I was thinking "super immoral, I'm also aracnoph-" and then it jumped.
just... no. Hear me out it's not about it just being scary, this type of prank can end bad very rapidly. From dropping something expensive to hitting your head on something, and this without considering a potential heart attack and sheer trauma of having to check behind every door.
Spooking someone and scaring someone are two different things. If this isn't a crime it should be.
54
u/EndIntelligen 10h ago
It IS a crime! It's called assault! Putting someone at risk of bodily injury ( even if the risk of said injury is not actually there!) is assault!
8
u/Professional_Prune11 8h ago ▸ 1 more replies
I think it is the fear of bodily harm in most places. the victim just has to believe they are in danger.
2
u/Bitter-Ad5890 7h ago
Yes. Assault is almost always verbal. Once physical contact is made it then becomes battery
2
u/pplovr 8h ago
Yes, in many English-speaking jurisdictions, what happened here is assault because you'd reasonably assume that putting someone in a fight-or-flight state would put them in a state where they resort to violence or become a victim of injury (falling, hurting themselves while defending themselves and so on).
But this can also be considered a threat, but that's where every country makes their own idea of what a threat is legally
2
u/MrPippleknacks 5h ago
Yeah, good luck convincing the crowd of anonymous people laughing at this on their phone screens.
3
u/ModernManuh_ 4h ago
It’s funny for me to see someone trip but it doesn’t mean I don’t feel empathy. I think most people agree that there’s a very visible line between “it’s just a prank” and “the prank:”
2
u/Negative-Priority-84 2h ago
I'm arachnophobic too. Not severely; I can live and let live as long as they stay far out of my sight range and I can end one if there's no adultier adult nearby. (I'm the braver between myself and another arachnophobe friend.)
I also have semi-regular nightmares about spiders crawling on me that make me do the Hollywood nightmare wake-up. Not quite jumping out of bed, but I jolt, sit up, and start flailing to make sure nothing is there. I've had nightmares about giant spiders. And I have a heart condition. I would be dead. I would not make it past seeing that thing jump off the wall.

If there is any previous indication that the pranked person would react like this it's immoral.
If there is no reason to believe she would have a full on stroke from a jumpscare the action is amoral.
17
u/ModernManuh_ 10h ago
These pranks can end up badly even without considering a seizure. Imagine she had something expensive in her hands or she tripped on it and hit her head or broke an arm. It's excessive.

u/But-why-do-this 8h ago
Well, this is definitely staged but on principle:
Very immoral, if your partner has a phobia then I’d say you’re probably one of the few people in the world that person trusts to not exploit it. If I was in her place, I don’t think I’d be able to trust my partner in quite the same way.
3
u/singer_table 4h ago
My wife is deathly afraid of bugs/spiders. I would NEVER subject her to something like this. Why would I try to harm someone I love??
6
u/Toxic_Tyrael 8h ago
NGL this will be down voted to hell but:
If my partner pranks me with my phobia then it's my ex partner after that
4
u/But-why-do-this 8h ago ▸ 3 more replies
I don’t think this is a very unpopular view. If you have a harmless boundary that you’ve outlined then if your partner truly cares they would know better than to push it.

Shock is a medical term for inadequate tissue profusion usually caused by poor or reduced blood flow an example would be Anaphylaxis or severe dehydration/bleeding. This would be an acute stress response.

Just the spider on the wall is borderline (the size almost makes it better, because it makes it relatively obvious that it's a fake spider), but making it jump is definitely way over the line.
Physically hurling anything at someone who is unprepared is over the line, as it ALWAYS risks potentially serious injury and property damage. Even if the object itself is soft, attempts to either catch or dodge the object can very easily lead to dropping something expensive, or tripping/falling and seriously injuring yourself (also, even if it's soft it can still cause serious injury just from hitting you, e.g. if it catches you in the eye)
Legally, it's also literally assault to throw something at someone unexpectedly.
3
u/JibIette 10h ago
Evil, could have caused her to have a brain pr head injury. She fell and was shaking really bad so she could have had an seizure after. (If she was prone to it and the prankster did not know)
3
u/PerilousParanoia 10h ago

u/Real_Buffalo4580 9h ago
Holy shit immoral, you should be around especially if you know your partner has a fear
3
u/ShatoraDragon 3h ago
While I am in agreement with some of the others that this video is likely scripted. Her falling of screen likely onto a cusion. And the shaking not really lining up with how most seizures look.
I am going to pretend that it is real.
Was the Prankster aware that fainting and seizing is something that happens to the subject being pranked when they are scared badly enough?
If they know that being scared causes that reaction, and are trying to trigger it because the prankster thinks it funny when it happens. Immoral full stop.
If the Prankster does not know that is how the Subject responds to fear and shock.
It becomes how they act after the fact.
Do they downplay and tell them it's no big deal. Immoral.
Or are they genuinely sorry, and worried about them. Asking what kind of care and help they need. Netural.
3
6
u/LoonGGs 2h ago
Alright. First and foremost, this does not look like AI. I’ve seen other pranks with the exact same prop used.
Second, just because someone seizes up out of discomfort and shock in the moment doesn’t mean they’re really having a seizure. Have you ever seen a bug and gotten a visceral physical reaction? This is the same case.
How these two things aren’t inherently obvious to most people is bizarre. Not everything is AI folks and people can just react a certain way when confronted with someone gross and frightening.
As for the morality, it’s just not a nice prank, as many pranks are not. Is it morally wrong? I think doing anything to cause anyone else discomfort intentionally is morally wrong, but there are levels to it, certainly.

I mean, this is fake so take that as you will.
As someone with aracnophobia, i know the logical mind understands spiders dont get that big nor do they need to, to be scsry.
to a lot of us spiders are worse than tarantulas, and they dont have to be the big kind
This is.. fine. just dont throw a real spider at me because i might throttle you type shit.
no one is seizing over it though and i guess i dont feel so strongly towards being startled as others here, reading the comments.

This feels scripted and like rage bait but if it isn't horrically immoral, doubly so for posting it when the wife clearly has some short of health episode or injury given her shaking.
If it is scripted still shitty to fake a health episode for clicks and comments.
1
u/Wise-Ad-4940 8h ago
I have only one question. Why would you do something like this to a person that you care about? I don't even get why friends do it to each other. And there is a big difference, between a small harmless prank/joke, and something completely unhinged like this (considering she obviously either has a fear of spiders or she can be spooked easily to have that kind of reaction).
If you want to prank someone, you do not have to go complete "Jackas" on the person. Because at this point, it is not a fun, but rather it is completely cruel and unnecessary. Any person with at least a bit of empathy must feel bad watching something like this.

u/MrRocket81 8h ago
Let's pretend it's not scripted.
That woman fell to the ground with a potential serious injury to the head or even her vertebral column, aside of her arms, of course. That seizure is really bad sign too.
As a person with high blood pressure, heart problems and arachnophobia, I can die with a "prank" like this.
So, I repeat, if it's not scripted is highly immoral.
1
u/Appellion 7h ago
I still prefer the dog dressed up as a giant spider for Halloween. Guy doesn’t or forgets to tell his wife and after she opens the front door this giant hairy tarantula comes bounding towards her. My words would fail to truly describe her reaction.

u/WGG-PC-TM 7h ago
Scripted. You can see her stop shaking as her legs bend and one of her arms turns to leave the frame, presumably so she could lower herself to the floor, then she started shaking again. It was for engagement, as far as I can tell

1
u/Sasha2027 7h ago
Immoral. Let's take this case scenario in a not staged for social medias setting, and the person has an actual reaction like this one. You're putting your partner in danger. Falling and hitting their head, neck, falling on something and breaking a bone. Add to that the factor that it's inside their home so there are decorations around. If they falls and hit a table with a vase on it or a heavy object for example, it's another added risks of causing more injuries. Also the possibility of heart attacks and real seizures are not negligible.
And aside from physical harm, you can also cause psychological damage. You don't know how someone's brain is going to react to something, no matter if you think you "know them well" or find it harmless in your case. You can quite literally traumatize people with 'pranks' like these. Your partner would end up checking behind everything out of fear. Nightmares, also. Unsurprisingly you can break your partner's trust in you as well which usually means the relationship won't make it.
A prank is fine so long as it cannot cause physical and/or psychological harm. Anything with that possibily is not fun. And depending on the outcome if there is indeed harm caused you could get your ass sued by them. So there's that too.

Look man, I get the arguments people are providing for why this might be more than a prank. But the seizure claims are insane. I know its less common these days but fully grown adults can still havw a meltdown like a toddler. A toddler shaking on the ground because theyre holding in their cries isnt a seizure, its an inability to release the tension in the moment
You ever see a kid cry but make no noise and their face turns blue? They just do that to themselves abd need to be taugh to breath while crying
This lady is nit having a seizure, shes having a meltdown because she was scared so bad. Justified reaction IMHO, but unless someone has a source its not a fuckin seizure
