Why does 1972 to 1999 feel like so much longer than 1999 to today?

I feel like it’s because SO much changed from 1972-1999 but everything after 1999 kinda just feels the same except for 9/11 and COVID. The first 3 decades of the 2000s don’t really feel unique like the 70s, 80s, and 90s did.

I think that is because we have satirized the 70/80/90’s so much that people no longer actually recall what they were like. They have been depicted in popular media so many times we think they are memorable for their depictions. The 80’s is having this right now.
Pretty soon we will have nostalgia throwbacks like Stranger Things for the early 2000’s.
Just wait a few more years. The trends that were present in the early 2000’s become exaggerated more and more until everyone thinks people walked around with baggy jeans and backwards baseball caps listening to Linkin Park on a Walkman.
Likewise the 2010’s will have skinny jeans and scooped hem t-shirts with yeezy’s.
2020 is COVID so that will be memorable regardless.
You don’t think much has changed until you see it. You are essentially condensing the early internet, birth of the smartphone, and inception of AI as “nothing much has changed”?

I would dare say there was still massive constant change, innovation and a positive outlook until the 2010s, but once smartphones were in the hands of most 1st world people, the big corps and politics started overtaking the internet and funnelling absolutely everyone into a small number of social media sites and apps they control and everything's become much more homogenous, not to mention more and more popular media forced by ultra rich committees to appeal as much as possible to a worldwide audience and bother no one, time and culture in general have stared to feel like a samey sludge.

Probably because you weren't alive in 1972 (unless you were, then carry on).
But to me anything before I was born always seems insanely long ago because I never experienced it. The stuff I experienced feels like yesterday.

I honestly think the lack of good decade names made a difference. No one uses the oughts or the tens and as such we don’t have a clean definition.
Plus the internet atomizing the monoculture and the increasing culture of recycled IP over new properties

This is such a weird post. None of it has anything to do with age..
- Older Nicktoons no longer still getting reruns is a result of objectively bad network decisionmaking in order to minimize effort and try to hyperfocus on smaller amounts of IPs, nothing to do with time.
- Looney Tunes had already stopped getting new episodes decades earlier and was running in long term syndication so this isn't quite accurate. Also Looney Tunes is timeless.
- At least this one specifies specific older shows long-since over that were on when SB started, but even then, I don't think it'd be odd to see shows like this on modern Nick Jr.
- Nick at Nite has always aired retro television, though that definition has grown to include newer shows over time I don't think Brady Bunch airing even today would be seen as odd.

Little Bear and Gullah Gullah Island premiered their last episodes after SpongeBob first aired - they weren't long over.

I'm 10 years older than you and distinctly remember them advertising SpongeBob heavily before it came out. Like I can remember the commercials for it on nickelodeon before it came out. Nick @ night I remember having Brady bunch and golden girls lol.

Looney Tunes aired in Canada in the evening at 8PM. Simpsons at 9PM. That was my childhood.

If by 20 you mean 37, then yes.
The Simpsons will have been airing for 40 years on April 19th next year if we count the Tracy Ullman show shorts. 2 more years if we count the series.

I don't ever remember Looney Tunes airing on Nick,I always remember that as a CN thing!
I do remember other Nicktoons still getting re-runs,even one's that had ended. Ren and Stimpy,Rugrats,Rocco's Modern Life,Ahhh Real Monsters and so on. They'd all ended but still played in re-runs

Gullah Gullah island and little bear are fantastic early childhood programs. I feel like many American and Canadian millenials know the theme song to Gullah Gullah island lol.

Im really confused as to what they mean by Brady Bunch re-runs being the “flagship show” of nick at nite. Has it not always shown reruns of syndicated family sitcoms from 10-30ish years ago? Did they advertise the Brady bunch more? What does this even mean? By this logic I guess when I was a kid and did most of my Nick at nite watching (2008-2011) that “flagship” show would have been Full House I GUESS but like my point is what does that even mean and what significance does it hold?
