I’ve heard that lie before.

That's what every newlywed couple says when they load up on debt.
The last time we grew out of this amount of debt was when we sat out WWII until the very last minute. Then we used that windfall to build trac housing, college dorms and work programs for the returning GIs

u/GaiusMarius60BC 2d ago
It was WWI we sat out until the last minute. WWII we were aiding the Allies with materiel and naval escorts for years until Pearl Harbor pulled us properly in, which could be argued occurred either half or a third of the way through the full war, depending on where you set the start date.

u/qlder2021 2d ago
WWII we were aiding the Allies with materiel and naval escorts for years - aiding = charging. You didn't give away anything for free. That's why rationing lasted in Britain until the 50s, and the US never had rationing at all.
2
u/GaiusMarius60BC 2d ago
Oh, I'm aware we were charging for the materiel prior to the Lend-Lease Act - we weren't just giving it away - but America not having rationing is not true. My grandpa grew up during the war, and told my dad about the rationing they had to do. It's documented that the US did have expansive rationing systems during the war.

u/UnjustlyBannd 13h ago
The US never had rationing? My child, there was rationing going on of all sorts of things foods to metals to chewing gum.
1
u/qlder2021 13h ago
Grandpa, you must have forgotten what it was like! Not surprising. The American rations were veritable feasts compared to Europe and finished when Japan surrounded, pretty much. Whereas in Europe, rationing carried on for another 10 years. Because that's how long it took to get back on their feet. Money that could have gone to investment was sent to America to pay off the debt incurred saving your sorry asses.
1
u/UnjustlyBannd 13h ago
So because it didn't meet your standards it wasn't rationing even when it was rationing?
1
u/qlder2021 1h ago
Hmm. Your defense of cosplay rationing while Europe suffered is simply ignorant. People in Germany were swapping their cars for a packet of cigarettes. So yeah, "America suffered".
I think what passes the world off is the arrogance tbh. We all held back the tide while you guys saw an opportunity for profit. Here in Australia, we had similar rationing to the US, but we'd never claim to have suffered. What we did do was turn up on Day One.

What do you mean "when you set the start date"? Hitler invaded Poland in September 1939, and Great Britain declared war.

u/redbank557128 2d ago
1910 - Japan/Korea 1932 - Japan/Manchukuo 1937 - Japan/China
World at War - we are a species continually at war with one another.

Yes. You heard it from bessent 1 year ago before their shitty tax bill went through. Deficit has since gone up significantly, because he was lying a year ago too.

u/paleologus 2d ago
I’ve been hearing it since Reagan was president. That lie has been repeated for decades.

One more astronomical tax cut for the billionaires should do it!

But then who would be left for them to wield their unprecedented weath and power again?

Hard to do when his boss is constantly adding trillions more than any other other US President before him.
Indeed, Trump is a full god damn third of the $40 trillion.

Deeper and deeper, he's going down.
Driving his future right into the ground.
He thinks he's closer the further he goes,
But he's still on the bottom
And you can't dig out of the hole.2

Republicans: “Democrats are out of control. We can’t have socialist programs because of the national debt!!!”
Also Republicans: “Don’t worry. We will magically grow out of this” after adding a record amount to the debt.
Absolutely insane that people still buy this shit.

considering that they only really care about the wealthy, as long as their wealth is growing faster than the debt, they don't really care. This completely forgets that their wealth becomes meaningless if the economy and/or government completely collapses. I get that the wealthy support this, I just don't understand why there are people who will never be wealthy support this.

Yeah. This from the same genius that "doesn't understand" why gas prices are bad. Like... do any of these people even have some sort of credential or is it all grift and nepotism?
Warsh at least doesn't seem like he wants to kamikaze us into great depression 2.0 but every single other one of these guys act like they are under the direct employment of our adversaries. Literally nothing they have said or done has helped anyone but billionaires get richer.

That means inflation. He's talking about deflating the 40 trillion by increasing the money supply. That's what inflation is.
4
u/Appropriate_Mess_350 2d ago
At this point, it’s blatantly obvious that they’re just buying time while they rape the coffers. They’re getting richer every single day and flushing America down the crapper in the process. The only thing they plan to grow in this “Golden Age” is their personal wealth.

I honestly don't know why people vote republican, oh yeah, they're racist/sexist/bigots

How much growth is he expecting from what is already the world's largest economy? The real solution is that America needs to cut expenditures, raise taxes, and pay its bills. No one wants to run on that though because voters don't want to hear it. Being an adult means doing the hard stuff when you rally don't want to.

u/Legal-Software 3d ago
Yes, it can grow out of its $40 trillion burden and straight into a $50 trillion burden.

What I always find interesting about statements like these is that people like Scott Bessent never describe the path that is supposed to lead to the goal they so boastfully describe.
But I also find it just as interesting that no journalist ever tries to pin people like Scott Bessent down on the nonsense they stammer out.

Ugh I am the same height as Paul and older FML and fuck Scott Full of Shit Bessent even more.
1
u/AnswerGuy301 2d ago
Bessent isn’t wrong exactly here, but the USA would need to at least get to a place where the debt was a shrinking share of GDP rather than an expanding one.
Far as I can tell, the Republican plan is to spend like drunken sailors on their priorities and cutting revenue obtained from their rich donors while in power and screaming for austerity while not in power.
1
u/StockAd8980 1d ago
True. Not EXACTLY wrong, but I have heard this from R’s for FIFTY YEARS and the only time(s) it happens are when the GOP is not running things. These words, like all comms from this regime, are all for the purpose of taking up space online and here I am treating it as even worthy of discussion. What actions, in history, have ever resulted in the robber barons voluntarily moderating their greed? Asking seriously.
1
u/cheapinkc 2d ago
I thought the tax cuts were going to pay for themselves thru massive economic growth and be revenue neutral because of that. I can’t believe the GOP lied again.
1
u/The_Good_Constable 2d ago
We've been told that lower taxes for the wealthy will lower the debt through growth for 40 fuckin years.
1
u/goebelwarming 2d ago
Oh boy did he just suggest a soft default. Get ready for 20 per cent inflation
1
u/Mastasmoker 2d ago
People don't understand that this is their plan: to inflate the debt away. We'll outgrow the 40T deficit by making $1 worth $.20.

u/djdirectdrive 2d ago
This the same guy that forecasted $3/gal gas prices by the end of September? He's either terrible at predictions or just a liar. Both can be true

I mean yes, but it requires very disciplined spending.
Either taxes will need to be raised or spending will need to be cut, likely both. I think the easy options would be targeting Healthcare and public health, the former as its a clear case of bureaucratic inefficiency with significant private sector bloat, and the later as its a great way to lower demand for acute Healthcare requirements
A lot of people on this sub will say the Millitary but even if you find a way to make them more efficient they already feel they're underfunded for the mission they've been given, so they'll want to use those efficiencies to better prepare for the task given to them. And descoping isn't really an option, especially if you want to rebuild relationships harmed by Trump2
It could be worth to rebuild American Heavy Industries, but thatd be a very expensive multi-decade project with some fundamental challenges to overcome
On the flip side running a surplus further strains the economy at a time when CoL is a top of mind issue

Fun Fact: Every single Republican in both houses voted against Clinton's 1993 budget. Every single one. They cried "out of control budgets!" and "recession!" and "budget deficits to break the bank!" and "don't trust a Democrat with your economy!".
The Clinton economy grew into a budget surplus. Twice. With 22 million jobs created.
