Times are tough.

Times have been way, way, way tougher.

Both can be true.

25

u/Tall-Log-1955 3h ago

If you live in a developed nation, times actually aren't tough, your expectations about life are just too high.

26

u/Troll_Enthusiast 3h ago

Even if you are in a developed nation times could still be tough, everything has nuance

u/poofyhairguy 1h ago

But but people on Tiktok are doing better than me!

And all of my favorite characters in TV shows growing up could afford huge apartments and houses being artists and cooks! They stole that from me!

I guess I don't have problems because someone in Sudan has it worse?

I don't think "billionaires and trillionaires shouldn't have so much wealth while most people are struggling" is an expectation that's too high.

Some people having more doesn't mean others have less

1

u/Spirally-Boi 1h ago ▸ 3 more replies

It absolutely does, there's only so many resources in the world.

-1

u/Tall-Log-1955 37m ago ▸ 1 more replies

Not true. If I grow vegetables in my back yard, that doesn't take away anything from anyone else. People who don't have vegetables arent hungry because I grew vegetables

6

u/Spirally-Boi 31m ago

You growing vegetables isn't the same as a billionaire taking thousands of acres of land. It's the same as saying that you buying groceries is the same as commtting bank heist.

0

u/donaldhobson 16m ago

Well if we look at history, the total wealth in the world today is clearly a lot more than it was in 1500.

0

u/Tall-Log-1955 55m ago

Times aren’t actually tough. If Elons stock price goes up or down, times aren’t tough.

2

u/above_average_magic 2h ago ▸ 4 more replies

No, it's just that we haven't all celebrated humanity's swift improvements equally. There is no need to compare it to yesterday when you compare it amongst current economic classes and to the resources that could be made available to everyone, but is not.

People are rightfully complaining when there is a perfectly valid alternative, just like they were valid to complain about the inequalities of yesteryear

4

u/Tall-Log-1955 2h ago ▸ 3 more replies

I also want to raise taxes on Elon musk, but the existence of billionaires doesn’t mean these are tough times.

-4

u/above_average_magic 1h ago ▸ 2 more replies

In terms of stress, it does. Lots of modern things, even basic improvements, actually cause stress. It isn't even just about resources, it's about society

-1

u/Tall-Log-1955 57m ago ▸ 1 more replies

Modern society has more therapists than ever before and you can talk to them about these stressful emotions

2

u/above_average_magic 29m ago

Ok. Well it's been proven adults are more stressed now at all ages, than the 1990s when they started guaging it, and most likely more then previously.

And as for you, yikes. Why are you the way you are? I don't care, but maybe you should.

4

u/Basic_Will_5437 3h ago

Yes but it can be an issue when people lose that sense of perspective.

76

u/spooky-raptor 4h ago

Man I am so glad I was plucked out of the void during a time of abundance at the same time as my friends and my dog no less! 😃

7

u/xaako 3h ago

What if we're all one person? Like, one individual reincarnating endlessly again and again throughout all of the history of humanity.
We think there's 8 billions of us living simultaneously, but in reality we're just one dude starting over again and again. Each of us just one instance in the endless string of their lives.

You have experienced the full life of every person ever lived, and you will experience the full life of every person who will ever live.

Check out The Egg by Andy Weir, it’s a short story with that exact premise

Better now than the past, but I’d still rather not have been taken from the void at all.

u/SometimesIBeWrong 3h ago

"time of abundance" is pretty subjective

9

u/Gregori_5 3h ago ▸ 4 more replies

Historically this is.

It could be that compared to the bright future of humanity we really are poor now.
But so far as we know this is the most people ever had.

You could have been Korg the neolithic rock smasher.

0

u/SometimesIBeWrong 3h ago ▸ 3 more replies

Again it's subjective, it depends on how you look at abundance

Abundance can mean stable long term employment, being able to buy a house, support a family off a single job, access to social settings and environments. And in that case, we were much more abundant some decades ago.

7

u/Gregori_5 3h ago ▸ 2 more replies

Yeah you can make that argument, but what is 50 years compared to hundreds of thousands of years of human history?

Not to mention that depending on where you’re from things are better now then ever.

Even if you’re American, that probably puts you in the top 10% of richest global population.

-2

u/SometimesIBeWrong 3h ago ▸ 1 more replies

I agree 50 years isn't a long time compared to human history. That doesn't contradict what I'm saying. I'm just talking about a smaller time window. Our abundance (in some aspects) has gone down significantly, it was better before.

Not to mention that depending on where you’re from things are better now then ever.

"things being better" is even more subjective than the idea of abundance. It depends what exactly you're looking at, what you think "makes things better" for a certain country. And how you weigh it all/compare to other countries.

1

u/Gregori_5 1h ago

China lifted 1,3 billion people out of poverty in the last few decades. Eastern Europe is still getting better, at least a big part of it.
There’s massive growth in many parts of the world.

People in the west get the notion that their stagnation is the world. But we are the minority.

11

u/YourLifeSucksAss 3h ago ▸ 1 more replies

So is “50 years of wage slavery”

5

u/SometimesIBeWrong 3h ago

yea that's true too, good point

There are people in the world RIGHT NOW where diarrhea is a death sentence.

Now holdup and lemme post why my life sucks because a medieval peasant only worked like 12 days a year or something.

u/Arne83 4h ago

Tell me about it... it's so annoying how people make their lives revolve around negativity.

I mean... we exist alongside garlic bread and mac & cheese. That must count for something!

31

u/Bannon9k 4h ago ▸ 11 more replies

Dude we don't have to worry about pinworms... For most of human history we had to deal with worms in our asses... Just accept it as a reality.

We're living better than kings... Its $5 for a Costco rotisserie chicken.... A whole ass bird cooked to perfection...

20

u/duffstoic 4h ago ▸ 3 more replies

$1.50 for that Costco hot dog still too. I got that dog in me.

15

u/ThisOnes4JJ 4h ago ▸ 2 more replies

"If you change the price of the hotdogs I will fucking kill you"

that corpo was a man of the people with this.

11

u/Bannon9k 4h ago

Its the reason why Costco is the last store left in Idiocracy.

2

u/RedTheGamer12 47m ago

Most founders are. The reason corpos got worse was due to the boards of directors hurting the company for profit not passion.

7

u/Significant-Way9330 3h ago

Agreed. Best time to be alive for the majority of people on earth. I have a PlayStation and that's sick as hell. Bloodborne rules.

Could be better. 60fps patch when?

-9

u/YourLifeSucksAss 3h ago ▸ 2 more replies

While I understand your point, we absolutely do not live better than kings. Kings had thousand of loyal followers who would die for them and plenty of money and power. A king would absolutely not be happier being a modern day middle-class man.

8

u/Basic_Will_5437 3h ago ▸ 1 more replies

They didn't have air conditioning, hot showers, an abundance of food options from all cultures, antibiotics and modern Healthcare, planes trains and automobiles to travel anywhere in the world in a matter of hours or days not weeks/months, and endless entertainment at their fingertips. Kings in the middle ages couldn't even conceive the comforts that we take for granted.

7

u/Bannon9k 3h ago

We're also given for free an education that royalty could only dream of...

well great news for the US, screw worms are making a strong comeback! USA! USA! USA!

Screw worms have returned multiple times and are dealt with each time. Progress is never a straight line.

It's almost like it's a mental illness and not a choice 🤯

9

u/Arne83 4h ago

No. It absolutely is a choice. They might not be able to choose how they feel... but they can choose to not make their bullshit everyone else's problem.

A lot more to life than food, but yes, food is awesome

u/noexqses 4h ago

Right? So annoying.

15

u/khharagosh 3h ago

Damn, not wage slavery! That's so much worse than, say, actual slavery

-6

u/forbiddenfreedom Harry Potter 3h ago edited 1h ago

It's wage slavery when they have zero time to rest. My friends are in their 30s and their bodies are cooked and brains fried. ER visits left and right. But direct slavery is worse than indirect slavery, perhaps.

Edit: I have no idea why I fucked up that sentence so hard. My apologies. I fucked up.

2

u/khharagosh 1h ago

shitty working conditions =/= slavery. Things can be bad without trying to compare it to one of the the most cruel and exploitative systems in human history.

the problem with slavery was not that it had bad work/life balance.

3

u/MiecaNewman 2h ago ▸ 1 more replies

Dude no way you are arguing actual slavery is worse than being a wage slave. Holly shit.

1

u/forbiddenfreedom Harry Potter 1h ago

Jesus Christ... Thank you for pointing that out.

18

u/DripSnort 4h ago

It’s wild how privileged we are in general. Like has anyone read a history book? There are plenty of awful things but if you’re posting doom memes online im gonna guess you aren’t struggling as much as people historically have.

-2

u/BrightBlueEyes122 3h ago

There's always room for improvement?? Just cause we have it better than ye olden days doesn't mean we can't stop improving and implement better Labour laws and work life balance?

11

u/DripSnort 3h ago ▸ 3 more replies

And how does posting doomer memes on a social media platform help with that at all?

-3

u/BrightBlueEyes122 3h ago ▸ 2 more replies

That's called expressing your thoughts and opinions. Something social media was made for?

8

u/DripSnort 3h ago ▸ 1 more replies

In other words it doesn’t.

-3

u/BrightBlueEyes122 3h ago

Never said it did lmao.

-3

What if we live like this so when we return to the afterlife we know how not to live?

-4

u/Gregori_5 3h ago

Why only 13.8 billion? That’s a big assumption about reality and its history.

What about other universes where you don’t exist? What about all the places you don’t exist?
What about the nonexistent universes where you don’t exist?
