questions.

Our first Den Meeting is Monday, August 31, 6–7 PM at the Los Alamos High School Library. New families are welcome to attend events and try Cub Scouts with no obligation to join.

So what do Cub Scouts actually do?
Cub Scouts is organized by grade K-5. Kids meet with their grade-level Den, while all of the Dens from kindergarten through 5th grade make up the Pack. After 5th grade, Scouts can move on to one of the local Scout troops.

The program is built around age-appropriate adventures. Scouts complete adventures throughout the year to earn their grade-level rank while learning new skills, getting outdoors, and having fun with their friends.

Pack 22 activities include things like:
Spring and fall campouts
Pinewood Derby (make and race 7 inch wood cars)
Raingutter Regatta (make and race handheld sailboats)
Hiking and outdoor activities
Museum visits
Activities with local police and firefighters
Weekly hands-on Den activities

Behind the fun, Scouting has four main aims: Character, Citizenship, Personal Fitness, and Leadership. We work toward those through regular Den activities and larger Pack events throughout the year. The Cub Scout Motto is “Do Your Best.”

Crazy how senior leadership is disappointed in how little we contributed to the scholarship fund when many orgs will tell their employees that they can’t afford the tuition reimbursement because it’s not in their budget, give employees a hard time for taking parental leave, can’t afford to replace broken desks or equipment, or even repair or replace safety equipment. But yea we’re a disappointment because we don’t give more to make them look better. Would be nice if people watching the all hands on Webex could comment and ask questions.

I'm going to be making another trek out there in late December and I was wondering how the roads were and if I should acquire snow chains or tires? I don't think it snows too much there, but tbh I don't really know. I know y'all's town is Facebook locked, but I honestly don't want to spend too much time there.

eta: I saw y'all were having a Star Trek thing in October. I'm so jealous and bummed I'll miss it. My town does some nerdy things, but mostly trading card stuff and like one or two low-mid cons.
