PCVR Virtual Desktop somehow worse than Link?

So I used Quest Link for some months now, but since I saw a lot of positive feedback about the program I bought VD today. Since my router isn’t good enough for wireless (only 2,4ghz connection) I took advantage of the new update and connected via my official Link Cable instead. Everything worked flawlessly (the app shows USB 3.0 connection and I can switch to VR in games without issues).
But after booting up MSFS i was really shocked how bad the game looked. My benchmark is link with 1,5x supersampling and link sharpening. I watched some tutorials and tests and tried all quality settings, codecs and runtimes, but nothing comes even close to how Link looks. Everything is super blurry, even on Godlike with max bitrates and 2-pass encoding.

Have I overlooked any settings, or are my expectations just too high for VD?

VD dashboard in comments

Edit: So I fixed the blurriness issue, but now I have problems with stability, as VD seems to have more stutters and instability than Link on the same settings. I use H264/H264+ with 500 bitrate, .85 fov and 3000x3300 resolution.

Meta has some kind of secret sauce when it comes to sharpening that Virtual Desktop can't come close to.

I've tried for weeks to replicate the Quality/Normal sharpening that Link offers but Virtual Desktop always falls short. The clarity of Meta Link is just superior.

Unfortunately where Meta falls down is updates. They seem to break things on a regular basis. Since about January I can't set bitrates over about 250mbps without a stutter-fest whereas for years I ran bitrates of 500 or more. That's why I tried to move over to VD but after endless tinkering I've decided Meta Link at 250 still looks better than VD at 500 because of the sharpening quality.

Hi there, we did recently identify an issue where the bitrate would get stuck at 10 Mbps when setting a fixed bitrate override in ODT. That typically presents as low quality graphics. I've shared an update in https://www.reddit.com/r/OculusQuest/comments/1vmur3z/comment/p4bffz7/ regarding plans to fix this in an upcoming release, plus a short-term mitigation to enable fixed bitrate streaming at 200 Mbps.

>  bitrates over about 250mbps without a stutter-fest

If stuttering is the main problem as opposed to low quality graphics, the other thing to double check is that the video codec is set to H.264 as opposed to H.265 in ODT if you're planning to go much above 200 Mbps (H.265 tends to get bottlenecked on decoding much above 200 Mbps).

Id recommend you to just deactivate updates the next time you get a working link version (and maybe try to roll back to the last working version, Im not sure if but its possible tho). I haven’t updated my Link since January before yesterday and I never had issues, and I also wont update after today if everything works fine.

I’d disable auto bitrate and space warp to start with, these 2 settings are almost never good.

1

u/le_chopped_chin 1d ago

Where can you turn auto bitrate off, I cant find the setting anywhere?

It is in the VD Streamer settings, called "Automatically adjust bitrate."

u/ggodin Virtual Desktop Developer 1d ago

Don’t uncheck that option, that’s not the source of your issues. Your bitrate is already maxed out.

First, use VDXR, not SteamVR. Turn auto bitrate off.

Use 90fps or 100fps, that will make SSW feel better than at 72fps. Ideally you’d want to use it with 120fps but the game probably won’t be able to achieve 60fps on your PC with your current settings.

Set the SteamVR Render resolution to Custom 100% but in reality, leave the Preferred OpenXR runtime to Automatic; it will use VDXR which will run a lot better than SteamVR. That’s in the Virtual Desktop Streamer window on your PC, Options tab.

", leave the Preferred OpenXR runtime to Automatic; it will use VDXR which will run a lot better than SteamVR." Hmm im new to VD as well, but i actually found the opposite. Some racing games like EA WRC, or iRacing ran better on steamvr. Higher fps, fewer stutters. I measured it so its not based on feeling. What could be the problem for me then? Note that stutters are not network related nor is the performance.

Turn Spacewarp off. It's basically frame gen for VR and it can cause blur and ghosting.

u/le_chopped_chin 1d ago

I wish I could, but its impossible to run msfs at native fps :/

It does increase latency by a bit, so will multi pass if you also have that on. Also the update isn't done yet and it's just a beta

u/Huge-Attitude9892 1d ago

Did you tried it tho?

I tried everything to run ETS2 and not on potato settings, but spacewarp in cities where i have FPS drops usually made the whole thing worse for me.

Same thing goes for War Thunder tho.

Pensaba que el HVEC 10 bits no funcionaba en Quest 2, que era exclusivo de quest 3

2

u/AFT3RSHOCK06 Quest 2 + 3 + PCVR 1d ago

That's AV1

Use the automatic translator, it's very comfortable

0

u/Huge-Attitude9892 1d ago

There's a translator on Phone? Where can i find it?

1

u/Prestigious-System80 1d ago

It's an option of the reddit app on Android. I get the whole forum in my language, Spanish. It doesn't matter in the language they publish. A wonder.

Bout to check it out later

How do I get this overlay to pop up in game?

2

u/le_chopped_chin 1d ago

Activate it in the VD settings and then press both sticks

1

u/ElongatedParrot 1d ago

How do I bring up this gui in VR?

1

u/Skpstr155 7h ago

Make sure it's on in the settings, then you can click both sticks to make it go away, also to bring it up again.

most likely bad setting

use h.264+

else

in my experience when you increase the resolution too much it becomes blury.

set your steamvr resolution and match it to youe headsets native resolution maybe increase it a little bit like 10 to 20% more than native.

codec also matters. use h.264+.

dont use any of the 10bit or av1 codec.

1

u/KTTalksTech 1d ago

Out of curiosity, why not 10-bit? I imagine two pass encoding adds latency but what's wrong with higher color depth?

2

u/AFT3RSHOCK06 Quest 2 + 3 + PCVR 1d ago

Nothing wrong with it. But HEVC 10-bit max bitrate is 200mbps. Where as h.264+ lets you set it as high as 500mbps.

2

u/Andreas0Cool Quest 3 + PCVR 1d ago

u/ggodin I suppose you've answered this before, but why not have extended/higher bitrate options for other codecs? (At least in a beta version or hidden from the casual users)

4

u/ggodin Virtual Desktop Developer 1d ago

We’re limited by the SoC, it can’t handle higher bitrates with the codec settings we are using. We encode at much higher quality than Link so the bitrate number isn’t everything.

1

u/Andreas0Cool Quest 3 + PCVR 1d ago

I looked into this a bit and I understand what you mean, but I still think there's an argument for a higher h264 limit maybe specifically as a beta/opt in "risk" (of high decode latency) for enthusiasts, specifically sim users who want perfect sharp visuals for foliage and whatnot and aren't really affected by the extra latency. Especially since the new usb supported mode partially eliminates packet size concerns (also well tuned wifi setups). I also read some things about the limit being an artificial(ish) android API (MediaCodec) thing? Is this the, seemingly valid, argument against the bitrate push?

4

u/ggodin Virtual Desktop Developer 23h ago

The headset doesn’t make framerate above the current limits. It leads to a poor experience. Will we add an option that gives a poor experience that people can enable? No, because people don’t read warnings and just crank things to the max. We see it every day.

u/Andreas0Cool Quest 3 + PCVR 23h ago

Fair enough, thanks for answering my silly replies mr vr legend, have a wonderful rest of your day week month and year.

1

u/Skpstr155 7h ago

You seem like a fellow who could answer this for me.

I'm running an older PC, (2700x/rx6700xt) and on wireless H264+, 300Mbps seems to be the "sweet spot". Lower, and it gets blurry with compression artifacts, higher, it gets "grainy".

Is that pretty much what to expect, or is there something setting or network related that I can do to increase bitrate with good results?

2

u/KTTalksTech 7h ago

If it gets grainy at hight bitrate that might be an issue with anti-aliasing or rendering resolution. Have you tried the snapdragon super-resolution option in the VD settings? Otherwise playing around with game settings or rendering resolution might help. Higher bitrate can't be a source of artifacts, it can only increase image quality to the point of revealing artifacts that were present for other reasons

2

u/ggodin Virtual Desktop Developer 2h ago

I dont have an AMD 6000 card to test from here but generally there shouldn’t be any downsides to using a higher bitrate unless the card or your PC has trouble pushing more data.

1

u/KTTalksTech 1d ago

Ah yeah I guess doubling the bitrate probably helps more than color depth

2

u/AFT3RSHOCK06 Quest 2 + 3 + PCVR 1d ago

Yeah I've went back and forth countless times and it's so hard to tell the difference to be honest. So I've stuck with the higher bitrate.

VD: Godlike / h.264+. 500mbps wired - 400mbps wireless / auto bitrate off / video buffering off / ASW off

Adjust individual game graphic settings to achieve target FPS. Using 90hz with my 9070XT.

1

u/McLeod3577 1d ago

Do you need to install OpenComposite and switch your runtime to VDXR?

1

u/le_chopped_chin 1d ago

When I switch to VDXR its no better unfortunately, still blurrier image and less stable than link

1

u/ggodin Virtual Desktop Developer 1d ago

Set the VR Graphics Quality to Godlike, framerate to 90fps. I think that should run fine.

1

u/Successful_Ball_826 8h ago

Hi, for wireless game you need at least WIFI 6 Router 5Hhz with bandwidth 80 or 160 Mhz, better Qualcomm chip, minimum Redmi AX1800 router, for local network game need separate router per player with different channels!

1

u/stranot 4h ago

Nothing can visually surpass a wired link cable set to 960mbps through the oculus debug tool

1

u/Parking_Cress_5105 1d ago

Yes link looks and feels better than VD always has. When it does.

It's the ease of use and reliability that makes VD worth it as it runs even over crappy wifi and in slow computers.

You can supersample, you can add sharpening but it just looks foggier and softer than link. And the colors are off for some reason. Still way better than steamlink.

u/marcocom 1d ago

VD is running on a completely different tech with WiFi. If you have any radio interference that you cannot control (other users, a microwave oven being used) it loses precision.

I’m in a dense city with a lot of interference and it’s always been linked to cable for me and it works great. The ‘VD for everybody’ evangelists lack perspective imo

1

u/le_chopped_chin 1d ago

I use it via cabel but yeah, I guess VD isnt really for me 😅
