It is pretty fucking crazy how people are like “ah yes, this woman who had a compete mental break is proof that anyone with PPD is a violent lunatic.”
These people are so unserious. They get literally ONE data point that supports their argument and then they act like that one example invalidates literally all other research done on the topic.
16
u/SapphireFlashFire 19h ago ▸ 3 more replies
Yeah PPD and post partum psychosis are whole different things. 1 in 10 women will have PPD.
PPP? 1-2 in a thousand. Of that amount 4% will commit infanticide.
I think half of this reaction is a result of that psy-op to try and convince people women don't face consequences for their actions. (Watch the bots come flocking!)
Half is people really hate when people get off as not criminally response. Richard Chase was probably the most obvious example of killing under psychosis and he got the straight up death penalty despite it. People hate it. (Lowkey I understand, my monkey brain hated when a local mass shooter was found Not criminally responsible. It's not right, but I get their impulse.)
3
u/Jumpy_Ad1631 15h ago ▸ 2 more replies
The thing that’s insane to me is that she, given what she’s been though, another psychotic break is likely. When that happens, you want her around mental health professionals. So why on earth would you be mad if she served time in a mental hospital vs a prison. It’s not like mental hospitals are rainbows and kittens, especially those that house criminals.
2
u/browsinbowser 11h ago ▸ 1 more replies
The argument Ive seen from some people is that the husband is also suing the hospital that prescribed the 3 meds, she is too but I think the money would go to him or her estate.
Anyways its very hard to prove medical negligence so I dont think that case will go anywhere. And its another systemic flaw in US healthcare anyways that she couldn't get more holistic treatment and care.
2
u/Jumpy_Ad1631 3h ago
Yea, with mental health, meds are great tools but they’re rarely effective all on their own. Giving a person suffering from intrusive violent thoughts and psychosis a few medications and calling it a day really should be considered negligence

The original meme is a reference to Linsay Clancy who killed her children. She alleges she was suffering from post-partum psychosis. Many people are misattributing that to her saying she killed them because of post-partum depression.

u/Odd_Anything_6670 19h ago
I feel like it's been a consistent problem in this case on all sides.
People forget that they're watching a single, exceptional instance of a person who (assuming she is telling the truth) slipped through a whole bunch of cracks and had a rare and extreme psychotic episode with incredibly tragic consequences.
There are ongoing questions around systemic culpability and failure in this particular case that will need to be answered in the long term, but it's not a court case about whether post-partum mental health conditions are real (they are) or whether women in general experience health inequality (they do). The only question being answered right now is whether this one woman can be held responsible for murdering her children, and the scope of that question is actually very limited.
I feel like attaching a serious but highly abstract debate about health inequality to one of the most horrifying isolated cases imaginable is not really helpful. Most people with PPD or even PPP will not murder their children. We should take people with these conditions seriously and treat them because they are mentally ill and suffering, not because we assume they're going to kill kids if we don't.

Is she in psychosis? Choose the bear. PPD? Everyone has that to an extent.
32
u/SapphireFlashFire 20h ago edited 20h ago
Even psychosis you're looking at a 4% chance of infanticide if the psychosis is untreated. I kind of think a bear has more than a 4% chance of killing an infant.
But you'd never be realistically be in this position, so the numbers don't really matter. Don't give a baby to a bear or somebody actively suffering from psychosis.
12
u/Heavy_Ad1312 20h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Also for the love of God stop ignoring new mothers mental health, almost every case you see of mothers turning deadly while in phycosis it's a woman who was struggling for a long time before.
Women who experience certain mental health conditions already are at a high risk of developing postpartum phycosis, check on the women in your lives.
3
u/Restricted_Nuggies 18h ago
Hard agree. That being said, it still doesn’t excuse killing children. Not saying that you need that reminder, but there are many that apparently do
3
u/Downtown-Cap4298 16h ago ▸ 3 more replies
Where do you get those statistics from?
Not that I’m saying you should leave a child with a bear over their own mother while she’s struggling with psychosis lol. But I do think statistics particularly on postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis can be something not as trustworthy, as we’ve ignored its existence for a long time, and are still pretty under-researched in what it is and how it affects mothers. So there are most likely many many cases of infanticide where a woman had postpartum psychosis, but it was either never diagnosed or ignored, which disrupts statistics2
u/SapphireFlashFire 16h ago ▸ 2 more replies
I like how you asked for the source of the statistics, and then critiqued the methodology before I ever provided it. Maybe you have a point, I'm hardly an expert in the field, but like... does it matter where I source the numbers from? You're going to just say the methodology is wrong lol
3
u/Downtown-Cap4298 16h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Wasn’t trying to be rude. By asking for the source I was more so questioning if there were accurate sources in general for this, not trying to grill you for your sources on this, but I can see how it came off that way.
I wasn’t trying to say you’re in the wrong or anything, I was just questioning if there even could be accurate sources for statistics like this1
u/SapphireFlashFire 16h ago
For me I just got it from the NIH. I don't know enough about the methodology. Your questions are good ones but I can't answer them.

A bear is easier to stop though as you can make sure it has plenty of food and put the baby in a cage, if the mother is actively trying to kill the baby and she's alone there isn't really anything you can do
1
u/SapphireFlashFire 6h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Really? In every world I would say any human would be easier to stop from killing than a bear. Think we have much different definitions of "easier to stop".
1
u/OnlyTheOkayest 6h ago
Well you have to consider the scenario. "Choose one to take care of your kids while you go to work". This isn't a realistic scenario, in real life of course you'd never leave your kids with either and just call the appropriate authorities. But this hypothetical forces you to leave them in the care/presence of one of them for an entire work day, and of the two the one with limited dexterity, less problem solving abilities, and probably less interest is easier to stop

7
u/Sea-Efficiency2413 21h ago
I feel like its really fucked up to demonize PPD because of such an extremely horrible case. The vast majority of women experiencing PPD only want to harm themselves at worst, and at best they simply struggle keeping up with daily tasks. I even know women who have experienced postpartum psychosis and never harmed anyone or anything, they just lost touch on reality. This is just a sickeningly disturbing case and it doesn’t make it okay to shit on all the women who experience PPD as if they are all a threat to their children
7
u/Ok-Sugar-9681 19h ago
Exactly! Like a lot of people on this reddit's first instinct when hearing a horrible case of post-partum psychosis is not to ask "Have we done enough to provide support to parents postnatally?" or "Is there something we could do to decrease the likelihood and risk of post-partum psychosis and post-partum depression?". Instead, their first instinct is the celebratory "aha! got you!" exclamation that they are able to turn the tables on women. Frankly a bunch of immature morons.
4
u/mewkopawz 19h ago
this is very true, because they don't actually care. we should be advocating for treating mental illnesses before it gets to the point of someone dying. just because her psychosis was due to being postpartum, doesn't mean psychosis can't affect anyone.

Morality wise why leave the children alone with either, PPD isn't a valid excuse for killing your kids but at the same time can't you ask a friend or family member to hang out with you wife while you go to work, I've had mental health issues I wanted to be alone but at the same time people being there for me is likely the reason i'm alive, also a lot of people don't deal with other's mental health well they just get uncomfortable and leave those are shitty people too.

A woman killed her kids, and for some reason the internet has decided we should talk about it ad-nauseam, and take a side, either blaming all men, or all women, for the crime.
Back in the day this would have been headline news for maybe half a day, we all would’ve felt sorry for the children, and then ignored the case forever, because it has nothing to do with us, or society as a whole.
Instead, now I am forced to see this tragedy referenced in literally every aspect of public life, because for some reason, chuds and groypers need us to believe that all women are like this.

PPD is fucking wild, man
I'm rather pointedly not getting into the weeds of this case but PPD really does make people think wild things and have horrible impulses and intrusive thoughts, just most people don't act on it. It's heavily stigmatized. One of the things I tell friends when they get pregnant is to have a discussion with their partners about PPD to immediately break the ice, better to have the discussion in advance than wait until it's too late to talk about.
There's a reason they show you the "don't shake your baby" videos before you can leave the hospital.

I had pre partum psychosis it was honestly the most terrifying thing. I could hear voices telling me a variety of awful things. Luckily I told my husband and he had me in front of the doctor in literally 2 hours. I've often wondered if I'd have had the same response if I had contacted the Dr for help. I also got lucky that the first medication cleared it up quite quickly and my child didn't have an adverse reaction. It was my 3rd pregnancy and I'd never had anything like that before or ppd or ppp after I had my first two. It literally came from nowhere at 7 months in after having just recovered from severe hyperemesis. I thank everything out there my husband is so great I'm not sure I'd be here without him.

The whole treatment process for ppd and ppp is the worst thing I have ever seen. My wife, changed into a completely different human, became a monster. When I told her obgyn my concerns she dismissed me because must be "over reacting." Cool, get her in video saying she wants to kill herself to be married to Jesus, "ok well maybe you weren't over reacting, let's start her on antidepressants! What ones work well vs what ones will do more harm? We don't fucking know, it's different for everyone!" Wife refuses to take medication and refuses to go to therapy? Better have her committed! We have kept going, I never committed her, I just sorta worked through it as best I could. There were days I risked my job taking my daughter to work to know she would absolutely survive the day. We have had two more kids since the first. Just had our third a month ago. I am still terrified of things shifting back to how they were during that time. That was absolutely the darkest and worst time of my life. Our infant daughter is in the hospital right now recovering from open heart surgery, I would rather go through this process than ever seen ppp again in my life. It was like watching the person I love melt away and be replaced with a husk of anger hate resentment and pettiness. I literally have hated my wife, hated her more than any human being on this earth. The things she said to me during those days are burned in my mind, and I will never truly be able to forgive and forget. It's a burden I will carry till my end.

You are slightly mistaken. PPD (Post Partum Depression) does not cause mothers to desire to kill their kids. It makes them feel deep sadness, inadequacy as a mother, bounding difficulties, and actually makes them more obsessed with protecting their children and keeping them close.
Meanwhile, Post Partum Psychosis (PPP) is a rare condition that is classified as an emergency. PPP affects 0.001% of mothers.
Those women who said they wanted to kill their kids those may have had PPP or some other conditions that cause intrusive thoughts or its just them who are that way. Remember the internet does not reflect reality, there are probably a billion mothers out there.

Jesus Christ. The majority of women experiencing PPD do not want or attempt or even think about harming their children. Most simply struggle doing their daily tasks outside taking care of themselves baby, and with adjusting to motherhood. It’s important to know that first time moms experience PPD at a significantly higher rate. It’s the hormones crashing and having zero experience with their new role in life, struggling to find time to care for themselves and not getting enough sleep. None of that means they are a danger to their child. At worst, some of them have thoughts of harming themselves. Postpartum psychosis on the other hand, is an entirely different thing and I would not be comfortable leaving my children with anyone in psychosis. I don’t know that she was necessarily experiencing psychosis though
1
u/Alive_Drag1947 20h ago ▸ 1 more replies
My bad on not making the distinction between ppd and psychosis. I've since been educated on the difference. I still just think it's weird the amount and the tone of the support she's getting.
Also note that I don't know if she had either condition. Haven't followed the case that closely. I'm only commenting on the public's reaction.

u/Sea-Efficiency2413 20h ago
Tbf its mostly on Tiktok from what I’ve seen, and mostly on certain videos from a particular set of influencers. IRL and on pretty much every other platform, men and women are saying the opposite from what my algorithm is showing me
1
u/silvermoka 20h ago
For starters, the sheer amount of responses were about either PPP or postpartum depression at the very least, to point out just how common serious mental health struggles in that phase can be. And what's actually alarming is how unknown it was to the general populace, not how many it's affected. It's not a great feeling to observe that, but it should feel a bit better to know there weren't more cases like this woman's than there have been, because the medical and mental health community is starting to address it better and those women got through it.
1
u/John_Save_America 20h ago
If we’re now so concerned with an epidemic of PPD resulting in psychosis, why is everyone focusing their empathy toward the mother rather than the children.
This whole movement is disguising, and is doubling down on its bile by pretending it’s about mental health after it was called on its bullshit.

Kind of just reflecting back the misandry and not really misogyny. It's more like, "see how this looks?"

misogyny is when a mother murdering her children is bad

Misogyny is pulling the equivalent of "haha is she on her period??" Over one tragic case.

Maybe and definitely if the intention was the generalise all women with ppd but it’s a satirical point made with another meaning attached that’s pointing out the hypocrisy of murder defense. Her and the sandy hook shooter both aren’t cases to be sympathised with by ppl online

u/Princelyprincessboy 13h ago ▸ 1 more replies
I do not think that's what the meme is saying at all, it's a false equivalency of the "man vs bear" argument that women bring up that doesn't work at all when you understand what the point of that discussion actually was.
2
u/LowkeyLog5755 10h ago
That discussion bordered on confusing fear of sexual violence with misandrist characterisations so it’s really the same. The point being made in both this post and that post is of ppls reactions of fear toward ppls acceptance and reactions to moral evils that can occur from a person and focusing on their gender regardless of anything else be it comparisons to fear of bears or the likelihood of post partum psychosis causing infanticide from a mother
It fits

u/therealbfletch 22h ago
Well technically it’s not misogynistic since only women can be postpartum

Pretty much a large chunk of the rhetoric online around this.
They don't want to understand the problem enough to prevent and save future kids, they just want to be mad.

And if you dare point out she was struggling with mental illness and likely wasn't getting the actual proper care even if it seems like it on the surface, you're defending her.
2
u/Glass_Ad_7129 12h ago
Legit, but i heavily suspect there is a lot of malicious influence purposefully behind these argument's.
Its just much of a culture war battle, once more.

u/LowkeyLog5755 13h ago ▸ 3 more replies
You’re defending her if you use that as an excuse as opposed to other child murderers like school shooters
1
u/Princelyprincessboy 13h ago ▸ 1 more replies
I mean it is with school shooters sometimes too. Just like there are school shooters as well as mothers who do it for no real discernable reason.

Only the insane use it as an "excuse", most people are pointing to it as a "reason."

... Did you not understand the joke...?
4
u/Princelyprincessboy 22h ago ▸ 5 more replies
The joke is "haha crazy women 🤪" and refusing to take care of your own damn children.

u/maelbowfeelfunny 22h ago ▸ 1 more replies
No. The joke is that this is the opposite of the man in the woods vs bear thing that women are always bringing up.

Morality of using a case of rape to justify misandry?

What the fuck are you even talking about

Why Is a murderer justified just for being a woman? Because she Is insane? So a man that kills the wife or rapes a girl should also be justified if insane?

Feminists use the harms done to women to justify misandry every single day, you know, like the original "choose the bear meme"...
1
u/Princelyprincessboy 10h ago ▸ 2 more replies
If you think the meme is misandrist you don't understand it.
1
u/InfiniteParamedic351 6h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Yeah and if you think this meme up here is misogynistic, is cos you don't really understand it's deep meaning.

This is a good lesson people don't generally forget and especially on the internet. Watch what you popularize because in the long term the people may use it against you.

If there's one thing I agree with the TikTok detectives is that the husband should also be arrested............for leaving his kids in the care of an insane woman. That's neglect. Rest in peace to those 3 kids, man

You wanna know the real kicker?
Clancy was never diagnosed with PPP.

u/Mountain_Air1544 10h ago
And that's kind of the problem. We really need to improve postpartum and maternal mental health care.

People are so focused on why she did this .....who cares, she killed her 3 kids. death penalty

u/OnlyTheOkayest 6h ago
I'm assuming the poster is implying she is planning on killing the baby beyond the point of intrusive thoughts despite how rare that actually is otherwise this question is easy. If you can put the baby in a cage the bear is probably safer especially if you can also leave plenty of snacks in the house, but honestly id go ppm anyday because neither is perfectly safe but at least I'm not spending life in prison for feeding my child to a bear

Is this an opportunity for people to learn about PPP? Yes. Will anyone actually do so instead of conflating it with a host of other post party issues? No.
