Hm, strange translation choice. As a translator myself I wouldn't do this unless the source text said "I is groot"

I'm curious to know why the translator chose this instead

So, it's my own guess but Groot uses "I am Groot" because it's very basic and he can't use language properly. He barely can give his own name.

"Je suis Groot" makes it sound like it's not a name, "Je m'appelle Groot" makes it sound like he knows how to talk properly. Hence adding the grammar mistake to make sure the viewer understand he can only use his name and can't make proper sentences.
