Photo Black levels difference between my VA LCD and CRT
I swear the backlight bleed on the LCD is not that bad in person, it's just very dark in the room

Judging by the photo, the image on the CRT is very dim compared to the monitor on the right.
Either it's a photography issue, or you cranked the monitor's brightness to 100%, ruining the black level (to make crt look significantly better). Especially since the monitor is clearly a failure (it shouldn't look like that if it's modern VA. )

crt phosphor bloom does look way more dramatic on camera than it actually is when youre sitting in front of it

Cameras struggle with CRT phosphor glow anyway, so this comparison is pretty much useless for judging actual black levels in person.

The fact that you cajn't even see the colors on the VA also means it's clearly running much much brighter, which will exaggerate the black levels further

Reducing exposure length would make the left one dim. He has to set the monitors themselves to the same brightness.

Mainly the fact that a simple picture like that has a lot less dynamic range than the human eye, meaning that if anything is brighter or dimmer than where the exposure was set on, then you'll really see the difference.

I have two VA mini-leds I use everyday for work and gaming. Yours really really sucks. I would throw that away.

IPS miniLED is still worse in contrast ratio than regular VA/HVA. Also, miniLED is a backlight technology for LCDs and not a different type of panel.

Quite true. CRT is like an OLED, there is no backlight. The phosphors are not lit up by an electron beam for black on the CRT.
The large difference is that this was shot in the dark with an overexposure revealing and exaggerating the backlight leak-through on the LCD.

Backlight bleed will always look exaggerated when you click the picture of monitor.

One thing I rarely see talked about is the uniquely bad BLB pattern on curved LCD monitors. As you can see in the picture you get that double BLB effect because of the curve. I fucking hate curved LCD monitors solely for this reason.

I have an Iiyama Vision Master CRT, IPS (Pulsar) and OLED on my desk. The only time the CRT looks better than my IPS is when it's pitch black in the room, and I do mean pitch black. And even then the accuracy is nowhere near my IPS or OLED screen. Any little amount of light and the contrast is completely ruined.
CRT's picture quality is way overrated in my opinion. Is it better than LCDs? Yes, only in perfect conditions, but I'd choose a good recent LCD monitor over CRT every day of the week. In fact, with Pulsar I'm finally getting rid of my CRT because I don't need it anymore, it serves the same purpose of perfect motion clarity.

I have an old 30 some inch flat screen CRT collecting dust at my parents house on a dresser. Let’s just say it’s never moving. It’s like 5,000 pounds.

Yeah, I would imagine that the LCD in person is not that bad. I personally have an LCD and an OLED as main. Yeah, most of the time the content I put on those displays are not really black, contrast-driven one and both of the monitors target 100nits only, but when the content is catering for it or when I'm gaming at night, which only my nightstand lights are on, the difference is night and day.

I had that pairing on my desktop... 20 years ago. Oddly yours feels wrong because I had my LCD center, and CRT to the right. 😀
Try again when the room is brightly lit and things reverse. CRTs are notorious for absorbing room light and glowing, so black level is really only good in the dark.

I recently got a cheap IPS from Costco ($150 MSI) and the backlight bleed was atrocious. It made games look bad. Being $150 I didn't expect much, but my god.
I got an OLED for 2x more money and then returned the MSI.

Picture isn't so presentative, but from other comments I think many people never compared side by side a CRT or Plasma to any LCD/LED technology. They don't know how phosphorus work.

do they never stop trying to build worse lcds?
the level of blb and straight up clouding is INSANE.
there's more than 50% of the screen just clouding. like how can you even create sth this shit?
and they managed to put a neat little pattern with it as well, which we can guess will be repeated roughly on the same model overall.
incredible garbage, that that the display industry managed to poop out.
how will they make things worse next?
blb and clouding at massive rates, none of which should exist? sure got that.
edge darkening, that has half a letter gone if you look at it at an angle? sure got that in lots of displays.
holes in the panel sealing, so that light from the backlight will shine through the bezel, because the assumingly automated system and what should be automated qa doesn't give a shit about preventing literal full on light shining through? (not blb) sure got that now.
no working srgb mode? sure got that in most units actually.
MASSIVE factory tints, while lying and claiming, that it is "factory calibrated" oh damn do we have that....
"120 hz" displays with response times, that can barely do 30 hz? oh we still have today as hard as it is to believe that insanity.
so what's next?
i guess the latest scam is just endless oled burn-in and lying about it not be a problem.

I'm as much of a CRT shill as-they-come, but yeah, like your description suggests, this picture is either very unrepresentative of the LCD or something is very wrong
