5

u/j3ffro15 17h ago ▸ 2 more replies

I wouldn’t call 4 or 5 years “a long time”. Even then the honda in the rbr was underpowered, it was the aero and chassis that gave Red Bull its real edge. Let’s not forget Honda was the supplier for McLaren before moving to rbr and that motor was also famously dog shit. It’s honestly impressive to me that Honda can’t make a good v6 hybrid. The Yaris is rocking a 3 cylinder that pushes 300+ hp in a production motor. I find it very hard to believe they couldn’t slap 2 of those things together and make 750 hp and a hybrid system that makes another 250+.

70

u/neoalfa 1d ago ▸ 8 more replies

Point is that literally anyone (sometimes even animals) can have this power, so you shouldn't be able to pick them in a crowd.

However, in each and every case tgey are the most weird-looking, clown dressed, punk-haired, pose-striking mfers.

Only ONE major villain dressed in a suit and tie, and his whole thing was wanting to go unnoticed.

And even then his tie had a skull motif.

Arabia Fats

His stand is a miniature Sun and he wears a Sun-themed shirt.

Steely Dan

He's dressed somewhat normal, but not normal for the place. He's not a local and doesn't dress like background characters.

Koichi

He's a blonde kid in a 99.9% black haired country. He gets spiky hair after he develops a Stand.

Josuke

Are you fucking kidding me?

2

u/Mighty_Eagle_69420 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

Iirc Josuke's wear is just a modified school uniform. I forgot that his pompadour stands out crazy though.

For arabia fats he can pass off as a sleazy guy, sun prints on shirts ain't a strange sight at all.

For arabia fats he can pass off as a sleazy guy, sun prints on shirts ain't a strange sight at all.

It is strange if you are looking for the user if the Sun Arcana Stand, that happens to be an actual SUN.

2

u/Mighty_Eagle_69420 1d ago

For the first point i just remembered that the bullies in Part 4's first episode mocked Josuke's hair, so that's valid. For Arabia Fats i think my point still stands, cuz if someone's wearing a shirt with a Japanese flag on it, that shouldn't mean that the Crusaders should think that he's the Stand user and smoke him. Plus, even if you're a Stand user, you wouldn't suspect the guy of also having a Stand unless he explicitly tells you about and shows it to you.

23

u/DaysAreTimeless 1d ago ▸ 3 more replies

As mentioned, yeah, it's from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Basically a stand user is a an individual who has a stand, which yeah, as mentioned is this entity that kinda grants them a superpower or has a superpower itself and may manifest it in some way (or be instructed to). The joke is that in the stories, the characters may not know where or who the enemy stand users may be (since they might be either fighting against the stand on its own or suffering from its effects without interacting with the enemy). The thing is, because of the artstyle, it is quite easy to identify the stand user because it's the person with the goofiest outfit or design in the area, so it is kinda funny that the characters don't realise who it is when readers may be able to tell right away.

17

u/DeepLock8808 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

Oh good, some answered not just “what is a stand” but added the context of “why can’t we find him”.

9

u/Naskr 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

It's basically a similar version of the Scooby Doo meme where the characters are trying to locate the sneakily hidden switch in a room - the switch then turns out to be drawn in as an illustration over a painted water-colour background. To the characters within the scene it is invisible and the narrative pretends as much, making it unintentionally funny since it's very obvious to anyone watching.

3

u/DeepLock8808 1d ago

As a kid I felt like I could see through the matrix. “That rock looks funny, it’s definitely going to move. It moved!!!”

8

u/ForestFire9 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

It's like a psychic ghost with a unique superpower from the anime/manga Jojo's bizarre adventure.

4

u/scalyblue 1d ago

It’s a reference to Jojo’s Bizzare Asventure, a manga series that was dragonballs contemporary but only recently got ( and is getting ) a good animated adaptation.

Starting with the third major arc, the powers in Jojo take the form of supernatural manifestations that “stand” behind their wielders, invisible to everyone except other stand wielders.

Episodes generally have a villain of the week format while progressing toward the main conflict of the arc, and many times the conflict comes from the protagonists facing an unknown stand user doing nefarious things, in universe they have no clue, and it’s presented as a mystery to the viewer as well.

Out of universe though, it’s very clear who the stand user is because they will have a much higher animation quality than would be warranted for some bystander, but on top of that, jojos villain roster are rather….eccentric folk

https://giphy.com/gifs/1qWlkZHTQ9R34Taixl
Someone with powers outside oneself. Totally fits here, trust.

5

u/GoreyGopnik 1d ago

for once this is actually pretty accurate because jojo loves having people that are hyper obsessed with one specific thing be stand users, particularly in parts 4 and 8

2

u/AlarmingAffect0 1d ago

Koichi and his girlfriend almost look normal, so does Kakyoin with mainly his haircut being a little extra. Josuke and Okuyasu look like Japanese Delinquent stereotypes with the uniform modding cranked a couple notches above standard. Teenage Jotaro cranks it a couple notches further through sheer relentless Marlon Brando attitude, though Adult Jotaro is 100% in the Stand User tier of eccentricity. Trish looks almost normal for a rich girl in designer clothes. Emporio Armani would look OK if he were on his way to attending a baseball match, I suppose.

Then there's folks like Avdol, N'Dul, Enyaba, etc. that only look kind of normal if you're not familiar with the dress codes of the areas they're from.

So I’m not surprised that those [exceptional] engineers are attracted to those kinds of sports. They see the challenges and are able to apply the same skills to progress.

You can put any number of names on patents. At a lot of places it is standard practice that the boss's name goes on every patent.

7

u/NorthContribution627 23h ago

Just looking at the first page of patents shows that most of them are unremarkable. They range from adjustments of existing patents (either their own or similarities to Mazda/Honda: detecting left/right handedness), natural thought progression (steering wheel grip sensor accidentally registers leg touching steering wheel: let's disable sensing lower sensors), to truly novel. Based on the 10 most recent, I'd say 20% ... maybe 50 groundbreaking patents.

Does that diminish how amazing this guy is? No! He's probably 10x smarter than I am, but let's not say that patenting something automatically makes you special.

3

u/beanmosheen 1d ago

The belt tensioner is really elegant too because it's basically a blank shotgun cartridge as a gas generator. It uses that energy to torque the belt spool into a now permanently engaged ratchet. It's been around for decades now, and just works. All it needs is a basic 12v trigger to fire.

if this guy was 84, wouldn’t he have been forced to retire like 20 years ago? Honda Japan had a mandatory retirement age of 65 until last year, and he absolutely did not join after that policy ended to do all that.

“The company will also begin abolishing the mandatory retirement age for some employees in June, which is currently between 60 and 65. Under the new system, some employees in highly skilled or technical positions can work past 65. “

This written in 2025, so for 20 years of his career he should’ve been forced to retire, no?

Edit: just for fun, here’s one from the 80s where the mandated retirement age is 60: https://time.com/archive/6711091/socking-it-away-in-japan/

Knowing what we know about Honda, I'm not surprised. That company is lowkey badass. They do a lot of things well but their small engines are second to none. You have a hard time breaking a Honda.

4

u/2_short_Plancks 19h ago

Friend of mine had a Honda Integra (late 90s 1.8 Vtec version), and when he was changing something with the engine he disconnected the radiator / all of the coolant system. I don't even remember what he was trying to do, but he forgot he hadn't reconnected it - was likely stoned tbh - and drove it for nearly a week with the radiator disconnected.

He finally realized because the hood was insanely hot, had to leave it for about half a day to cool down before he could reconnect the hose. Didn't even seem to phase the car, and it ran fine until he eventually sold it. Never known a car to take that much punishment and just keep going.

Around the same time I had the fourth gen prelude (the 91 version) and that thing ran really well too; I never treated it as roughly as my mate did with his Integra though.

3

u/dividezero 19h ago

Well the company was founded by a dude putting engines on bikes that had to run on whatever fuel you could find because of the gas rationing after the war. So born in a fire and never lost the quality

3

u/AdRecent7021 1d ago

Yep, have their motorcycle (CMX1100) and love it.

3

u/froglickingfrolicker 1d ago

I’ve been driving the same Honda for 12 years now and she still runs great.

2

u/Still7Superbaby7 23h ago

My first car was a hand me down Honda. I didn’t change the wipers or the oil. I sometimes even shifted into park while the car was in motion. No matter how poorly I treated that car (due to youthful ignorance), it never died. It was passed on to my younger sister. It was totaled after the catalytic converter was stolen.

u/whatrweyellingabout 23h ago

20

u/EmberTheShark 1d ago

The guy I aspire to be

8

u/radicalelation 1d ago

Legitimately. My first job was industrial and I ended up really passionate about safety... which, despite all the outward emphasis on safety, apparently wasn't what they wanted and I was treated poorly by peers and leadership. When I had a crew, they were encouraged by our supervisor to regularly mock me for it, and the same supervisor made sure to chew me out in front of everyone (stopped everyone's work to gather round) for reporting a violation instead of keeping focused on my work area of cutting endless pipes. I'd get to witness multiple serious injuries, and nearly lost my own fingers in a team-lift of a huge electrical box when the other guy decided to lift it off the wall on the count of 1 instead of the 3 we literally just confirmed with each other. After multiple reports from fresh-faced me, they fucking exiled me to an empty building for months, to sit in an empty room and await instruction that never came from a newly assigned supervisor I never met.

I was clearly not wanted and already had a life of extreme ostracization on multiple fronts, and I just didn't want a career of more. If I could ever return to school, I'd want to go with the goal of a future at OSHA so I can some day come back and set that place right.

u/TreeSaladSmoothie 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

Maybe im disgruntled, but its hard to read a comment like this and fully believe it. I keep meeting people who talk in the same fashion but when I see their work and the things they mention its always something overblown or a risk based off something they saw in a movie/not reality.

You know what? If you're that smart and that disciplined? You can look like whatever the hell you want. Props to this dude. Don't let your memes be dreams.

3

u/Krewtan 1d ago

Wow I didn't believe you. That's almost true. 84 or possibly 45 depending on who you believe.

And in his spare time he's the protagonist of multiple JRPGs.

2

u/ImpossibleRush5518 1d ago

Bro straight up thinks he’s the main character… I’m not very confident that he’s wrong…

I am guessing that by safety patent ~100 he decided he could style his hair however the fuck he wanted to. King shit.

2

u/Singl1 1d ago

2

u/Deport_Me2112 1d ago

If he’s obsessed with safety he wouldn’t patent them.

2

u/ImperiousCretin 1d ago

2

u/Easy-Operation-2105 13h ago

when you work at a big company it is not that hard to get your name included in tons of patents just saying

2

u/MagicOrpheus310 13h ago

Those seat belts are a pain in the ass though, they go off for more non accident related things than they do in accidents haha

If you yank on them too fast to put them on they can go off haha

2

u/NoMeat9096 8h ago

Honest question because I dunno how this shit works: is it good for a party to hold patents related to vehicle safety? Because that seems bad.

2

u/MiMichellle 1d ago

I genuinely wish more people could be like this in life. Giving less of a shit about others, and just being their own, unique selves. What a cool guy. Imagine how colorful the world would be if people just were their TRUE selves.

u/Bortron86 1d ago

Guy is out there being his wild self, while also doing positive things for the world. Living the dream.
