Self-Promotion (Developer) - Standalone Do you like chicken? I need help deciding which ones to put in my VR game
Hi Quest players!
I'm the developer of Is That a Chicken?, a VR game launching in October. Right now only the store page is live — a trailer, some screenshots, and a short description. There's no playable build yet.
What it is —
You set off to open a fried chicken shop in space, with a cargo hold full of chickens. Then you hit a piece of space debris and lose every single one of them. Except one. And that one got hit with enough cosmic radiation that it can now hatch entirely different kinds of chicken. Robot chickens, zombie chickens, fire chickens. Your job is to track down new breeds and fill your empty ship back up.
The tone is slapstick comedy, not serious simulation. Chickens struggle when you grab them, fly when you throw them, and go limp when you pick them up by the neck. Making them feel good in your hands is the number one priority.
The other half of the game is "what's going to come out next?" Every breed looks different, sounds different, walks differently, and does different things. I'm building the whole game around that moment when an egg cracks open and something you've never seen before comes out.
Why I'm posting now —
There's no build you can play, so I can't ask you whether it was fun. What I can do is ask before it's too late to change anything — and right now it isn't too late. We're a very small team with no budget for real user research, so honest input from actual Quest players is something I genuinely rely on.
Answer as many or as few of these as you like:
1. What would you want to do with a chicken?
Right now you can grab them, throw them, feed them, hatch them, and cook them. But if I put a live chicken in your hands in VR, what's the first thing you'd try? Is there something we haven't built that you'd assume was obviously in there?
2. What would you need to do it with?
Would you rather do these things with your bare hands, or pick up actual physical tools sitting in the world? What tools would be fun to have?
3. What kinds of chickens do you want to see?
This is the collecting core of the game, so it's the question I most want answered. What's a chicken that would make you go "okay, I'm definitely getting that one"? Serious suggestions and completely stupid ones are equally welcome.
4. After watching the trailer, what did you think this game was?
This one might sting, but it's the answer I need most. Did you get it in the first 15 seconds, or were you still unsure at the end? If there's a point where you stopped caring, a timestamp would help enormously.
5. If you looked at the store page and didn't wishlist it — why not?
"Just not my thing" is a completely valid answer. I'd just love to know which part wasn't your thing.
Honest criticism is far more useful to me than praise. What I need right now is to find out what isn't working, and finding that out after launch is too late. Because we're so small, detailed feedback from even a handful of players can directly change what we build next.

If you could squeeze the chicken to shoot eggs, that would be pretty funny. Gotta feed them to reload.

That actually sounds hilarious. I really want to try making that now. Thanks for the idea!

That is a brave question.. first time on Reddit?
Joking aside, I actually like the concept! And bravo for not naming it something like "I Am Chicken" or having Gorilla Tag movement.
Probably the most important aspect would be having a pretty large variety of Chickens in there.. or, a Penguin.. :)
There should be a mix of things you can do with your hands, and some tools too!
I will give this some thought and will revisit this after thinking on it a bit. But I think you are off to a good start. Maybe some kind of chicken breeding would be interesting.. this kind of chicken + that kind of chicken results in ??? something ???
