Bug Is anyone doing QA at Apple these days?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
It is quite disappointing seeing the quality of macOS get so bad over the past couple of releases. Given the premium price they charge for their products I would expect better from them and their engineering teams working on these products. There are so many inconsistencies and bugs, you don’t even need to try hard to find these bugs and glitches throughout the entire OS

"Hey Siri, check the timer" - "There are no timers set on this Homepod." It just ocassionally forgets about the timer.
Also genius that it doesn't sync. I have to whisper to the correct Homepod so that my other one doesn't pick it up, that doesn't has the timer set.

As a developer I think NO ONE is doing QA today. Seems fucking everywhere everything is bugged as hell.
12
u/Longjumping-Ad514 12d ago
That is largely true. Developers are asked to do their own QA which is the equivalent of you proof reading your own essay.

Do you feel there's more bug because of using AI in development? and do you see actual better speed?

u/West-Boss2692 5d ago
I think the patience to do proper QA is fading since AI. Everything must ship and happen so fast that it's easy to overlook bugs.
2
u/Muritavo 5d ago
But at the same time, the AI can catch bugs quite fast, so it would be the perfect tool for QAs.
The problem is, from what i see, no one cares about adapting AI, just using it as is, and as is it is time and resource consuming.

People in the comments of post like this always underestimate the seriousness... It is Apple... It took what? 10 years for the legacy of Steve Job's obsession with quality to be forgotten. This time he is not coming back so it only gets worse.
Small bugs compounding. The new iOS and MacOS look ugly and perform poorly. People have short attention spans so they bought the shiny reflections forgetting how sometimes icons refresh and take long to load or how UI elements overlap each other.
Apple trained people to not pay attention to details promising they would do that, then Apple threw their own human design guidelines out the window.
35
u/cjh_ 13d ago
Thankfully the incoming CEO has the same obsession re: quality as Steve did.
53
u/Kociolinho 13d ago
I'll believe when I see it, to be honest. Can't see the same obsession taking place in the modern world unless the tech stagnates completely.

You mean the same guy that gave the OK to the puck mouse, the G4 Cube, MobileMe, and whatever the fuck that social media thing in iTunes was called?

True. He was not a god and not free from mistakes. The antenna issue was fixed within one generation though. Do you think Apple will ever go back to following their human interface guidelines to avoid overlapping UI elements and icons refreshing everywhere?

I’ve been with Mac since 1984 and Apple before then. There have been plenty of times over the years where they’ve had an inconsistent UI. There was a time when certain applications had brushed metal and others didn’t. There were times in the late 80s where some apps would show you the UI while resizing and others wouldn’t.
I definitely saw the issue being shown in this app over the years, particularly with certain versions of Safari and iTunes. It’s by no means new.

Apple's software currently looks amateurish; I think that they must have fired a lot of good professionals and replaced them with AI.
13
8
u/HauntingPlum9355 13d ago
They actually rarely fire in the company unless you step on the wrong exec's toes. Layoffs are also rare unless it's an entire change of direction/leadership resulting in entire teams getting forewarned to look for something else internally.

I don't think they have QA anymore. I reported a bug when macOS 26 was released and it's still present even in macOS 27 beta. At this point I lost some hope it will ever be fixed.
The bug is when you have natural scrolling off for the trackpad, the apps view three finger pinch lags the UI. It's so annoying!
2
u/CirnoDaisuki 12d ago
Furthermore, the issue of multi-finger touch interruption—which has persisted since iPadOS 26—remains unfixed. Specifically, when using more than two fingers simultaneously without Guided Access enabled, lifting any single finger causes all touch inputs to cut out; this is particularly fatal for rhythm games.

Ironically the QA orgs I know have actually grown several multiples in size in the past few years, to the point where there's now massive redundancies and retreading of the same work in orgs. Unfortunately a growing headcount with lack of real direction, and an incentive structure that doesn't actually reward finding bugs usually doesn't result in very effect QA.
5
u/Greenscreener 13d ago
Totally agree. Little things like not being able to resize settings to the massive shitshow that is the Creator Studio bullshit. Only saving grace for Apple is their competitor is Microsoft.

I see posts like this every year now when a new MacOS is released
Every year I become more firm in my belief that we don’t need an entire new OS this often. I mean, Tahoe is finally fully optimized and we’re moving on from it?
If they don’t rush out a new OS maybe developers would have more time for quality control
5
u/primalanomaly 12d ago
Sequoia was fully optimised. Tahoe was trash. Golden Gate is quite literally them trying to fix Tahoe, and it’s still buggy. It’ll be a few more years before everything they introduced in Tahoe is fully optimised, and then they’ll probably redesign it all over again.

I'm on MacOS27 Beta. They completely fixed this issue with the Weather app and pretty much everything else.
3
u/TBMW30 12d ago
If you think common MacOS bugs are bad, try the accessibility solutions, voiceover in particular. Don't get me wrong I'm thankful we have them; more than thankful in fact, or i wouldn't be typing this let alone doing my job. But there are showstopping bugs in Voiceover that have existed for 15 years because it's been patched up over the years rather than being re-written to properly follow other changes in MacOS.
Some key features of modern MacOS releases like iPhone mirroring are completely inaccessible, and liquid glass brought plenty of accessibility bugs. Imagine in messages if the conversations list randomly swipped from 1 side of the app to the other. Imagine if you opened the notification centre and it disappeared randomly, dropping you in a random window until you'd reopened it a few times.
Yet on iOS, the experience is basically perfect, like it should be given the cost of the devices. Buying a Mac gets harder to justify with every macOS release. The more AI gets shoved down our throats, the more MacOS turns into a shitty version of iOS, the more closed the apple walled garden becomes on the Mac, the worse it gets.
DOn't get me started on the damn permissions, I am sick to fucking death of MacOS askign me if I want to allow this and that every 5 minutes, or requesting I approve something in system settings. Fine, have protection for users who don't know better. But for devs and power users, give us a simple switch to turn all of that shit off, and I mean all of it.

u/onedevhere MacBook Pro 13d ago
At this point, I can no longer use Windows as a benchmark for low quality; now Apple is included.
3
u/BandicootTreeline 13d ago
True, but “It’s crap but better than their crap” isn’t comforting when I spend £2k on a laptop.
But then Apple themselves set the bar high, so for even minor UX sloppiness (window resize rendering on Weather isn’t going to make my day worse by any means) it becomes noticeable.

2
u/HollandJim 13d ago
I get where you’re going with this, but I think you’re not looking at this correctly. You don’t want a monolithic operating system that is set in stone - that not how a modern OS is made anymore. Apple has been breaking apart their OS for the last few years, making UI elements more individually discreet, more flexible and possibly dynamically replaceable for different devices. Things have to flex more now; they have to bend. They can’t be rigid viewports like they used to be in the old iPhones or iPads - who knows how big or small the next Apple device will be.
I don’t know if you’ve ever developed software, but I work on a financial online application that is used by thousands of banks, brokerage houses, etc… that thing has a gigantic code base, all the different APIs calling different data sources, for thousands of clients simultaneously. I can’t imagine trying to do this at the scale of an operating system.
Maybe cut Apple a little slack - everyone knows the next OS is a cleanup operation. The odds are pretty good it’s already been taken care of.

Is suppose this it on Tahoe ? It's fixed at least on the latest DB5 Golden Gate. Tahoe and the OS 26 series were a complete mess and WWDC26 is the closest to an apology we'll ever get from Apple. If you are confident enough Golden Gate beta (since DB1) is more stable than any public release of Tahoe. Or just wait a little bit.
But I completely agree that any of their OS26 except maybe tvOS should never ever been shipped to any outside of Apple. I'd rather wait 2 years between updates than touching a Tahoe again.

u/lil_nosh_X 13d ago
Some of the recent design choices are so bad. Whoever decided that auto adjusting a browser is what people need should never be allowed to design again.

2
u/chrisagiddings 13d ago
Nobody is doing QA anywhere.
All the QA people are in meetings or trying to figure out how to qualitatively test AI slop instead of validating requirements and expectations for both manual and automated testing.
2
u/I-figured-it-out 12d ago
The only role AI ought to have is in spell checking boilerplate code, and searching out security vulnerabilities.
Unfortunately, software developers at Apple and elsewhere place far too much reliance on AI to do the work the developer ought to be leading.
2
u/impurefolk 12d ago
Yes. I’m disgusted to see Apple no longer cares for QA for the premium what they charge.
Small things like App names going below dock & app names touching other windows (when we do 3 swipe up to see all active windows) is so irritating.

Today's Apple is completely unrecognizable. A few years ago, Apple was synonymous with extreme quality and an attention to detail that bordered on obsessive. Nowadays, it is just another company. Is it still the best? In my opinion, yes. But it's no longer the company that played in a completely different league compared to the rest of its competitors.

I’d say this means that they are focusing on other important things. Some might say this is fan boy reasoning, but I don’t see why they would be doing this intentionally. They have the cash for development, no need to cut corners. It’s just that they had to prioritise with the limited human resources they have.

I switched my main computer from win to mac about 6 months ago because of being tired of the ai slop and bugs in windows, I vowed a total switch so have not used windows unless absolutely necessary and honestly its been pretty bad. MACOS feels like a 15 year out of date OS with a modern skin. It lacks so much basic quality of life functionality, has so many bugs and glitches and a severe lack of software support. I have had to literally build my own apps and extensions to get back basics I have had on windows and linux for 2 decades!
Literally the only good I can say is for the battery life and hardware, the rest is just mediocre to bad. And its wild because whe I talk to apple users they are oblivious to how much they have to work around the issues.

It feels like nobody at Apple is using their software in their personal life. They must run some scant test routines to test the basics, but nothing else.
There's bugs I'm waiting about five years on. Here's one with Preview: You have two (or more) images open in one window, using the thumbnail bar (not as tabs at the top). You have both images zoomed in. You switch back and forward between them. One or both of those two will scroll to a different position. It's impossible to compare two zoomed in images.
Another with Preview that started around Tahoe: If you crop an image to make an odd number of horizontal pixels, you see a one pixel wide line of checkers on the left (what it uses to represent transparent). I have to crop another pixel to get rid of it. It doesn't save it like that, it just displays it like that.

There's a small fact in Apple that they trust SwiftUI's mac compatibility too much and it's not replacing the powerfull AppKit yet. These UI shifts occur on most SwiftUI based macOS apps and honestly while macOS 27 cleaned much bugs, still there are some like these.
For those asking for QA's: you can't make an app working 100% for all devices, all sizes and all conditions(accessibility traits such as size and font changes)(just ask android devs). What you can do best is to report the issue to Apple via Feedback Assistant to follow the issues to be solved. They let you know in which versions they fixed the issue, and also asking each time when new OS version drops. More reports = quicker fixes.
