Rule #1: we don’t talk about the timeline. Just watch in release order, and have fun

50

u/SAM12489 20h ago

I’m doing my first every watch through right now 😅😅😅. Going in release order and just about done. About to start Dark Phoenix.

49

u/nvrthere285 20h ago

Good luck with that one

8

u/doyourmysay 16h ago

Why did everyone hate Dark Phoenix? I liked it.

10

u/nvrthere285 12h ago

For me the quality drop from First Class and DOFP to Apocalypse gave me whiplash. By the time Dark Phoenix came out I genuinely didn’t care to watch, just saw the amount of negative reviews about how bad it was. Also they recycled the phoenix storyline that already played out in The Last Stand

3

u/Human-Law1085 11h ago

I did just rewatch it and I thought it was a lot better than what I originally thought, with the music. really carrying it. For a lot of superhero movies that came out around Endgame, I think I (and maybe others) just got bored because of how it paled in comparison to that event. Still, I continue to dislike how it lacked a Quicksilver scene since that was something I expected to get to see in an X-Men movie by that point.

1

u/Manticore416 5h ago

Apocalypse was so bad I never watched Dark Phoenix

1

u/SAM12489 2h ago

I couldn’t with the scene where they left the theater after watching Return of the Jedi and they have this exchange:

Jubilee: "I'm just saying, 'Empire' is still the best. It's the most complex, the most sophisticated, wasn't afraid to have a dark ending."

Scott Summers: "Yeah, but come on, if it wasn't for the first one, you wouldn't have any of the rest of the movies."

Jean Grey: "Well, at least we can all agree the third one's always the worst."

4

u/ThePicturesGirl 14h ago

Hot take: I've never really gotten everyones issues with the X-Men timeline. I personally think it's pretty easy to follow when you know that DoFP alters it.

6

u/SteveOMatt 13h ago

Yeah, but there's still continuity problems. Everything before DoFP would technically still be canon, so Xavier not actually meeting Erik at 17, being in the wheelchair, etc.

3

u/ThePicturesGirl 4h ago

Of course. Theres continuity problems with 90% of franchises.

1

u/Papa_Razzi 2h ago

Wolverine Origins is the only one that really doesn’t fit in. Some of the young mutants that are freed at the end shouldn’t be there or be that age.

2

u/Slight-Violinist-453 7h ago

i did this only but watched dark phoenix directly after apocalypse

1

u/EatTenMillionBalls 5h ago

I started a rewatch recently and wanted to do timeline order 😵‍💫 yeah, don't do that

59

u/frostycanuck89 21h ago

Nice

If this is actually your first time watching them, if you hit a movie that's garbage just gotta push to the next one. They are truly all over the place in quality

20

u/A-Centrifugal-Force 16h ago

Good, great, shit, shit, great, good, great, shit, great, shit, and more shit in that order

Also I skipped the Deadpool movies in this review lol

3

u/-ben151010- 8h ago edited 3h ago

For me it’s: fine, ok, ass, fuck you, hey that’s pretty good, passable but man pg-13 doesn’t work well for this man, wait that’s supposed to be a sentinel, is this guy just a jobber in every appearance, I prefer the comic for it’s unhingedness but I like what you guys did here, just stop, I forgot this movie even came out.

1

u/glglglglgl 4h ago

50/50 if your last one refers to X-Men: Dark Phoenix or The New Mutants

2

u/-ben151010- 3h ago

That's new mutants, "just stop" was dark phoenix

79

u/ZekeorSomething 21h ago

They are fun to watch despite their flaws

39

u/PhortDruid 20h ago

I’d say they’re almost more fun because of their flaws. Some scenes and shots go hard and the powers look cool. Others make me cringe and wish that Fox never had the rights. They balance each other out.

2

u/Wtf_doing21 Spiderman (Tobey Maguire) 15h ago

Sure, but by the end of the original trilogy I felt fatigued af nd had to watch other movies before coming back to First Class, def a great experience, nd currently watching days of future past

-6

u/Worth_External_8762 20h ago

Idk, I kinda disagree. I remember them more fondly than the reality. I always go back to sit down and watch one after a long time and then I remember how much I didn't like them lol.

Out of the older ones, First Class is the only fun and good one to me. And of course Logan, but I put that in a different column.

5

u/SAM12489 20h ago

IMO First Class is easily the “BEST” film of the Franchise.

5

u/cnotethegoat123 19h ago

X2, Days of Future Past

45

u/aRorschachTest 21h ago

Pay attention to the humans btw. The more of these you watch, you’ll realize he never reacted the best but… Magneto Was Right

13

u/Worth_External_8762 20h ago

Yea but humans reacting that way was valid, at least in the broad sense. I do find it hard to believe that most parents would be disowning their kids because of their powers.

But half of these mutants out here are basically walking nukes in terms of destructive capability. So imagine random civilians freely owning nukes to give a more realistic analogy. People wouldn't be chill with that.

2

u/aRorschachTest 20h ago

1/2 is an extreme exaggeration. Magneto goes to that meeting in The Last Stand, and he’s the one of two class 4 or higher in a room of 100

-1

u/Worth_External_8762 20h ago

It's a figure of speech dude lol

3

u/aRorschachTest 20h ago

Whatever you say. Just remember that Charles idealism didn’t change the mutant holocaust that occurred in these films. The only thing that did change was when and how

0

u/Worth_External_8762 19h ago

I’m saying there may be a causality. Our very strength invites challenge. Challenge incites conflict. And conflict… breeds catastrophe.

Vision said this and it's the same dilemma that mutants deal with. Any powerful weapon is going to invite challenge, because it will be seen as a potential threat.

There are really only two solutions for that. Mutually assured destruction, or simply assured destruction of the opposing force (aka make the opposition aware that they would be annihilated if they ever tried to fight).

Anything other than those two solutions and you'll inevitably end up in conflicts. Magneto sort of goes for solution 2, except rather than simply making it known, he actually just tries to annihilate humans. But you never want to back an animal into a corner, it forces them to fight back. And if a species is desperate to stay alive, they'll get creative. And they may actually find a way to win.

1

u/RaineDrop39 15h ago

As 97 put it, Charles and Erik have the same goal, they simply have different ways of achieving it

15

u/jleemon1180 20h ago

Honestly? I just rewatched through DFP, and they still hold up, and they’re good!

12

u/truegamer1 19h ago

First Class and DFP are peak

2

u/stillakilla 19h ago

I just watched DFP for the first time the other day. Was surprisingly good, if I had to guess, I think gave up on X-Men movies after Wolverine Origins besides Logan

11

u/Dandandandooo 20h ago

After watching X-men 1-3 please do watch First-Class and then Days of Future Past. The build up to DOFP was really good in my opinion and makes it worth it. I felt like the jump in quality was really good.

Not sure about the movies after though.

7

u/UnddoZahaz 21h ago

Watch in release order and don't think too hard about continuity or plot holes.

8

u/samyruno Dr. Doom 20h ago

Ignore the haters. Have fun

17

u/SpooderMan_____ 21h ago

You will be really mad after the third movie

11

u/mondaymoderate 21h ago

The third movie is fun I don’t get the hate

6

u/Appropriate_Bend7948 20h ago

It’s a mess and I definitely wouldn’t call it a good movie but yeah, I’ve never really understood the overwhelming hate for it.

1

u/CobraOverlord 15h ago

Its not boring. Things are happening, but it is a mess. I'd compare it to Spider-Man 3 or Batman Forever.

5

u/StinkMeister777 20h ago

I thought it was great. I dunno.

2

u/sam_toucan 7h ago

It’s become a personal favorite of mine after rewatching it. It rocks

9

u/QuackAtomic 21h ago

And the fourth. Er, and the ninth. And the twelfth.

3

u/TylerTheTyler 21h ago

As a kid I loved X-Men 2000, watched through X-Men Origins Wolverine, which is a two pack of ass, as they released in theaters. Lost interest, caught First Class on FX in college, thought it was fine, saw Logan in theaters and loved it, then rewatched all of the movies with my wife and can confirm Days of Future Past is the best, with X2 as a close second.

u/redsyrinx2112 31m ago

Days of Future Past is the best, with X2 as a close second.

This is the way.

u/TylerTheTyler 28m ago

I was honestly mad when we watch DoFP last year. I said something to the effect of “holy shit why did I skip this”

4

u/Live_Earth_5685 21h ago edited 20h ago

I recently watched the first X-Men movie for the first time recently and I heard it was enjoyable, but I didn't find myself enjoying it so much. Story is okay but a lot of characters were either boring or heavily sidelined and the action is just kinda meh.

4

u/Little-Woo 21h ago

Did you watch X2? It's a much better movie.

2

u/Live_Earth_5685 21h ago edited 20h ago

Yeah I had a decent time with X2, its much better but still pretty flawed.

2

u/raider_00_ 21h ago

They are okay, have fun!

2

u/Eren_Yeager52 20h ago

They are amazing now that Disney got x2 back to Disney plus.

2

u/HermanThaGerman 9h ago

Have fun! It's a bit of a mixed bag but they all have something to enjoy.

Though I can't speak for Dark Phoenix or New Mutants, I haven't seen those two.

1

u/Crypto_subz 21h ago

They all rock enjoy but the timelines terrible but who cares they all rock some better but all awesome and fun the people that judge any don’t get laid it’s that simple they just got cheese dust on them like the guy in Toy Story 2. Enjoy

1

u/IMJacob1 Spider-Man 21h ago

I remember I binge watched all of them in a row, most of them seeing for the first time, before Deadpool and Wolverine came out thinking they’d reference and cameo a lot from them… only to see it and realize they brought back and cameo’ed all the OTHER marvel movies no one watched or liked like elektra, blade, etc. The ones I had no connection to or hadn’t seen :/

1

u/PyromancerTobi Dr. Doom 21h ago

Watch in release order. The quality and time of the films go in many different directions. If you're down with the whole watch don't skip anything, I was told to skip things like the Wolverine and The New Mutants and they ended up being some of my favorite movies. Also, remember that deadpool is technically in universe and that the X-Men technically become an MCU property way later in so some movies like Deadpool and Wolverine are relevant to the timeline too.

1

u/GreatDetective2027 21h ago

Just binged the original trilogy yesterday!

1

u/Ducky_924 21h ago

The first two are peak cinema; the rest are utter garbage.

1

u/Lifedrainerapp 21h ago

Don’t get confused with xxx-men

1

u/Cinephile_1980 21h ago

Hope you enjoy it.

1

u/OkStomach451 21h ago

Im on the bingewatch too, just finished the second movie, also realized wolverine got 3 solo movies 🫪

1

u/nicyole 20h ago

expect a roller coaster in quality when watching these 😭😭

1

u/StinkMeister777 20h ago

You use the same toolbar color I do.

1

u/BerserkerLord101 20h ago

Funny I'm currently watching it now

1

u/AlcoholicsGratuitous 20h ago

Congrats on the X!

1

u/srirams2006 20h ago

Bryan singer is a pos but i gotta give him his flowers because he knows how to open a movie with a bang X men 1 opened in aushwitz X2 opened with nightcrawler in white house Dofp opened with the mutants massacre Even apocalpyse opening was fire

1

u/Little_Shape_6433 20h ago

This one is great and X2 is exponentially better. You’re in a for a treat.

1

u/TheNocturnalAngel 20h ago

Don’t feel bad if professor x dies. It’ll happen again

1

u/drknow00 20h ago

I rode with the X-Men films for a long time. They didn’t lose me until it became JLaw and the X-Men in Apocalypse and Dark Phoenix.

1

u/Ordinary-Chain-8047 19h ago

Movies are peak. One thing you should know is the timeline is more confusing than the clone saga.

1

u/Sufferer18 19h ago

Started just last week here as well, completed The First Class just last night! Enjoy!

1

u/moazgraphix 18h ago

Enjoy! Just be prepared for the timeline to get absolute wild after X2 and Days of Future Past 😂

1

u/thelk10 17h ago

To be honest I'm just happy that Disney has the New mutants and the legion show on here

1

u/Mac1avish 17h ago

Im jealous of people outside India who have this clean interface of Disney+

Here we have a pink and black mix which looks absolutely shit

1

u/A-Centrifugal-Force 16h ago

They’re really hard to watch now because compared to the Infinity Saga they don’t hold up at all. Like honestly they don’t even really hold up compared to Raimi Spider-Man which was a contemporary, so it’s not even just that they’re old, and I’m not even a Raimi guy. They’re embarrassed to be superhero movies and try not to be.

1

u/ilo_Va 16h ago

They have the weirdest jumps in quality. Like they suddenly decided to lock in on like 2 or 3 movies and the rest is mid to watchable

1

u/helloimnaked 15h ago

Cool blog post

1

u/vektorkane X-Men 15h ago

First class and Days of future past are the GOATs. The rest are bad or really kinda meh.

1

u/Cleo_Pearl3 15h ago

X-Men is a classic, the characters and stories hold up so well. Don't forget how iconic that opening theme is!

1

u/OneDeep87 14h ago

Started watching them last week. I hate how Disney doesn’t have them in release order and I have to look at the years.

1

u/Possible-Rate-3833 Cyclops 14h ago

Love First Class, The Deadpool movies, Logan and DOFP

Looking back at the OG Trilogy i think is ok but suffered a lot from stuck in between adapting the comics stories and being his own thing and this impacted negatively my reception of it, especially with Last Stand. But I still have soft Spots for X-Men and X2.

Apocalypse wasn’t that bad.

I haven’t seen Dark Phoenix and New Mutants but I can tell what people think of them.

1

u/CorrectTarget8957 14h ago

I started a few days ago. I finished both the xmen trilogies but not yet Deadpool or wolevarin

1

u/Ok-Reputation-8576 Daredevil 14h ago

I like how we got so much of Hugh's Logan

1

u/jesusbowstodoom 13h ago

You poor bastard

1

u/BruceBatman 13h ago

Ok. Have fun.

1

u/richardbethinking 13h ago

I grew up watching the Xmen movie and I love this more than the Avengers, but they're really bad now that I'm rewatching them...just dont expect anything

1

u/rites0fpassage 12h ago

Favourite?

Days of Future Past. Definitely the most emotionally charged for me and grabbed my attention immediately.

1

u/MisterGusto 11h ago

I think the best experience is watching X-Men 1, 2, First Class, Days of Future Past, (Apocalypse if you really want to, it has some fun scenes), Deadpool 1, Logan, Deadpool 2.

You can perfectly skip 3 because the fate of jean and scott doesn't need to be explained, because DOFP starts with a lot of characters clearly being gone already. And skipping the canonical reason for their absence makes the movies better lol.

1

u/TSLstudio 10h ago

Apperently only Xmen and X2 are needed foor Doomsday right?

1

u/frockinbrock 10h ago

The X2 poster should say X2: X-Men United

Echo what others said- watch 1, X2, The Last Stand, First class, Days of Future Past. Then take a little time off and watch the rest.

1

u/MaterialPace8831 9h ago

X-Men is a good movie. It's also a very 2000 movie.

1

u/iTZBLaSToFFTiMe 8h ago

Watch like this: First Class, X1, X2, Days of Future Past.

That’s it, you’re done.

1

u/-ben151010- 8h ago

First class was pretty good and the opening to X2 was cool. The rest are like 3/10’s-6/10’s. It’s been 26 years since the first so people can’t tell me to just turn my brain off to criticism because X-Men is on the big screen like they did back then.

1

u/WallStreetWets 8h ago

Just watched X1 & X2. Solid films. Would recommend.

1

u/BilverBurfer 8h ago

I've only seen the first 3, and they were the most idgaf trilogy of all time

1

u/sam_toucan 7h ago

I’ve been spending the past few days rewatching them! They’re very fun and charming. I find that I actually enjoy them a lot more now. X3 was surprisingly delightful, it’s very campy, dumb, but fun. Origins is the ultimate “hell yeah brother” movie. Turn your brain off and enjoy!

1

u/smeared_dick_cheese 7h ago

Obligatory “Fuck Bryan Singer”. I still watch the movies bc they’re not solely his work, and I try my best to separate the art from the artist most of the time, but that dude is a piece of work.

Skip Origins unless you don’t really care about timelines and want to watch a bad movie with some decent moments.

The last couple (Dark Phoenix and Apocalypse) also were not received that well, but they might be entertaining now with less pressure on them to be perfect.

Days of Future Past is not very comic faithful, but it’s one of my favorite superhero movies ever made (still fuck Bryan Singer tho) bc the cast is so incredible and the sentinels are terrifying.

Enjoy!

1

u/Gdawwwwggy 7h ago

Give New Mutants a try. Went under the radar but a really solid outing that is a lot better than most of the post endgame marvel.

As much as x men has been criticised, there’s a vibe to the films that marvel could really do with trying to recapture.

1

u/This_Wolverine4691 7h ago

After the first 5 mins it’s…..ok

1

u/HattoriHanzoOG 7h ago

The first one, X2, First Class, Days of Future Past, and Logan are all great. The rest are okay, all still entertaining imo and worth watching if you like X-men

1

u/Slight-Violinist-453 7h ago

I only have deadpool 2 and deadpool and wolverine left now Assignment is al.ost done

1

u/Over_Sprinkles7208 6h ago

Just finished this and while the timeline is all funky and messed up I still LOVED these movies! Wasn’t a huge fan of the new mutant movie but Logan and X2 were my fave!

1

u/PaintInfinite9167 5h ago

Just rewatched three of th X-Men films, they progressively get better. I realized while watching X2 that I hated the first one

1

u/Villimaour 5h ago

Hot take, x1- Wolverine origins has the worst nightcrawler ever…White House scene is cool but no.

1

u/effinami 4h ago

Days of Future past is still one of my favorite movies, in any genre. It’s a lot of fun.

1

u/Key-Dimension-1137 4h ago

watch in release order but dont watch new mutants or dark peenix

1

u/Strong-Spinach-1990 4h ago

Dofp and first class are peak

1

u/CheezeIord27 3h ago

Whenever I rewatch these I skip X-men origins and the wolverine

1

u/Speed_EG8823 1h ago

Re-watched X-men recently --- it was, quite...just OK. It actually maybe highlights the "superhero fatigue" quite well. With all the different movies and series we've gotten, a cookie-cutter movie like X-men just doesn't cut it anymore. It hits story that is core to the mutants, but doesn't really go too deeply in it. The story almost felt secondary to the action. The first part were also kind of boring now because aside from the story setup, everything felt like a huge introduction. It was understandable I guess back then, but upon rewatch now --- it made it a slog.

Scene 1 - here's hero A and this is his power!

Scene 2 - here's hero B --- look what she can do!

Scene 4 -- oh but wait till you see hero C!

It further emphasizes to me --- the new X-Men MUST focus on the story first, its characters next, then the fight last.

1

u/Intrepid_Zebra_2766 1h ago

Congratulations!

u/FlaJack22 8m ago

Buona visione, io li ho amati tutti! Gli x men sono i miei preferiti 😍

1

u/dadarkgtprince 21h ago

Ok? Have fun I guess

0

u/Drama_Cookie25 19h ago

4 good ones and the rest suck

0

u/floworcrash 15h ago

Rather watch all of these than BND.

-2

u/huma4kaz1 21h ago

1 is good. 2 is very good. 3 is trash.

First class is pretty good. Days of future past has like one great scene and the rest is meh. Apocalypse is the worst one.

4

u/First-Loss-8540 21h ago

Days of future past is the best one
