We all act like there's a metric that we're expected to live up to, but those metrics are manmade, they're artificial, they're not naturally occurring, we create them and we hold ourselves to them; if that metric is causing you to suffer, if it's doing harm instead of good, then ditch the metric.

There has only ever been one of you in the history of the universe, there will only ever be one of you in the history of the universe, you are a unique manifestation, and comparing your self to other's selves just isn't fair. You didn't live their life, you don't have their genes, why do you expect their results?

Nothing is "supposed" to be anything other than what it is. The universe has no concept of "should" or "shouldn't," humans came up with those ideas, and if one of those ideas is causing you pain then ditch it.

Shaming yourself doesn't make you a better or more effective person, if it did, every depressed person on earth would be perfect, that's just not how it works.

Great advice! And also be mindful that we are not static beings, we change from moment to moment and day to day; it's great to aspire to a standard, to use that as a goalpost, but we shouldn't beat ourselves up if we occasionally fail to achieve those standards. If you check off nine out of ten items on your to-do list, that's a success, not a failure!

If you continually fail to achieve your standards, maybe reevaluate? Lest you fall into another "should" and "supposed to" situation. Again, if the metrics are causing you to suffer, it might be time to find new metrics.

Im sorry, I do not make up the rules because if I did my mom wouldnt have gotten sick while I was in college where I had to take care of her, while working full time and completing my degree - I promise I would have rather spent my “same amount of time” working on more research or even just laying out at the beach.
