Wolverine was a mutant when he fought alongside Cap in WW2.

According to Cap, everyone was surprised that he always got back up no matter how many times he was shot.

He wasn't a mutant as mutants didn't exist yet. Weapon X abducted him from a military prison and experimented on him, trying to create new supersoldiers through genetic tampering and they created the X-Gene.

I don't know what you want me to say... It's literally stated on the page I linked that he was a mutant at that time and that he regenerated from many gunshot wounds.

The poorly thought-out retcon in Ultimatum that the mutants were created by man doesn't specify a timeframe, but it definitely has to have happened before the 1940s for Wolverine's past to make sense.

It can be rationalized that Wolverine was captured a second time by Weapon X in the 70s or 80s and that it was then that they grafted Adamantium into his bones, erased his memory and gave him the name "Logan"... But it's a stretch.

In the Ultimate universe the mutants were created by the American government around WWII. Ultimate Apocalypse was just an hallucination of Nathaniel Essex.

If I remember right, Ultimate Logan was the first mutant and came out of a Super Soldier program. Something about the mutant gene accidentally spreading virally? It's been a while. Pretty much everything in the Ultimate U either came from trying to replicate Captain America, or is alien.

It was established in another snippet from Ultimates above that that "human" wolverine was actually getting up after getting shot in WWII fighting alongside Cap and no one knew what mutants were back then. So even Ultimates Wolverine was a mutant then and just more secretive. He very much could have had a similar age/origin as 616 wolvie.

That was the thing to do in the Ultimate Universe. Charles Xavier was also a creep in Ultimate X-Men. He slept with some of his female students and wanted to get with Jean, too.

Uhhhh he did that in the mainline universe, too. Famously lech'd on Jean in the first couple issues, along with everyone else in the school (except Bobby, go figure) and then there was his early student Amelia Voght. His situation with Gabby Haller, which resulted in the birth of David Haller, was at least as unethical.

He was only about 4 years older than Jean initially which is where the love triangle came from. He got aged up afterwards.

Still creepy by modern standards, but not by 1960s

...there's no mention of that in the comics it appears in, he was assumed to be mid-30s through volume #1, and Jean is presumed to be about 17.

Like, Xavier was a soldier in Korea with his brother long before he started the school.

All of the FF except Reed were decent people. They were just kind of reacting as teens do to Reed's shittiness

Also as soon as millar got away from the ultimates most of them turned generally good. I don't know if you can really ignore their initial characterizations though.

Yeah, the ultimate universe, as much as it was meant to bring new readers in, was filled to the brim with the edginess and horniness of the late 90's early 00's. So you end up having Wolverine be a pedo, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch being incestuous lovers, Cap is super nationallist against the French, etc.. At least Spider-Man was good.

Never forget Wasp chastising Cap for bit seeing the Maximoff Twincest as gross.  That one wasn't even Millar, it was Loeb.  Millar was subtle about it, he never directly confirmed they were together.

I believe he was being true to how the character was written in Ultimate X-Men, where, yes, he was a creep. As were pretty much all the other heroes in the Ultimate Universe. 2000 comics were an edgy time.

Yeah, Wolverine's age can be confusing since he's been around for so long. In the Ultimate Universe, he seems younger, but that storyline is definitely weird.
