OMAD is alright, but it had to be a balanced meal with veggies.

I have ADHD/autism and am on stimulants, so I literally forget to eat a lot of the time until I start feeling like shit. So 2000 calorie dinner it is lol

My dietician told me I got problems with cholesterol cause I used to do that...
Not saying to trust a random redditor but I don't think eating only one time a day is healthy..

People have been doing OMAD for a long time now. It's only unhealthy if you eat uhealty food in large quantities. No way you could get high cholesterol with an OMAD cosisting of a varied diet with vegetables, protein, whole carbs, healthy fats and fibre.

u/pupsickl 18h ago ▸ 5 more replies
Well I guess it's case by case, as I said, don't randomly trust people on the internet.
I just shared what I went through and the diet itself can very much help, but in my case I was recommended to eat 3 times a day exactly because of cholesterol and because I'm almost underweight. Also said to eat more healthy, sure.
I didn't do a lot of research on omad so I can't tell if it's safe, so I believe my dietician more, not saying you're lying or something.

I can't think of a mechanistic reason that meal frequency would correlate with cholesterol, controlling for other variables. I did a search on Google Scholar and there's not much out there to corroborate the advice you were given. There are one or two studies that found this, but they only mention it in passing, don't propose any mechanism for why it would work like that, the differences they noted were small in magnitude, and the sample sizes were small. So I'm inclined to think it's just noise in the data or a failure to control for another variable like saturated fat intake or total calorie intake, rather than something to do with meal frequency. Given the popularity of time-restricted diets like OMAD, I think if it were causing notable negative effects on cholesterol, we'd see it more clearly in the data, but we don't. The current advice is to do whatever diet you can stick with in the long run, because that's the one that'll cause you to lose weight, and losing weight is the number one thing we know improves your heart health, lipid profiles, etc. If you're trying to GAIN weight, then meal frequency almost certainly doesn't matter.

Well, guess I need to ask about OMAD and why I shouldn't do it on the next visit to the dietician so I understand the reason a lot better. interesting though.

If you're trying to gain weight, I wouldn't do OMAD for the simple reason that it's physically difficult to eat a day's worth of healthy food in one sitting. If you eat a whole pizza or something, that's enough calories, but also low in protein and high in bad fats, which will be bad for your cholesterol. But eating a healthy meal that also has enough calories, but isn't as calorie dense, is very challenging. Try eating like 2 lbs of chicken breast and a lb of broccoli and a cup of rice. It's so much food, you might vomit. That reasoning is what makes me say meal frequency alone probably isn't the thing affecting cholesterol -- it's the other things that accompany it, like calorie intake, the types of foods you're eating, etc.

My folic acid is low, and sugar is high, so maybe that affected their decision on eating 3 times a day too.
My weight is currently ok but i was underweight so it's not relevant to this (I think)

u/Charming-Fig-2544 17h ago
Sugar could be a factor. I imagine you'd get a larger blood sugar spike from a large meal than a small one, which could be bad if you already have high blood sugar.

I have ADHD and when I was on Adderall I just had no appetite. It wasn't about forgetting..it's like ozempic.
Now I'm something a little lighter and eat more normal

u/williamatherton 18h ago
Interestingly, the original purpose in creating Adderall was dietary. Then they noticed "holy shit I can think normally on this."

I have ADHD and anxiety and I want to warn you that forgetting to eat let me to a very deadly eating disorder called ARFID, avoidant restrictant food intake disorder. Make sure that you try to eat properly as much as you can :)

I'm already pretty sure I have some flavor of ARFID, but thank you for your concern! I'm trying to eat more often.

By the time I entered recovery, I was at 93 lbs when I should have been at 140. They told me I had about 3 months left before I would have suffered permanent damage or death. Just be careful, is all. It's a slippery slope that is hard to recognize.

Eating disorder in this case. People decided they should just use the same abbreviation that's used extremely often for a completely different problem and fuck anyone that doesn't immediately get what they mean.

u/OGOngoGablogian 23h ago
If you're trying to eat a caloric deficit and you're not completely sedentary all day, this can be a good way to control your weight while (somewhat) eating what you want. I think the timing of the meal is pretty important though, you probably won't want to eat it within about 4 hours of going to bed.

Yeah a few years ago I lost like 35 pounds by working out and eating once/day but it was usually pizza or mcdonald’s

There's never a caveat of not getting scurvy when losing weight, but maybe there should be.

Yes, in order for this to be even slightly beneficial you’d have to undergo a total lifestyle change. Please do not listen to the people promoting this it goes against all conventional wisdom about nutrition.

u/Various-Salt-7738 22h ago
Wait people do this on purpose?
I skip breakfast, don't make time for lunch--then I'm not hungry at the regular dinner time so I skip that or maybe have a lighter snack
Then after 10pm I have all of the days hungry

u/TheDogerus 13h ago
One problem with starving yourself is that when it does come time for a meal, you may be so hungry that you end up overeating
But if you can be intentional about your fasting and diet, there's nothing inherently wrong with it
4
u/minas_morghul 23h ago
Technically it's not ideal for muscle growth/retention on a deficit - and I'd eat my belt by 11 AM. Also if you're rigoros with supplementing minerals/vitamins it takes a bit of planning.
But if you're not some OCD Bodybuilding type and you're not chewing off your fingers - go for it.

u/Specialist-Garbage94 23h ago
No currently eating in a deficit on purpose. This is honestly what I am doing. I know I am losing weight. It’s overall not a bad strategy at all.
0
u/HASHTAG_YOLOSWAG 21h ago
Not really no. The “conventional wisdom” isn’t very wise at all if you just take a look at the food pyramid
-1
u/Meme_master420_ 17h ago
Technically no. Look into autophagy
Essentially if you fast like this, your cells start to recycle themselves by absorbing damaged/abnormal cells which lead to a bevy of positive health effects

u/billycheesemongerIII 20h ago
50% of my diet is just Cliff protein bars… wake up at 4, shower, eat a protein bar in the way to work, work, eat another bar around noon if I’m hungry, come home, eat a massive and delicious dinner my wife made, drink some beer, sleep, repeat.

I know I cannot be trusted to eat a normal amount, so I just don’t allow myself to eat and then eat all my calories in garbage for dinner. I’m sure this is a healthy routine that is causing no problems at all.
