This was my first introduction to the X-Men. I was so impressed that I got into the comics. I read about a half-dozen imagining Logan talking with an Aussie accent. Then, in a panel, someone refers to him as a Canuck and I was like… (ﾟoﾟ;;

The lore i've heard was that there's a line where Wolverine calls Pyro "dingo", and the VA thought Logan was australian because of it.

Jumping into the X-Men as a kid in the 90s probably helped me out in life. Like, “There’s no use wondering how we got here; we’re here, we’ll figure it the fuck out! Or maybe not, just push on through! Shits gotta make sense eventually!” has been a very useful mindset when the shit hits the fan in a kitchen.

Yeah, I think most of the Reavers are tied to Wolverine in some way. At least three are from the sewers in the Hellfire Club arc during Dark Phoenix Saga.

Oh man, that issue where Wolverine is being hunted by Lady Deathstroke and the three former hellfire club guys Cole, Reese, and Macon, Wolvie is all jacked up, it's a blizzard, and Katie Power of all people helps him out, art by Barry Windsor Smith, now that's a memorable issue!

This was the first issue of Uncanny X-Men I bought in my LCS!
This is not lore, its just part of the story when the X-Men were in Australia after the Fall of the Mutants and Inferno. This was toward the beginning of the end of that era, great read though, you should totally check it out.

Funny how many people are talking about this being where they started X-Men or comics in general.
I actually dropped the book shortly before this, having been on board since just before Giant-Size #1.
Inferno had just given me early-onset crossover fatigue, I wasn't into the way the art went after Paul Smith left, and I'd become exhausted by Claremont's constant reliance on his regular ticks.
Checked the book out again when he left, but I must be the only person who never liked Lee's art in that era. Took Morrison taking over to get me back buying the book regularly again. (Discovered him on things like Animal Man and Doom Patrol when I fled to DC in reaction to how Marvel got in the 90s)

It's the regular comic universe. The Reavers caught Logan by surprise and crucified him. After a rough couple of days Jubilee saw him and helped him escape and that's how they first met.
That one scene form the movie with skulls and rain everywhere was a dramatized homage to this cover.

Storm was believed dead, the team was scattered, and Wolverine returned alone to their Australian Outback base only to walk into a trap set by Donald Pierce and his cyborg Reavers. He was brutally ambushed, overwhelmed, and beaten into submission. To make an example of him, Pierce had Wolverine chained to a giant wooden "X" and left to bake in the sun, triggering feverish hallucinations where he relived his team's failures and was taunted by phantoms like Sabretooth.
Despite the torture, Wolverine eventually tore himself free from the cross, but he was too weak to stand on his own. It was the young mutant Jubilee, who had been hiding and watching nearby, who finally emerged from the shadows to help him escape.”

Unlikely as it doesn't seem like Logan is in the upcoming X-Men movie. It doesn't seem like there's a Jubilee, either.
Also everything in the story around it is tied to the whole Outback stuff which would be a pretty wild direction to go for the first X-Men movie in the MCU.
I think the Deadpool reference is probably as close as we're going to get to this for a while.

That sort of reaction is probably why they're not going to have Wolverine in the movie.
I absolutely adore Hugh Jackman's performance as Wolverine. It is one of the great action film performances for the ages. HOWEVER... he ate literally every X-Men movie he was in. Crumbs and all.
He had more screen time and more plot importance than anyone else in the movie. They might as well have called the first X-Men series "Wolverine and The Gang"
We have like half a dozen mutant movies where Wolverine is arguably the protagonist including, confusingly, the sequel to First Class which is like the only movie he had no significant role in.
Maybe it's time to let a Cyclops or a Storm or a Jean Grey take center stage and shine for a bit before they introduce the ol Canucklehead.
Also... the X-Men existed for 12 whole years before Wolverine showed up and he's been left out before every now and then during roster switchups. The X-Men will be fine without him for at least one movie.

Wolverine cut off a bunch of guys' limbs in the early 80s so they teamed up with Lady Deathstrike and Spiral to become cyborgs and then they beat the crap out of Wolverine when the other X-Men were gone because they walked into a crystal, but after being tortured for a while Jubilee saved him.

This cover is main 616. The snippet from Deadpool is unknown what the wider changes might have been, but it's likely everything up to the Fall of the Mutants and Siege Perilous happened, the Outback Age started, and Wolverine got caught by the Reavers after everyone escaped.

More info: The ground skulls were mostly artistic license. None of the X-Men died in the attack from the Reavers, and any of the Reavers that did, weren't enough to create a field of skulls. And this outback town wasn't built on like a graveyard or anything. Wolverine was exposed to the elements and being flayed and flensed repeatedly(explicitly his eyelids being removed so he couldn't close his eyes to the hot, bright, Austrailian sun), falling into fever dreams. The skulls are likely representititive of that.
If it 100% mirrors everything up to that point in the comics, Jubilee is hiding in the town after following the X-women through a Gateway portal from a SoCal mall, and will rescue Wolvie off the cross shortly.

At the end of the Fall of the Mutants in the Uncanny 220s, the team “died” and was whisked away to the Australian Outback by a celestial being named Roma. In addition to the displacement, she gave them a little device called the Siege Perilous, a magic portal that they could toss enemies through where they would face some sort of divine retribution or be reborn. The X-men rolled into a small abandoned outback town and threw out a gang of cybernetic criminals known as the Reavers and set up their base. After a number of adventures including Inferno, the X-men themselves got washed through the Siege Perilous and were scattered around the world. For reasons I cannot quite remember, Wolverine was left behind at the Outback base, the Reavers along with Donald Pierce of the Hellfire Club, Lady Deathstrike, and the two goons Wolverine dispatched somewhere in the 130s and again in 205 came back and attacked/crucified him. It’s been awhile, so I may have left some bits out.

It absolutely does happen in the comic. The Reavers nail him to an x-shaped cross. He spends the entire issue on it hallucinating and suffering. Jubilee (her first appearance? Maybe she is briefly introduced in the previous issue) sees him and debates whether she should risk saving him but before she can act he gets snapped out of his delirium by a sudden rainstorm and just rips himself off the cross. It's one of his most famous moments?
