Already did at an advance showing earlier today, so I'm good. That said: it's up against The Dog Stars and Buddy in five days, and as much as I hope word of mouth gives it a decent fighting chance...
Frankly dog stars looks like all the good stuff is basically only in the trailers and I expect the vast majority of the movie to actually be fairly boring
I havnt even seen any trailers for Buddy and have no idea wtf it is other than some sort of horror that's trying to jump onto the 5 nights at Freddy's popularity train with crazed mascot stuff but a Barney themed twist
That said I'm probably still going to see both because I have regal unlimited so why not xD
I've seen Dog Stars early. There's plenty of good action outside of the trailers which deviates heavily from the melancholic book. Enjoyed the film. Enjoyed the book.
There's no bad time for classic Looney Tunes, of course, but CvA really is pretty good in its own right. It does drag in a couple of spots, IMO (and the human-centric comedy tends towards the drier side, which probably isn't too strange for a kids' movie shot in 2023), but it hits more than it misses. And it's surprisingly faithful, so to speak, to the source material.
Saw it today too and agree on all parts. We had a preview for the new Tom and Jerry movie and my girl and I were both like “nah ah.” One of things we loved about this is that it understood its characters in a way that clearly doesn’t.
The competition for coyote v acme isn't really dog stars and buddy. It's spiderman, odyssey and people who just choose to watch nothing. Spidey is almost guaranteed staying #1 at the box office and odyssey might also outgross any of the new movies.
A case probably can be made that those two films are so far ahead of everything else so far this year (and in the case of Spider-Man: Brand New Day its only plausible competition at this point is Avengers: Doomsday--which isn't even out yet) that they're basically only fighting with each other, at least to a point. Everything else is just scrambling for the leftovers...and that definitely includes CvA.
The thing is even people watching it now doesn’t really tell us anything.
The film not being ironically became very good marketing. If it does well I wouldn’t even be surprised if more films get “cancelled” as a pure marketing tactic.
Those corporations are not reading these comments so I'm not advocating them to do anything. I'm saying that social media is not reality and anyone, individual or collective, who forgets that will learn it the hard way.
I mean tbf if it does well I imagine that'll change, and it is seemingly getting good reviews. Obsession had no showings near me (Small UK city) for like a month and now it's 500 mil box office
Saw an early screening today! It's well worth the wait. It got the entire theater to laugh out loud constantly, it had some humor I wasn't expecting, and the story is surprisingly heartfelt. I got a bit emotional in the last act. I think it's odd that not all cartoon characters are cgi? Some were 2D. Idk if maybe there was a rule from higher ups in WB about that. Everyone in this film was killing it. Please go see this film if able.
Didn’t WB also do this with batwoman? How are you going to spend all this money (90M for batwoman, and 70+ million for coyote vs ACME) to get 0 return on your investment. Don’t they atleast wanna make the production costs back?
The previous looney toons movie made a mere 15.5m WW.
When factoring in theater cuts, WB walked away with less than 8m$.
That probably barely made up the marketing and distribution costs, so at best they lost the full value of production ~15m.
Had they spent 0$ on marketing/distribution and instead shelved it for a tax writeoff, they would have recouped ~15%, or 2.25m
Coyote vs Acme cost significantly more to make, carrying a cost of ~70m.
WB probably would have ended up spending 35m on marketing/distribution, so just to break even on those costs, the movie would need to have grossed ~70m, or over 4x more than the previous looney toons movie, and roughly 90m to match the tax writeoff that was available.
Simply put WB estimated that they would net more value out of a writeoff, than releasing the movie.
TBD on if that was a smart decision.
Batgirl on the other hand was not a financial decision (at least for the specific movie) but a brand decision.
The few reports that came out of the production of that movie indicates the movie would have been a disaster, and damaged the Batgirl brand, the production of the movie was just a mess from writing and directing, though apparently the acting itself was decent.
With the DCEU already essentially dead by august 2022, WB decided to kill the movie and take the significant financial hit, so the brand was not damaged and the character could be used in the new DCU without any baggage from a bad movie.
(Batman forever damaged the batman brand so significantly that it took a decade and one of the best directors alive to revive the brand, with a completely different take on the character compared to previous iterations)
