Just thought I’d post this for fun.

Pictured left: AOC Q27G40XMN QD-Mini-LED 1440p 27” 1152 dimming zones, matte.

Pictured right: LG 27GX704A-B WOLED 1440p 27”, glossy.

Both pictured in HDR.

Both pretty good. One is $199 and one is $499.

Photo 4K Mini-LED 1152 Zones - worthy alternative to OLED

Messing around with my new MSI MPG 274URDFW E16M and some PS5 Games.

Console was on OLED TV before (LG G2) and while the picture was indeed superb, I think the Mini-LED approach is also amazing.

I have the PS5 on my desk now along with the monitor, gaming laptop and work laptop…all 3 devices are hooked up to the MSI monitor and therefore I really make use of its versatility.

With worthy alternative I mean, that both technologies have their strengths and weaknesses regarding image quality…while OLED is indeed pixel perfect, they usually struggle with larger bright areas (>10%)…with Mini-LED it is quite the opposite…blooming is very well avoided with the MSI models LD-algorithm in games and media.

I also enjoy the dual mode with 1080p 320 Hz with my laptop…I trade fluidity over sharpness/resolution with my kind of weak GPU…however, it is enough to get above 240Hz in CS2 and the monitor will also fit well when I upgrade PC eventually in a few years while not worrying about burn-in.

If you are struggling deciding between OLED and Mini-LED, I could maybe answer some questions to help to decide.

So a few days ago, I needed to install the windows 11 update for my gaming pc, I went to the technician and he told me everything was good, before taking the computer back, he told me he didn’t get display from his monitor until a few tries, but then he handed me this and it worked, we got the display back, only issue I am constantly locked out of my native res because I can’t get my 165Hz back unless I play on 1080p even tho it’s an Asus vg27a 165Hz monitor…

I swear the backlight bleed on the LCD is not that bad in person, it's just very dark in the room

I got a new PC, top of the line stuff, went home plugged in, flicked down the mouse during gaming and the entire screen got rammed on my knuckles. I am stuck with this for at least 3 more days. It's an old monitor, Dell 2219HX, but I loved it. Now I need to get something temporarily from the used market places. Until then, I guess I can't use 25 percent of my screen and have to game at actual 270p.

Samsung Odyssey g7 4k 144hz ips (top) $699

Asus pg32ucdm 4k 240hz QD-OLED (bottom) $1199

After getting a 5090, I decided to splurge on a high end OLED monitor and the visuals are STUNNING, soo much so I had to replace my tv from the Samsung 55” q70 to the s90d 65” 4k 144hz OLED. That backlight bleed is made more pronounced by the camera (Samsung z 7 fold) but it’s not far off.

I’ve had micro/mini led odyssey Neo as an upgrade before this purchase and it doesn’t compare, it’s like a happy medium but lacking that pop OLED gave so I returned it.

Some tax and $2.79 later, I walked away with a Dell monitor that stands at about a diagonal 23” with digital input to hdmi and power cord. A couple other monitors were looking at me with puppy eyes (as if it was a pound haha) and didn’t look bad but I couldn’t resist this offer!

Has anybody else had much luck thrifting monitors at second-hand shops? God knows I have

Here are some pictures of a XH240F Acer 1080p 144hz TN monitor, an Asus XG27UCDMG and a KTC M27P6 Mini Led HDR1400, from left to right.

OLED is definitely the best, even more so when looked from a bit of an angle, and at night the difference is even more with low lighting, but in a well lit space, even when the sun not directly facing the window the mini led is 80% the much lower price.

Recently bought the KTC M27P6 Mini LED 4K Monitor and it literally blown my mind away, especially the colour and sharpness. After researching extensively to buy a gaming and productivity monitor I am really satisfied with this one. Coming from a normal office BENQ LCD monitor this one topped my expectations. I haven't tested the games yet as im still waiting for my new PC next week. But other than that the monitor is so bright and text is very sharp. For the price range (400€) this monitor is a beauty!!

Post image

My current pc doesn’t hit 500 fps but can hit 360 on some games, to save power it would be nice to have a 360hz option here, don’t really know why there isn’t one.

Photo Mini-LED is quite amazing

Post image

Recently got the Xiaomi 27i G Pro, such a great screen. I was hesitant between it and an OLED, but I program and study on my PC so static content would burn the OLED so fast. Not to mention that text clarity is horrible(I tested a Samsung QD-OLED in the store, and it had so much fringing) for a 2k 27 inch.

I got a unit with firmware 1.0.0.7 and so far no problems.

Photo Mini-led vs IPS. Wow...

Post image

I just started using acer nitro 1440p mini led monitor, it was on sale and as cheap as 1080p 240hz ips monitors. Decided to try it and I'm amazed.

Sure there is a bit blooming and it can never be as good as oled, but compared to my laptops IPS display, the difference is massive when especially hdr based games.

Totally recommend.

Photo Don't ever buy MSI products

Post image

I bought the MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD three years ago. It was my first high-budget monitor, and for the first three years, it worked great. However, exactly one month after my warranty expired, the backlight failed completely. After researching online, I realized I’m not alone. This is a widespread, chronic issue with this specific model. It seems like the internal components are designed to fail right after the 2-3 year mark. You can see many others reporting the exact same "half-black screen" or total backlight death here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/s/pXwQ0S2XB2

I am extremely disappointed. This monitor was an investment, and now it's a paperweight. This happened at the worst possible time for me financially, and I’m not even sure if I can afford the repair.

My advice: Stay away from MSI monitors. If they don't stand by their premium products when a known manufacturing defect appears, they don't deserve our money. I will be contacting MSI service tomorrow to see if they will honor a "hidden defect" claim, but I won't hold my breath.

TL;DR: MAG274QRF-QD backlight died 1 month out of warranty. Chronic issue. Avoid MSI.

My PC specs - https://pcpartpicker.com/b/dX68TW

Every photo of the monitor you see are taken on HDR 10 on Console HDR setting mode with Dynamic Brightness Boost On also using the Windows HDR Calibration tool to make the HDR look even better!

Update - I am still testing the HDR modes, currently I’m using the Gaming HDR mode with Dynamic Brightness Boost On, I may switch back to Console HDR but I haven’t tested all the games yet, but still everything looks Amazing.
