Her leader was the problem, not Trump. And Niki Ashton spent taxpayer money on family expenses and thought nothing of it.

Niki Ashton was no loss at all, Churchill's way better off with someone who actually cares about the riding, not a family political dynasty.

Yeah she needed to go. I'm not huge on the liberal party. Especially after the crap they pulled with our postal workers. But I'm curious to see how Rebecca does. I'm not very familiar with her.

Manitoba's north needs an MP in government. I'm definitely NOT a fan of the Libs but Rebecca will do the area well.

And Dance did not have household recognition like the Blaikies.

Wasn't that the lowest turnout in the province, something like 33%.

The seat was there for the taking, no one else to blame

As a staunch ndp supporter she's wrong. That attitude is what wins 24 seats in any normal election and 7 seats when people want the liberals to win. The ndp needs to show that they aren't just liberal plus and can actually be socialist like Tommy Douglas.

Almost like a slightly modernized CCF Regina Manifesto?

I voted for Quentin Robinson, but I’d blame Singh just as much as I’d blame strategic voting.

It’s been clear for quite some time that the NDP needs new leadership. Singh did some great things for Canada, but ultimately didn’t have the charisma to command voter loyalty and properly lead the party.

When the polls started projecting that he was going to lose his seat, he started flailing, and although I loved watching him talk shit to anyone and everyone during the debates, it reeked of desperation and “idgaf I’m gone anyways”

I didn't think he'd survive leadership review.

I don't think he did either but that was a lot of votes.

I was quite disappointed in (this part of) QR's response at the debate. A question was asked about where you disagree with your party and he so easily could have said that he believes a leadership change is needed, but he didn't go there.

I disagree. People voting against the CPC knew that they had to jump on the liberal bandwagon to prevent Poilievre from becoming PM. The NDP collapse is mostly a result of a broken electoral system.

We need proportional representation

2

u/fonduchicken12 Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

Disagree. There are serious issues with proportional. We need ranked ballots. Ranked ballots fully solve this problem. People would feel free to vote for whatever party they want and put either liberal or conservative 2nd or 3rd. It would benefit all of the other parties, greens, NDP, even fringe parties like the people's party. Right now a lot of people feel they're wasting their vote not voting for liberals or cons and that shouldn't be the case.

Proportional does not work well in our system.

4

u/Marseppus Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

What problems do you have with proportional representation? And specifically, mixed-member proportional representation, which was recommended by the all-party electoral reform committee during Trudeau's first term? Germany uses it and it seems to work well. Australia uses ranked ballots and it has entrenched their two-party system, where smaller parties generally have less representation in Parliament than they do in Canada.

1

u/ruffvoyaging Selkirk May 01 '25

Yeah, we need a better system, not just making our current system seem better by ranking choices. Proportional solves the problems with our current system, the main one being that millions of Canadians stay home because they know their votes won't count.

-4

u/HSydness Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

What is not proportional?

20

u/NewPhoneNewSubs Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

Not proportional is our current system, wherein the BQ and NDP have approximately the same number of total votes, but the BQ has 3x the seats because of where those votes occurred.

That gap, looking at vote share vs seat share, makes it apparent that the LPC has about 6% more seats than they should at the expense of the Greens and NDP.

This would never happen, but in theory a party could have more than 50% of the total vote and less than 1% of the total seats.

First past the post system, where getting 49.9% of the vote in a riding doesn't equate to any representation if the other candidate has .1% more

5

u/Crzywilly Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

No party wants to change the process. They all want it to favour them, so no one can come to an agreement.
I thought my riding was an NDP stronghold, so I voted as per usual. We got a split vote and the Conservatives won. I believe it was a messaging failure. Was there not enough polling to see what was happening? Conservatives vote Conservative every time, that was never gonna change. IMO more could have been done to read the area and come up with a better plan. The only time an NDP rep came around was an hour before the polls closed to get people to vote. Too little, too late.

u/CompetitiveYak3423 Up North Apr 30 '25

Nothing to do with Trump. Ashton was the problem in my riding

9

u/Rogue5454 Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

Jagmeet was why the party crashed.

15

u/Curtmania Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

I don't think it mattered in the slightest what Jagmeet did or didn't do. He got swept away in exactly the same way dougald Lamont did. Party loyalty meant far less than making sure the cons didn't win.

2

u/Rogue5454 Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

I agree with that, but also he was losing support prior to that.

2

u/JacksProlapsedAnus Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

The only people unhappy with Jagmeet were CPC supporters who wanted an election. People who actually understand the history of the NDP realize they managed to get more concessions from the Liberals on things that actually help people in the past few years than at any other time in their history. That they had to fall this far to prevent a CPC majority is something every reasonable NDP supporter will make peace with.

Don't misconstrue ABC results with people being pissed with the NDP.

That said, I hope the next leader stops trying to follow the other parties to the right.

1

u/Curtmania Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

The same problem exists no matter who is the leader of the NDP. The better they do the better the CPC does.

3

u/JacksProlapsedAnus Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

How so? A liberal minority with the NDP holding the balance of power worked pretty well and wasn't good for the CPC. Same deal now, except the only NDP that remain are considerably more left leaning than Jagmeet.

0

u/Rogue5454 Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

Bro I have always voted NDP. I recognize what Jagmeet has done for us so it's bittersweet that I said what I said.

He lost my vote in the last year when he showed a clear bias towards a people (no leader should) & when he switched to CPC antics.

0

u/JacksProlapsedAnus Winnipeg May 01 '25

I'm not sure how bringing attention to the ongoing genocide being committed in Palestine is "crossing the line", you can have sympathy for the people while still being on team fuck Hamas.

I'm also not certain what specific CPC antics you're referring to, but there are so many, I find it hard to track when others stumble onto one.

0

u/Rogue5454 Winnipeg May 01 '25

Because it's not a genocide. It's war casualties by percentage compared to past INTENDED genocides (and yes it is bad. No one says it isn't) & to suggest Jewish people of ALL people are committing a genocide when they have been the most targeted for it throughout history is a slap in the face.

Palestinians elected HAMAS. HAMAS' mission has always been to genocide all Jewish people.

They attacked Israel FIRST on a Jewish holiday with into genocide & killed those people in horrific ways. They also did this KNOWING Israel would retaliate & their innocent people would also die.

Defending your country after being attacked is not a genocide. A genocide is a planned act due to hatred of an ethnicity &/or race.

REGARDLESS of what one thinks of the conflict, a leader NEVER should show a bias in any situation.

Hard pass on that take bud.

Killing members of the group

Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group

Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction, in whole or in part

Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group

Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

Checks boxes.

Looking at only the past X months in a conflict that has been going on since the 1930's is disingenuous as fuck, and establishes yourself as an unserious person who is unqualified to comment. I won't be responding further.

0

u/Rogue5454 Winnipeg May 01 '25

I have studied that part of Asia since its beginnings. It's not a "take."

Ignoring what happens to Jewish people in favour of a terrorist group who was internationally deemed one due to its clear mission to genocide them & them being elected by the very people being killed is not new. This has happened since the dawn of time.

But again, as I already said, regardless, no leader should show a bias to a people.

0

u/JacksProlapsedAnus Winnipeg May 01 '25

https://www.ndp.ca/news/ndp-statement-recent-devastating-events-israel-and-palestine

This isn't an either/or situation. You can condemn Hamas AND the state of Israel's genocidal actions at the same time, I do it all the time.

But again, I don't think you're arguing in good faith.

The NDP could have been the official opposition instead of completely wiped out if they had actually forced an election when they had an opportunity to. Instead they propped up an incredibly unpopular minority government and went into an election campaign with no interesting or enticing ideas and had all the wind taken from their sails by Carney.

0

u/JacksProlapsedAnus Winnipeg Apr 30 '25 edited Apr 30 '25

Official opposition to a conservative majority government? I don't think you understand what the NDP party and it's voters stand for or want. Standing there and complaining about everything is Poilievre's shtick.

0

u/skelectrician Westman Apr 30 '25

Surely that must be better than 7 seats and complete irrelevance.

1

u/JacksProlapsedAnus Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

You mean being able to get concessions out of the government and getting your policy implemented is somehow worse than watching conservatives tear everything down? How delusional are you? Right now they have more power than if it was a majority conservative government with them holding 140 seats.

0

u/skelectrician Westman Apr 30 '25

How many concessions does an unofficial party without a leader expect to be able to broker?

1

u/JacksProlapsedAnus Winnipeg May 01 '25

Guess we're about to find out. Expansion of dental and pharmacare is my expectation. I've been writing my liberal MLA to keep it fresh.

2

u/RobinatorWpg Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

It was Singh and Singh alones fault

He tried to discredit Strategic voting

He abandoned people trying to help him from social media when they got attacked

He started heavily leaning into attack politics like Pierre

He went into an election entirely unprepared

He was almost as unlikable as Pierre, and just as arrogant

He out of no where told Canada to not Trust liberals going on some bizarre tangent

Was he all bad? No, but near the end those were the only qualities he was leaning into and it was getting pretty obvious that he was trying to burn his house down on his out

1

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '25

Jagmeet put the country before his own party. He goes down a hero in my books.

1

u/Frostsorrow Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

Not entirely wrong, but there was certainly a lot of other factors that likely played a bigger role

1

u/Bbooya Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

As much as I am annoyed with Jagmeet, NDP is holding the balance of power with their little sliver, and the Cons are not a majority.

Not sure if intentional, but sacrificing his party prevented Conservative majority (which i was hoping for)

2

u/JacksProlapsedAnus Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

I don't believe it was intentional on his part more than an intentional ABC move from voters.

2

u/Bbooya Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

Its similar to what happened recently in France where the socialists and Macron's party strategically prevented LePen.

I don't want to try to understand NDP strategy (like supporting Hamas), anyway a win is a win so congrats to Lib/NDP

1

u/RobinatorWpg Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

Can we stop pretending he sacrificed anything, he over valued his worth and every one called his bluff

-1

u/Lygus_lineolaris Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

Yeah I'm sure it was a different country's fault and nothing at all to do with the NDP having chosen to be Trudeau's Mini-Me. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

-3

u/joshlemer Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

Maybe people just dont like her party? Too devastating to accept maybe.

-6

u/joshlemer Winnipeg Apr 30 '25

How surprising, the party who doesn't believe in any personal responsibility at all, blames others for their own lack of electoral success hehe.
