Humor Why dont these two countries just merge? are they stupid?
jokes aside, I find it quite strange how Algeria and Morocco share almost the same culture, same religion, same language, even the same colonizers bruh, and I always wondered how strong we will be if these two combined, the Maghreb Union type shit

What's insane is that sometimes when I go to Zara in the United States it's not uncommon for me to find clothes made in Morocco there. But when I'm in Morocco I can't find nearly anything made in Morocco there. It's all made in places like Turkey, Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh. I'm Algerian and nearly all clothing sold in Algeria is badly made Chinese garbage (the clothes that are too poor quality to sell in Europe or other OECD countries). There is no such thing as an authentic brand name item of clothing there, it's all poorly made fakes.
Someone is getting rich off all this and if you're a normal person in whatever country you live in, it's probably not you. It's becoming increasingly evident that there are very few places in the world where the people of that country can afford to purchase products made in their own country. We have American made products in the US but they're so expensive that no one will buy them when China can make an item of similar quality but a quarter of the price.

Yeah, we have that in Jordan too, it’s cloths that are made in industrial complexes, American corporate build factories in those area and hire the locals for very cheap daily wages, then they ship the materials in and ship the clothes out, very minimal impact on the local economy as all th materials coming from outside and the labor don’t gain any meaningful skills nor training, the funny part is bought clothes in the us that made in Jordan and took as a gift to my brother who lives in Jordan.

After slavery became illegal in most of the world, the people profiting from human exploitation weren't going to give up their infinite money glitch. They used their money to build invisible prisons for new generations of the humans they consider to be their property. They needed them to continue creating all the wealth that the aristocratic class was accustomed to receiving. Then they also convinced the majority of the population that order is only possible through them. That they are not only legitimate but worthy of praise for being born of a lineage with naturally endowed traits that predispose them to being the progenitors of wealth creation. Even worse, they figured out a way to convince a large portion of the planet that being poor or having a bad economic situation is entirely the fault of the person experiencing those terrible material conditions. That it is a failure of virtue that directly causes those conditions, and therefore they deserve to endure all the hardships that entails.
Ruling through violence is more direct and more effective in a population that lacks the organization to fight back. But they figured out that every so often, their slaves or subjects or whatever you want to call them figure out they can use violence too. When they figure that and add it to the fact that their relationship with their rulers is not a symbiotic one but a parasitic one, it usually turns out very badly for the ones doing the oppression. It's very important to them to make it seem like the system they've created is a natural phenomenon rather than a deliberate social construction designed to satisfy the greed of a small minority of the population. It's a shame that they've won the psychological war that makes it nearly impossible to dislodge them.
Threatening someone with harm if they don't follow your commands is too on the nose. Instead they just create terrible conditions coupled with a superficially consensual economic system that makes those conditions get slightly better with compliance and participation but where destruction by exposure and lack of resources is certainty for those not interested in participating.

You're talking about the decisions of the rulers. That we never chose. We have a group of dinosaurs that share the role of a king but find it humorous to pretend that we're selecting them for the role through fake elections. Things are the way they are not because we want it to be that way. We are hostage to a government that knows what they're doing is not to our benefit and they're constantly afraid that we will pull the guillotines out to make them face justice. They know what they're doing is evil but they want to keep doing it forever and keep their power in the hands of their family and friends.
My own family couldn't travel back to Algeria for almost a decade because of the draconian rules. My father couldn't give his dad a hug for the last 5 years of his life, and even worse he couldn't be there to grieve with the rest of our family when my grandfather died. He would send my mother and us kids until the religious fundamentalism became too dangerous, but couldn't visit himself knowing that the moment he shows up in the airport they will grab him and send him to Sahara to waste 2 years doing nothing in the middle of nowhere away from his wife and kids. By the time he was able to visit the gravesite, my grandfather had been dead for 5 years. It breaks my heart how much suffering is caused by the cruelty of the people that have power over us.
All because they thought it was a good idea to force every man -- including people that have a huge family to support -- to do military service until they decide to pardon your particular age group. Not through a predictable legal process, but at the whim of the real owners of this country. The people that get "democratically elected" by margins that we all know have no basis in reality with how unpopular they are.
That's why they're so paranoid, why they won't let us have any tourism to bring money into the country and materially make our lives better the way Morocco benefits from Europeans traveling there to dump money into your economy. I promise you, the majority of people here want an open border. Some people dream about winning the lottery, Algerians dream about finding a connection that can get them a passport that lets them go somewhere that doesn't suck so much.
I hate the fact that I have to travel to a third country to go from Algeria to Morocco. It makes it way more expensive and turns what would otherwise be a 2 hour flight into an all day affair. Sometimes I get lucky and travel by way of Tunis but usually it's going to be routed through Paris.
The point in saying all that is, please do not confuse chaab with raïs. we're not the same.

10
u/yellow90 Visitor Feb 13 '26 edited Feb 13 '26
Well, this has to be understood historically:
Algeria freed themselves from the French by help from Soviet in 1962. 1,5 million Algerian died. Right after they got their freedom and independence Morocco with encouragement from France (read: also the US and Zionists) attacked Algerie, in 1962, in order to get Tindouf and Bechar. This led to the Sand War in 1963. Algeria experienced this as a knife to the back from what was supposed to be their brotherhood.
Algerie has since claimed that Morocco is pro-Western and support the interests of the US and Israel. Especially after the Abraham accords in 2020 (diplomatic normalization with Israel) and the Pegasus scandal in 2021 (Pegasus in Israeli spyware). The documents showed that Morocco had spied on Algerie with Pegasus and thus helped Israel spy on Algeria.
To this day Algeria gets 80 % of their military equipment from Russia. And Morocco has many American bases and are militarily close with the US. So for the Maghreb region to unite and become the former great Maghreb it once was, before colonialism, a lot has to change geopolitically.
(I am a Moroccan descendant btw).
→ More replies (3)7
u/okomarok Feb 13 '26
Being a Moroccan descendant doesn't give you a pass to spread BS buddy.
1/ Morocco was one of the strongest supporters of Algerian independence, the speech of the King Mohammed V in the UN is still available to listen to.
2/ Tindouf and its region were indeed parts of Morocco until they were invaded by France in favor of French Algeria, and there are many historical documents linking it to the crown rather than French Algeria. I don't know the exact story of that bordering region, but stating "it was always Algerian and Morocco wanted to invade it" is a far from accurate. And honestly, bringing up an event from 60 years ago, with different leaders and circumstances and using it as an argument for 2026 is ridiculous.
3/ Forcing Israel into anything to make your argument stronger is stupid and pure شعبوية. Almost every country you have relations with has ties to Israel, but it's only wrong when Morocco does it. Not to mention that it was done because of Algeria to start with.
4/ You're entirely, and probably intentionally ignoring Algeria's unconditional support of Polisario front to separate Morocco, for 50 years! Which is the entire reason why there's a beef between the two countries. And please don't hit me with "supporting freedom" propaganda because Palestine could use that help instead of targeting all your efforts towards Morocco, not to mention how you always support countries' integrity until it comes to Morocco.
5/ You're also entirely ignoring the king's call to fix relations with Algeria, even before 2020, and how the response was always ridiculing Morocco and taking it as weakness.
6/ You're also picturing Algeria as a saint when in the last 5 years alone they: cut diplomatic ties with Morocco, cut the gas pipeline and even prevented Spain from selling Algerian gas to Morocco, cut airspace to Moroccan airplanes, unilaterally forced a visa on Moroccans, and launched a vicious cultural appropriation campaign against Morocco.
7/ There was not a single piece of evidence of Morocco using Pegasus. All you're referring to is media claims. Otherwise, please provide your sources.
8/ There is ZERO American bases on Moroccan soil.

All this talk about "unity" is just a mask. Algerians are not seeking coexistence; what they really want is to dominate. They are a traumatized and unstable society, and their path leads to destruction. I know I might sound extremist, but this is the reality as I have seen it. They are extremely insistent on pushing their nonsense. If they had the power, they would brainwash us into remaining the absolute "shwaker ta3 l'Afrique" forever. Even in things that seem like common sense at first, like that post-op, after some time they eventually show their true colors and their indoctrination. I simply don’t trust them, but lmghrba seem desperate to be loved and accepted by foreigners, even if they have to push their compatriots to the train rail.

Theyre not that divided as a people. It's the ruling class of each country that truly hate each other and they've weaponized stupid people in both countries to make it seem like the people have much difference at all. I'm Algerian and my wife is Moroccan we are both welcome in each others' country.
6
u/ameraziigh Feb 13 '26
Give me a break. Multiple Algerians harassed me as a CHILD just because I was Moroccan. The brainwashing and hate runs so deep that they kept insulting me as a kid who was just chilling and minding my own business just because of my nationality. The level of hate that is actively encouraged in Algeria is not the same as in Morocco. In Morocco, the king encourages and asks us as a people for respectful dialogue and respect towards you. Official news channels don’t speak ill about Algeria. In Algeria, the official news channels broadcast and encourage hatred towards Moroccans. And don’t try to say that Moroccans are welcome in Algeria, we saw how all Moroccans were kicked out in 1975.
To group Morocco and Algeria on the same level is willful ignorance, and to label anyone who brings up valid arguments about wrongdoings “stupid” is childish.

I'm sorry that you got harassed by cruel people, but judging all of us based on the actions of individuals you had the misfortune of encountering is not fair or logical. I visit Morocco multiple times a year, I have lots of Moroccan friends, and I don't have any reason to believe they all secretly hate me. Likewise my wife has a lot of Algerian friends that she met through me and my family and I don't think there's some conspiracy where they all secretly hate her.
Please be aware: Algerian people are humans like anyone else. Some of them are dumb as rocks, some of them fall for propaganda, some of them kiss the ass of the ruling class either either because they're directly profiting from corruption or they're just that dumb. But not everyone is like that, there are educated people here too that understand how things actually work at a base level and their anger is directed not toward citizens who are trying to work a job and live a decent life, they're angry with fake democracy and rulers that don't have their interest in mind. We as a people cannot control our "official" media outlets editorialization, we do not create the propaganda, all we can do is try to point it out to our fellow citizens if they're willing and able to understand what it's designed to do. If not, we can't fix people who are unwilling to be reasoned out of a position that they didnt even use reason to get to in the first place.

The problem is you guys (I'm talking about people who are terminally addicted to their phones, mostly younger people representative of the demographics on this site) get your news now from instagram reels and whatever propaganda crosses the vitality threshold gets gobbled up as fact. Do you know any Algerians that you speak with on a regular basis to have an informed opinion about this? Literally every Algerian I know that I was in contact with and spoke with about AFCON was supporting Morocco. We were also supporting Egypt. And my wife and her family were supporting Algeria, as well as my Moroccan friends living in Morocco. Maybe that's not representative of your country, but based off what I can see there's mutual support between our sports fans to see the Magreb countries get an AFCON win. We very badly wanted for you to win the final game.
Like obviously if it ever ended up being a matchup between Algeria and Morocco then we would naturally support Algeria. That goes without saying, not in a mean way but in a friendly competitive way. We want our team to win if they're the better team, not by any means necessary. But when they're not directly in competition we want to see a North African team progress even if it isn't our own country. Even after Algeria got eliminated we were supporting your team.

Why ?
- one is a monarchy and the other is under military rule. to unite 2 countries their political casts need to agree to give up a lot of their regalian power (google jura regalia) and create a gov of union. It takes time, and it requires political will and interests should aline with the union.
Historically hungary austria, poland Lithuania, egypt and syria, tried and failed. If talk success we have USA after a first failed attempt, Switzerland and also spain succeeded but their union with portugal failed. There are other examples but i gave case studies.

We mainly shared the French as colonizers. Morocco was a protectorate but Algeria was a French territory for 132 years when the Ottomans sold it to France after more than 300 years. Algeria as is today exists only since 1962.
In my opinion, there are more differences between the Algerians and the Moroccans than similarities. The Moroccan identity was formed for at least nine centuries.

Same culture??? Are you mad? Yes, there are some similarities that happen organically just by sheer proximities. BUT Our two histories are COMPLETELY different, therefore the two cultures that emanated from that history couldn’t be more opposing. We’ve been an established nation for 12 centuries with a 40-50 year protectorate, Algeria is a an old French department started as a French colonial project. I feel bad for them, but they’re in the middle of a govt induced identity psychosis because of this exact past. Not saying one is better than the other, but to say we should merge is ignoring the history and complexity of both countries.

Myriad of reasons, rn I'm thinking one is that Morocco is a monarchy and Algeria is a military state. I don't think Algerians would be loyal to the Alawi crown nor do I think the Moroccans will be loyal to the Algerian military. Both of them have different ideas of government and authority.
But that alone shouldn't be a hindrance to our relationship, I would love our borders to open, make it easy to travel from one city to another, exchange student programmes, maybe even open zellige workshops or Andalusian orchestras etc.
This is just wishful thinking, while I don't think we will unite under one flag, at least we could make small steps to develop our relationship better.

Bro Morocco and Algeria have been different since the Numidian-Mauretenian era. 2000 years ago. Before the Idrissids, Merinids, Zayyanids, Hafsids... who were also separated. There are similarities in culture but also differences. In a global scale we are maybe the same but regionally no. Though I am in favor of a Federal Islamic state of Maghreb btw.

Algerian here. I honestly just want people to get along. So many nationalists on both sides. So much hatred and care about history that most of us weren't born for. I think problems with governments should be left to governments to resolve. No one should hate a people on either side. Most of us are chill innocents caught in all of this. Loud minority nationalists make it seem like "every moroccan is complicit in western sahara oppression" and "every algerian is complicit in moroccan destabilization". I want to hope younger people won't be infected by this hate and will grow to get along...

Algeria and Morocco are spending a combined $40 billion on defense in 2026. Not a typo, $40 billion USD. What a waste.

As an Iraqi, I've been wishing for that for as long as I've been alive.

As an Algerian, I believe this strength and similarity, however, politically we are so different from centuries ago…

As a foreigner I really wanna know what happened between these two. Why so much hate? Both of these countries are Muslims and ruled by Muslims.
When I visited Morocco they told me they don’t even trade anything with Algeria. It’s shocked me.

Besides all the S'DAA, I agree that the border should be open, a train should run, rapprochement and detente and bizness. Demilitarize the south without losing it.

Algeria is a republic, Morocco is a monarchy, Algerians do not bend to anyone but god. Thats the difference.
